A Bible habit usually lasts when it stops resting on one person’s willpower. Put it on a fixed night, with a few other people, and give it stretches of Scripture long enough to follow the story. This guide helps you set up exactly that: one season of weekly gatherings where a small group listens to whole sections of the Bible read aloud, then talks about what it heard. A season can run ten to twelve weeks.
You can use the guide alone or with others. On your own, work through the first two sections, then invite two or three people before the first gathering. As a group, take the first two sections together at your opening meeting and plan the season before you leave the room. Nothing here asks anyone to share more than they want to.
Before the first gathering: measure what is actually happening
Start with an honest count, not a resolution. Take a sheet of paper and list the last seven days. For each day, write down any time you took in Scripture, how many minutes it lasted, and how many chapters in a row you read or heard. A verse on a phone screen counts. So does a sermon text. Write the real numbers, even if the page stays mostly blank.
The exercise is not meant to shame anyone. It exists because most of us guess wrong. Richelle Bryan, a program officer at the Grace and Mercy Foundation who works with its Just Show Up initiative, admits that she first thought the idea did not apply to her. She was in seminary and already read her Bible. When she looked more closely, her reaction was “wow, I don’t read the Bible as much as I thought I did.” If someone studying apologetics can overestimate her intake, a written count is a fair place for anyone to begin.
Now look at your sheet and ask one question: what kept the numbers low? Bryan’s diagnosis is that the gap is rarely desire. In her words, “the problem is that the people know they should read the Bible, but they need a strategy.” Write one sentence naming the specific thing that broke your last attempt. Leave out the spiritual-sounding answer and write the practical one: the time of day, the length, the isolation, the fact that nobody noticed when you stopped. Keep this sheet. You will come back to it in week four and again at the end.
Hear a long passage the way it was first received
Bryan grounds the whole practice in how God’s people met Scripture in the Bible itself. One of her examples is Ezra in Nehemiah 8. Do this exercise before you read any commentary on it.
Have one person read Nehemiah 8:1-12 aloud at a steady pace. Everyone else closes their Bible and simply listens. If you are alone, use an audio Bible and do not follow along on the page. Afterward, without looking, jot down what you remember: who was there, how long the reading went, what the listeners did, and how the day ended.
Then open the text and check yourself against it. The KJV says Ezra “read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law” (Nehemiah 8:3). That is a whole morning of listening, and the audience includes everyone old enough to understand.
Look also at verse 8: “So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading” (Nehemiah 8:8). The reading came with help. Someone made sure the hearers grasped what they were hearing. Then notice the ending. The people wept when they heard the words, and they were told instead to go eat, drink, and send portions to others. Verse 12 explains the celebration: “And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared unto them” (Nehemiah 8:12).
Observation prompts for this passage:
- What did you remember from hearing it, and what had you missed?
- Where in the passage does understanding happen, and who makes it possible?
- What is the connection in verse 12 between understanding the words and sharing food?
Next, read three shorter texts. Paul expected his letters to travel and be read to gathered churches: “And when this epistle is read among you, cause that it be read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and that ye likewise read the epistle from Laodicea” (Colossians 4:16). He told Timothy, “Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine” (1 Timothy 4:13). “Give attendance to” is older English for devoting yourself to something, and many modern translations make clear that the reading in view is public reading in the congregation. Revelation opens with a blessing on a reader and a listening audience: “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy” (Revelation 1:3).
Read these carefully. Nehemiah 8, Colossians 4:16 and Revelation 1:3 mostly describe how God’s people received Scripture. Bryan herself notes one reason: most people then had no personal copy. These passages do not forbid private reading, and Bryan does not claim they do. She still reads on her own and says she treasures it. The texts show something narrower. Shared, extended hearing was a normal way God’s people knew the Word, so a group listening practice is not a gimmick. It goes back to something old.
Plan the season
Bryan sums up what the gatherings need: they are consistent, weekly or every two weeks; they are communal, even if that means two or three people; and the readings are extended, long enough to hear context. On that last point she is blunt: “the context is everything.” Build your season around those three requirements.
- Find the room. Bryan’s advice is to start where people already meet: “we find that if you already have a small group that’s happening, that’s the ideal place.” If you have no group, two or three friends are enough. Keep the group to about ten so everyone can talk afterward.
- Fix one night and one length. Choose a time you can protect for the whole season, and decide how long a session runs. Bryan describes sessions of about 45 minutes as one example. Put every date on the calendar now, not week by week.
- Choose two books to run side by side. The gatherings Bryan describes listen to several chapters from Israel’s Scriptures and several from the books about Jesus and the church in each sitting. For one season, choose one book from Genesis through Malachi and one from Matthew through Revelation. Pick books long enough to carry a story or an argument, and plan to finish them. A season will not cover the whole Bible. Bryan notes that with the dramatized audio Bible her groups use, “It actually takes 90 hours to complete the entire Bible.” A season can finish two books.
- Pick an audio Bible. Bryan’s groups use a dramatized recording with different voices. Lisa Fields, founder and president of Jude 3 Project, mentions that some versions use a cast of actors, and that a good voice helps a group stay with the slower stretches. People can follow along in print or simply listen.
- Pair people up. Assign each person a partner for the season: someone to ride with, text on the day, or save a seat for. Bryan recalls a participant who said, “I wouldn’t show up if it wasn’t for the fact that I have to pick up my friend and come to the Bible listening.” Plan for the nights when nobody feels like coming.
- Bring food. Bryan describes it plainly: “we’re getting physical and spiritual food.” Rotate who brings it so the cost does not fall on the host.
Each session can follow the same simple order. Open by praying a psalm aloud together. Give a short introduction to each book, under a minute; Bryan says her gatherings always do this, and it works the way the Levites “gave the sense” in Nehemiah 8, orienting people before they listen. Then listen to the chapters from the first book, then the chapters from the second, without stopping to discuss. Close by praying a psalm again. After that, take ten or fifteen minutes for people to say what they noticed.
For whoever hosts: rotate the one-minute introduction so it does not become your lecture. Never ask anyone to read aloud unless they volunteer. Bryan points out that the listening format includes people who never learned to read, and a careless request can single them out. In the conversation afterward, start with observation (what did you hear?) before opinion. Let silence sit. Some people will listen for weeks before they say anything, and that is fine.
Week four: test the habit against your starting sheet
Around the fourth gathering, pull out the sheet from before the season and fill in a fresh week. Compare the two. The point is not to celebrate a higher number. The point is to check your first diagnosis. Was the problem what you thought it was? If the group is holding together, which of the three requirements is doing the most work for you: the fixed night, the people, or the length?
This is also the week to add a second practice, one that keeps listening from becoming passive. Lisa Fields admits that early in her faith, “if I saw genealogy, I would just skip it and go to the story.” A group that listens straight through cannot skip, and that means everyone will meet passages they find dull, confusing or troubling. Fields names why this matters for defending the faith. Many Christians, she says, “have signed up for Christianity, but have not read the terms and conditions,” and when someone raises a hard passage, “you’re gonna be caught off guard by passages that you don’t know.”
So start a shared list. At each gathering, anyone may name one passage that confused or disturbed them. No one has to explain why. Write each one down. Once a month, two volunteers choose an item from the list, look into its historical and literary setting during the week, and bring back five minutes on what they found and what remains unclear. Bryan describes this movement: if you hear a hard passage “and then you say, I’m gonna go and research this,” you are in a better place to understand and defend it. Listening opens the question. Study carries it further.
Take one fair objection seriously here. Can group listening become a way to stay a permanent audience, always hearing and never reading for yourself? It can, if the group lets it. Bryan’s own testimony points the other way: hearing in community was different from reading alone, and she kept both. A simple check is whether the season is sending people back to their own Bibles. If the shared list stays empty and no one ever looks anything up, the practice has gone passive, and the group should say so.
Discussion questions for the season
Use one or two of these after the listening on any given night. Do not try to cover them all at once.
- Your starting sheet named one reason earlier attempts failed. After a few weeks, does that still look like the real reason, or has something else come into view?
- In Nehemiah 8 the reading came with explanation and ended in a shared meal. What, if anything, changes for you when hearing Scripture is attached to a table instead of a schedule?
- Bryan says there are times when hearing the Word draws something out that reading did not. Has that happened to anyone this season? If not, what do you think gets in the way?
- Bryan says that listening to Scripture “gets man out of the way, and you just hear the word of God.” What would you lose if the group spent more time on comment and less on listening? What would you gain?
- Which passage on the shared list would you be least ready to discuss with a skeptical friend? What would you need to know first?
- Bryan warns that evangelists “treat getting saved as the finish line when it’s really just the beginning.” Who in your life, perhaps someone new to faith or someone outside church entirely, might come to a gathering like this before they would come to a Bible study?
The last gathering of the season
On the final night, finish both books, even if the session runs long. Then, before anyone talks about whether to continue, fill in your weekly sheet one last time and set it next to the first one.
Read Nehemiah 8:12 aloud once more, and let each person answer one question, or pass: what do you understand now about these two books that you did not understand at the start of the season? After that, decide together whether to renew, what night, and which two books come next. A habit that lasts is usually one a group chose twice.
