Many people were taught, or simply absorbed, that Christianity reached Black people through slave ships and plantation preaching. This guide tests that story against the record. Christianity was in Africa long before Europeans carried it to enslaved people. Through Eyes of Color, a Jude 3 Project curriculum, traces the faith in its lesson on early African Christianity: from an African official baptized on a desert road in Acts 8, to churches in Ethiopia and Egypt within the first century after Christ, to North African writers whose work still shapes how the whole church talks about God.
The aim here is more than a list of facts. You will build a timeline from the evidence, read the Scripture that starts it, and practice separating what a date tells you from what someone concludes about it. You can work through this alone in one or two sittings. A group can cover it in about an hour, or split it across two meetings, with the timeline exercise as the hinge between them.
Where the usual story begins, and why that matters
Every historical claim has a starting point, and the starting point often decides the conclusion. If the story begins with the Atlantic slave trade, Christianity looks like something done to Black people. The curriculum reports that Dr. Vince Bantu makes this point. In his view, many people reject Christianity because they associate it mainly with colonialism and slavery, not because they object to Jesus. He argues that this happens when people look only at the last five centuries and never go back far enough to see the earlier church.
That is a claim about method before it is a claim about faith. Bantu is saying the problem is a shortened timeline. So the first task in this guide is simple. Before reading further, write down when you think Christianity first reached Africa. Do not look anything up. Just record your honest guess and where you think it came from: a teacher, a film, a sermon, a conversation, a picture in a children’s Bible. You will come back to it at the end.
For groups: let people share their guesses without correction. The point is to surface the assumption, not to embarrass anyone for holding it.
The first witness: a road south of Jerusalem
The story begins inside the Bible itself. Before his ascension, Jesus gave his disciples a geographic promise in Acts 1:8: “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
Luke then shows that promise unfolding in order. Acts 2 and 4 stay in Jerusalem. Acts 8 opens with persecution scattering believers through Judea and Samaria. Then, in the same chapter, an angel sends Philip south toward Gaza, where he meets a traveler Luke describes carefully in Acts 8:27: “a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship.”
Read Acts 8:26-40 slowly before going on. As you read, mark three things: what the man already believed, what he did not yet understand, and what changed by the end.
Some details reward attention. Philip hears him reading aloud and asks, in Acts 8:30, “Understandest thou what thou readest?” The KJV uses Esaias, the Greek form of Isaiah’s name, and the passage he is reading is Isaiah 53. The curriculum points out that by the law the man would have been kept out of the temple he traveled to worship at, both as a foreigner and as a eunuch. It then connects his story to Isaiah 56, a few chapters past the scroll he held, where God promises eunuchs who keep his covenant something remarkable. Isaiah 56:5 reads: “Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off.”
Whether Philip actually reached Isaiah 56 in their conversation, Luke does not say. That connection is the curriculum’s reading, and a reasonable one, but it is interpretation. What Luke does record is the man’s question in Acts 8:36: “See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?” The word hinder means prevent or stand in the way. A man who had stood outside the temple asks whether anything still stands in his way. Philip baptizes him, and Acts 8:39 ends: “he went on his way rejoicing.”
The curriculum adds one more piece of evidence about why Luke placed this story here. It cites the biblical scholar F. F. Bruce, who observes that Greeks and their neighbors thought of the Ethiopians as living at the edge of the world. If that is right, the conversion is not a side story. It is Luke’s first picture of the gospel reaching the uttermost part of the earth.
Building the timeline
Acts 8 tells us an African believer went home with the gospel. It does not tell us what happened next. Luke goes silent about him. For the next stage, the curriculum turns to church historians. Here is what it presents, in roughly chronological order:
- The first century: a church established in Ethiopia, according to Dr. David Daniels, and churches established in Egypt, according to church historian Everett Ferguson.
- About 160 to 220: Tertullian writing in Carthage.
- About 169 to 215: Clement teaching in Alexandria.
- About 185 to 251: Origen working in Alexandria.
- 203: Perpetua and Felicitas put to death in Carthage.
- 325: the Council of Nicaea, where Athanasius of Alexandria (about 296 to 373) helped oppose Arianism.
- About 354 to 430: Augustine serving as an elder in North Africa.
- The fifth century: churches beginning to appear in Nubia, leading to its Christianization in 543, again citing Ferguson.
- The sixteenth century: Martin Luther commending the Ethiopian church for not wavering from the faith, according to Daniels.
Practice: draw it. On a sheet of paper, draw a horizontal line. Mark the life of Jesus at the left. Mark the present day at the right. Place every item above on the line in its proper spot. Then mark the stretch Bantu calls the last five centuries. Put your opening guess on the line too.
Now look at what the drawing shows. More than fifteen hundred years of African Christian history sit to the left of the period most people treat as the beginning. Notice especially the last item. If Daniels is right, a European reformer knew of and praised an African church that was already ancient in his own day. The curriculum cites Bantu’s point that African Christians in Egypt, North Africa, Ethiopia and Nubia were worshiping Jesus before Islam existed. Your line should make that visible without anyone having to argue it.
For groups: if you have space, do this on one large sheet together and let different people place different names. Disagreement about where something belongs is useful. It sends people back to the dates.
The people on the line
Dates alone can feel like trivia. The curriculum fills the timeline with people whose work the whole church still uses. Its summary is blunt: “You can’t go to a seminary, preach a sermon, or talk about the nature of Christ without bumping up against the influence of the Early African church.”
Here is what it says each figure contributed.
Tertullian of Carthage is credited, citing Ferguson, with coining the term Trinity, along with original sin and sacrament. The curriculum is honest that he was a complicated figure. His importance does not depend on his being admirable in everything.
Clement of Alexandria was an apologist who used philosophy to explain the faith to people far from God. The curriculum describes his book The Instructor as the first literary work on Christian ethics, presenting Jesus as the divine Word who teaches believers how to live.
Origen, also of Alexandria, is acknowledged as being near the edge of orthodoxy, yet the curriculum credits him with giving the church a model for how to study Scripture. It says he, Clement and Tertullian were the first to use the language of a new covenant to name which books the church should recognize as authoritative.
Perpetua, a 22-year-old mother, refused to renounce Christ even when her father urged her to be sensible. She nursed her infant in prison before her death. Felicitas was pregnant when arrested and gave birth to a daughter days before her execution. The curriculum, drawing on a Catholic account of their lives, records that when someone asked how she would endure martyrdom while she cried out in labor, she answered that for now she suffered herself, but then Another would be in her and suffer for her, because she would be suffering for him.
Athanasius faced the question of whether Jesus was fully God. Arius, a popular Alexandrian preacher, taught that there was once a time when the Son did not exist. Athanasius saw that if Jesus were less than fully God, he could not save. He argued this at Nicaea in 325 and, according to the curriculum, was exiled five times for refusing to give ground afterward. That debate concerned what the church still confesses: one God in three persons, co-equal and co-eternal, and Jesus as fully God and fully man.
Augustine of Hippo, the curriculum says, shaped much of how the church thinks about its role in the world and about grace and free will in salvation.
Testing the claims: date versus interpretation
A careful historian keeps two questions apart. First: what happened, and when? Second: what does it mean? Some statements in this lesson are firmly anchored in sources. Others are interpretations or summaries that deserve checking. Doing that checking does not weaken the case. It makes you someone a skeptic can trust.
Practice: sort and verify. Take three claims from this guide and place each in one of two columns, Date or event, and Interpretation. Then pick one to investigate further this week, using a library, a church history textbook, or the sources the curriculum names, such as Ferguson’s Church History or Thomas Oden’s How Africa Shaped the Christian Mind.
Good candidates for testing:
- The curriculum calls the Ethiopian official the first non-Jew to receive Christ. Read Acts 10 and Acts 11:18 alongside Acts 8. How does Luke present Cornelius? What does Acts 8:27, which says the man came to Jerusalem to worship, suggest about his relationship to Israel’s faith?
- Daniels says Ethiopia was the first kingdom to accept Christianity as its state religion. What would you need to know to confirm a first? Which other early kingdoms would you need to check?
- Tertullian is credited with coining Trinity. What language did he write in? Is the claim about the first surviving use of a word, or about the idea itself? The doctrine rests on the whole witness of Scripture, not on who first used the word.
- Acts calls the man’s queen Candace of the Ethiopians. Find out what territory the ancient name Ethiopia covered. Is it the same as the modern country?
You may find that some claims need careful wording, or that historians state them differently. That is normal. Notice, though, what does not change: the first-century presence of the faith in Africa and the North African writers on your timeline do not depend on any single disputed first.
Questions for discussion
- Look back at your opening guess. Where did it come from, and how far off was it from your timeline?
- Bantu’s argument depends on where the story starts. What other beliefs have you held that changed once you saw a longer stretch of history?
- Luke records the official’s position, his nation and his status as a eunuch. Why might those details matter to the point Luke is making in Acts 1-8?
- Several of these figures, Tertullian and Origen especially, are described as flawed or controversial. How should we honor people whose contributions were real but whose lives or ideas were mixed?
- Perpetua and Felicitas were young mothers who faced death. What does their story add that the theologians’ stories do not?
- If a friend told you Christianity was forced on Black people, which single piece of this timeline would you start with, and why that one?
- The curriculum insists this history is not meant to diminish European believers, writing, “The same blood that was shed for us was shed for them.” How can you tell this story without turning it into a contest between peoples?
For groups: questions 4 and 7 tend to produce the most honest conversation. Leave room for them, and resist the urge to rush to a tidy answer.
What changed, and what did not
The last five centuries brought real and grievous wrongs, including Christian language misused to defend slavery. Naming that history is part of telling the truth. But the timeline shows that this period did not create African Christianity. An African official carried the gospel home in the first century. African churches were thriving within a hundred years of Jesus. African thinkers helped the church say clearly who Jesus is. The faith was in Africa, and shaped by Africans, long before European colonization.
What did not change is the person at the center of it all. The God who sent Philip to a desert road is the same one later generations worshiped and argued about and died for. Psalm 68:31 records an old hope: “Princes shall come out of Egypt; Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands unto God.” Christians have long read the eunuch’s story as part of that hope coming true. That connection is interpretation, not something Acts states, but it is a reading with deep roots.
Before you finish, return to the guess you wrote at the start and write one or two sentences beside it, correcting it with a date and a name from your timeline. Then choose one figure from this guide to study further, and think of one person you could invite to study with you. The curriculum puts the stakes plainly: “Brothers and sisters, in order for us to competently contend for the faith against these lies, we must know our history.”
