The Christmas story tells Black Christians that God’s rescue starts at the bottom of the social order and works upward. In Luke, a young woman with no standing sings that God has scattered the proud and lifted the lowly, in language Israel used for the Exodus. Angels bring the news to shepherds. In Matthew, the newborn king becomes a hunted child carried into Egypt. Dr. Esau McCaulley reads these scenes as a charter of hope. They do not promise that grief ends soon. They show that God has already taken the side of the people the powerful overlook.
A reader who has buried someone the world did not mourn has every right to ask whether that hope is in the text or laid over it. McCaulley names the problem himself. Black Christians long for justice in society and for a different kind of world. Can that hope be found in Scripture, or must it be borrowed from elsewhere and used as a filter for reading the Bible? He puts the question bluntly: when it comes to African American hopes for justice and reconciliation, “is the Bible basically our friend or our enemy?”
That sets a fair test. If the birth narratives offer only comfort, the justice language has been imported. If the stories themselves speak of God overturning the order of the powerful, then a Black reader who hears hope there is reading with the grain of the text. The best place to run the test is a song.
What Does Mary’s Song Actually Say?
The song sits in Luke 1:46–55, sung when Mary visits her relative Elizabeth. It opens as worship: “My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour” (Luke 1:46–47). The next line gives the reason: “For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden” (Luke 1:48).
That small detail carries the whole song. Mary praises God for choosing someone like her. McCaulley stresses who she was: “She had no social, cultural, political power.” In God’s choice of a powerless young woman, Mary sees the character of the God she serves. The choice, in McCaulley’s words, “shows us that God turns his heart towards those who are often marginalized in society.”
Then the song widens from one woman to the world:
“He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away” (Luke 1:51–53).
McCaulley thinks these lines are so central that, as he puts it, “if Mary’s song celebrating the birth of Jesus was the only thing that we had in the entirety of the New Testament, it would be enough to articulate kind of the basic thrust of the African American hope for justice.”
The Arm of the Lord
The phrase “strength with his arm” is easy to read past, yet it is a loaded image. In Exodus, God tells enslaved Israel, “I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments” (Exodus 6:6). Isaiah takes up the same picture for a coming rescue:
“The LORD hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God” (Isaiah 52:10).
On McCaulley’s reading, Mary’s line points back to those passages. The God of the Exodus is acting again, and the coming of Jesus is “a second departure from slavery into freedom.” This is why the song lands with such force for Black Christians. The Exodus has stood at the center of African American spirituality, and Luke opens his Gospel with a song announcing another one.
The Imagination of Their Hearts
Many readers skip the phrase that God has scattered the proud “in the imagination of their hearts” (Luke 1:51). McCaulley explains that “the people who have power imagine the future for themselves in which they’re perpetually in control of society.” God’s arrival dismantles that picture. The proud lose more than a battle. They lose the future they had imagined for themselves.
The tense deserves attention too. In the KJV every verb is already complete: he hath shewed, hath scattered, hath put down, hath filled. Mary sings this before Jesus is born, while Herod still rules and Rome still collects taxes. Nothing visible has changed. She speaks of the reversal as settled because God has already begun it in her womb. The song describes what God has committed himself to, which is a different thing from what anyone could yet see.
Is This Politics Dressed Up as Worship?
This is the strongest objection. Someone could say a song of praise has been turned into a political program. The text answers part of that charge. Mary’s words are worship from the first line, and the reversal belongs to God. She calls for no movement and names no party. She says what God has done with his own arm.
Still, the song cannot be made private. It speaks of thrones, the rich and the hungry, and removing them would be its own distortion. A careful reading keeps both sides. The song is a public claim about God’s rule, and it places the power to reverse the world in God’s hands. McCaulley concludes that because Jesus has come, believers live in a different kind of world. That claim is theological first, and it reaches into society because it is theological.
Why Did the Angels Go to the Shepherds?
Luke’s next scene follows the same logic: “And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night” (Luke 2:8). The angel tells them:
“Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:10–11).
The announcement is for all people, yet its first audience is night-shift workers in a field. Look around the nativity and no one there has money: the shepherds, Mary, Joseph and likely the household where they stayed. McCaulley compares it to a birthday party. When God celebrated the birth of his Son, he invited the shepherds.
He presses the point toward the church. Christians often celebrate a famous convert as if a celebrity’s faith proved something about the gospel. McCaulley admits he feels that pull, and he says the story contradicts it: “God doesn’t need somebody famous to bring him glory. God can get glory from the shepherds.” If that is true, it should change whom a congregation honors.
Behind the shepherds stands a larger claim about the incarnation: “the incarnation showed that there was nothing beneath God. There was no place God wasn’t willing to go in order to bring us back to himself.” McCaulley draws a practical line from it. Nobody should be told to get themselves together before coming to church, because in Christ God goes to them. For a people long treated as beneath notice, the shepherds scene is a statement of God’s priorities.
What Does Matthew Add With Herod and Egypt?
Matthew tells a darker version of the same story. Herod hears of a newborn king and orders the killing of the boys in Bethlehem two years old and under (Matthew 2:16). Joseph takes Mary and the child and flees to Egypt, and Matthew quotes Hosea: “Out of Egypt have I called my son” (Matthew 2:15, quoting Hosea 11:1).
Matthew shapes this account to recall Moses. A ruler kills Hebrew boys, and the one child who escapes will deliver his people. Reading Jesus as reliving Israel’s story is well grounded, since Matthew’s own Hosea quotation points that way. It remains an interpretive pattern, though, and it should be held as one rather than pressed into every detail.
For McCaulley, the parallel exposes how power behaves. Pharaoh and Herod both show “how often the people in power are willing to sacrifice the poor, to maintain that power.” Bethlehem’s families had no money or status, so Herod could do as he pleased. McCaulley refuses to let Christmas shrink into a snow globe: “We live in a world that kills innocent children, that doesn’t care about what happens to the poor as long as they get to eat what they want.” That is the world God came to save.
Fleeing violence for a safer country also makes Jesus a refugee. “Jesus is born into a family on the run,” McCaulley says, and the child’s first years were spent in Egypt, on African soil.
Here he draws a careful line. He does not think one can move straight from Matthew 2 to a particular national immigration policy, and he says he does not know all the laws. What the text forms is a posture. Israel was told to treat foreigners well, “for ye know the heart of a stranger, seeing ye were strangers in the land of Egypt” (Exodus 23:9). Its own slavery was meant to shape its compassion. A Christian who knows his Lord was a refugee should find it hard to read Matthew without compassion for refugees. As McCaulley puts it, “before we get to the question of policy, we have to ask the question of what is our posture?” Matthew records an event, and the event carries moral weight that forms the heart before it shapes any vote.
McCaulley gathers the reversal into one sentence:

What About the People Who Waited and Saw Nothing Change?
A song about the proud scattered can sound hollow to someone worn down by constant bad news and personal grief. Luke anticipates that reader. Before Mary appears, he introduces Zechariah and Elizabeth:
“And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless” (Luke 1:6).
They are old and childless. When the angel tells Zechariah not to fear because his prayer has been heard (Luke 1:13), he is answering a prayer carried for a lifetime.
McCaulley notices what is easy to miss. Zechariah was a priest, and Elizabeth came from a priestly family, serving a people under Roman rule. Year after year they would have heard the same question: if God is so good, why is Rome still in charge? They explained the faith to the oppressed while carrying their own sorrow. So John’s birth is more than a private answer. “It is a vindication of long suffering,” McCaulley says, a sign that God keeps his promises to his whole people.
That is how a sign works in Luke. One couple’s answered prayer does not end Roman rule or fill every empty home in Israel. It shows, in a single concrete case, that God has not forgotten what he promised. McCaulley states the logic plainly: “You don’t need everybody to get a miracle. You need enough people to get a miracle for there to be hope.”
The Black Church as the Promised Child
McCaulley extends that logic to African American history. Christians who came to faith under slavery, he argues, stood where Zechariah and Elizabeth stood. For generations they had to ask how to follow Christ in a society that denied their humanity, and they persisted. He points to early slave testimonies that, by his account, credited their freedom to God acting through the Civil War rather than to Abraham Lincoln.
On that reading, the promised child is the Black church itself: “The Black church is the miracle at the center of the African American community that forces us to ask the question, how did this come to be?” Just as John’s birth confronted the suspicion that God had forgotten Israel, the endurance of the ancestors’ faith confronts Black cynicism today.
The analogy has a clear limit. Luke was writing about John the Baptist, and Luke 1 says nothing about the Black church. McCaulley’s comparison is an application built on the text’s logic, offered as testimony to weigh. It borrows the shape of Luke’s sign and makes no claim about what Luke intended. Its strength lies in that shape: a sign of faithfulness given in the middle of oppression, while the oppression itself still stands.
What the Story Promises
Read closely, the birth narratives make no guarantee that a particular injustice will end within a lifetime. Zechariah and Elizabeth waited for decades. Bethlehem’s mothers were not spared. Mary sang of the mighty pulled down while Herod still held his throne. Anyone who tells a grieving reader that these chapters promise a quick reversal is claiming more than the text says.
They do show where God has chosen to stand: with a powerless young woman, with shepherds, with a hunted child and with a couple whose faithfulness looked fruitless. They teach readers to hear Mary’s completed verbs as God’s commitments. And they give the oppressed good reason to read the Bible as an ally, because the hope they bring to it was there first.
The first people to hear the Christmas news received it under Herod. God’s word came into the middle of the world’s cruelty, and it told them that the cruelty would not have the final say.
