The objection usually comes with a picture attached. Someone whispers a sentence to the next person, who whispers it to the next, and by the end of the line the message is nonsense. The Bible, the argument goes, has passed through so many languages and so many hands that whatever its authors meant is gone.
The picture fails for a simple historical reason: the line it describes never existed. The English Bibles most people read today were translated from Hebrew and Greek texts, not from older English Bibles or from Latin. Each new translation goes back to the source instead of passing along the last version. Translation also began centuries before Jesus was born, and it has always depended on copied texts that could be checked against one another.
Dr. Paul Wegner, who teaches at Gateway Seminary and has written a book tracing where the Bible came from, walks through that history in conversation with Lisa Fields. Followed in order, the chronology answers the telephone objection better than any slogan can.
What a game of telephone would require
A telephone game works because each person hears only the person beside them. Nobody can walk back to the start of the line and check the first sentence. Errors pile up because each step depends entirely on the one before it.
For the Bible to be lost this way, three things would have to be true. Translators would have to work from the previous translation instead of the original languages. The original-language texts would have to have disappeared, leaving nothing to check against. And copyists would have to work with no method for catching mistakes. The history contradicts each of these, and it helps to take them in the order they happened.
Translation began before Jesus was born
The first major translation of the Hebrew Scriptures did not come from medieval monks or from King James’s scholars. Wegner dates the Septuagint, a Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible, to roughly 250 to 150 BC. Translation sits at the very beginning of the story Christians tell about their Bible, not somewhere near its end.
Wegner draws a less obvious point from that date. A translation is evidence of the text it translates. As he puts it, “before you could have a translation, you’ve gotta have a text for them to translate.” If Hebrew Scripture was being rendered into Greek in the third and second centuries BC, a recognized body of Hebrew writings already existed to work from. The earliest translation is also one of the earliest witnesses to the text itself.
The concern for written words that later readers could consult runs deeper still. Wegner points to the passages where God tells Moses to write the law in a book and place it beside the ark, so the people would hear it and know what God required (Deuteronomy 31:24-26). Scripture presents itself from the start as something meant to be kept, read again and understood. Translation extended that purpose to people who no longer read Hebrew.
Copyists who checked their work
A skeptic can grant all of this and press harder. Translators may have worked from Hebrew and Greek, but those texts were themselves copies of copies. Perhaps the telephone game simply happened inside one language.
The scribes are the answer to that worry. Their job was to copy Scripture, and later Jewish tradition preserves the rules that governed the work. Wegner lists several. First, “you could never write anything from memory.” A scribe had to look at the text in front of him. Pages were limited to a set number of lines so the writing stayed legible. Letters were counted, so a page with the wrong total could be traced back to the error. And Wegner reports that “if you made more than three mistakes on one page, you had to destroy it and start again.”
Wegner is careful about dates. The written rules could go back as early as the second century AD, he says, and they may preserve older practice, but the information to settle that is not there. So the rules establish the standard the tradition set for itself. They cannot show that any particular scribe in any particular century met it.
He offers a piece of evidence from earlier. In the first century, he says, scribes describe three scrolls kept in the temple. Where two agreed against the third, the third was corrected. That is textual criticism in its simplest form: catching a mistake by comparing witnesses instead of trusting any single copy. Lisa Fields draws the conclusion the scribal record supports: “it wasn’t a careless act. It was something they did with carefulness.”
The same habit explains why the original manuscripts did not survive. When a scroll grew old or began to fray, scribes made a fresh copy, and in Wegner’s words, “apparently those new copies were also as authoritative as the old ones.” The value lay in the words, not in one particular piece of papyrus or animal skin. A telephone game has a single fragile line. A text copied this way leaves many witnesses that can be laid side by side.
From Latin to the King James
The timeline continues past the Septuagint. Old Latin translations circulated early. A Syriac version followed. The Latin Vulgate appeared around AD 400 and served the Western church for many centuries. This is the stretch the telephone picture usually has in mind: Hebrew to Greek to Latin to English, each layer built on the last. Many Christians did read Scripture mainly through Latin for a long time. But the Hebrew and Greek texts went on being copied, which is why later scholars could go back to them. The middle of the story added translations alongside the source texts. It did not replace them.
The King James translation arrived around 1611 and became the standard English Bible for roughly four centuries. Its translators worked from a printed Greek text called the Textus Receptus, which simply means the received text. Wegner clears up a common misreading of the name: “it almost makes it sound from God, but that’s not really true.” It names a text that became standard, nothing more.
Wegner has no interest in belittling the King James scholars. “At the time in 1600, they did a superb job,” he says. The change came afterward. “But in that 400 years, God’s given us a lot of Greek and Hebrew text that we didn’t even know existed back in the 16 hundreds.”
This is the turning point the telephone objection gets backward. It assumes that distance from the original means less knowledge of the original. For the last four centuries, scholars have had more ancient manuscript evidence to work from, not less. The King James and New King James follow the Textus Receptus by design. Most other modern translations work from current editions of the Hebrew and Greek built on that wider evidence.
Why English versions read so differently
Around 1900, readers increasingly found the King James’s English stiff and hard to follow, and new translations multiplied through the following decades, eventually including the New International Version in the 1970s. None of them was a translation of the King James. As Wegner puts it, “most modern translations start with the same Greek and Hebrew text.”
That raises an obvious question. If the source is shared, why does a shelf of Bibles look so confusing? Wegner says he has friends who walked into a Bible bookstore and came out more confused than when they went in. The differences, in his account, come from method. The common modern English translations “all of them start with the same Greek and Hebrew text. It’s just that the principles they use to translate are quite a bit different.”
The basic tension is one every translator faces: “every time you try to make it more readable, you’re gonna lose some of the literalness.” The New American Standard Bible leans hard toward the literal, even following the sentence patterns of the Hebrew and Greek. That helps in close study, when a reader wants to see as nearly as English allows what the original says. The New International Version and the New Living lean toward being readily understood. Wegner admits he does not always think they succeed. He still insists each version has a purpose, and he notes that translations go through committees of roughly 70 to 100 people checking both accuracy and natural English.
So when someone asks which translation is best, his reply is practical: “it depends what you want it for.” The variety on the shelf reflects choices about readability and literalness made from a common source.
The objection that remains
The strongest form of the objection is not the telephone picture at all. It is the narrower claim that manuscripts disagree in places, so no one can be certain of every word. Wegner grants this. There are a few places, he says, where scholars may not be able to confirm which of two readings is original, sometimes over one or two words.
What he denies is that those uncertainties change what the Bible teaches. Most such differences, he explains, are like the difference between “you said” and “they said,” where “the difference between that is not gonna affect the meaning of the text at all.” He then repeats a long-standing judgment in his field: “no element of theology is in question based upon the translations that we have. So they’re all accurate enough to give us an accurate picture of what we need to know about God.”
That claim is confident and also limited. It does not say every translation suits every purpose. It does not say textual questions are imaginary. It says the remaining questions are small enough, and the evidence broad enough, that no central Christian belief depends on resolving them.
That limit is part of why the history can be trusted. A story claiming a perfect chain without a single uncertain word would be harder to believe. The record shows something more ordinary: copyists who checked their work, many surviving witnesses, translators who keep returning to the source, and a body of ancient evidence that has grown over the last four centuries. The reader holding a modern English Bible is not at the end of a line of whispers. That Bible was made directly from the Hebrew and Greek, checked against more of the ancient record than earlier generations could see.
