The belief that your words can create your reality did not begin in Scripture, according to Pastor Tyran Laws, a pastor on the south side of Chicago. He traces it to a tenet of Eastern mysticism: a person can alter reality by force of will. That idea reached churches through the Word of Faith movement, attached itself to Proverbs 18:21, and changed faith from trust in God into a force aimed at him.
The account Laws and Lisa Fields give is a sequence without dates. It runs from an Eastern idea about the power of the will, to white Pentecostal circles, to Black Pentecostal churches, and finally to the declarations now heard in prayer lines and sermons. Neither speaker names founders, decades or books along the way. What follows keeps to that order of stages and to what changed at each one, without claiming a fuller chronology than the speakers supply.
Where does the story start?
Laws first refuses a shortcut. It would be easy to treat anything supernatural as suspect and call the problem solved. He defines mysticism in its simplest sense as “religious paranormal activity,” meaning receiving something from God through means other than ordinary reasoning. On that definition the Bible is full of it, from visions to the burning bush. “Our contention is not with mysticism in of itself because the Bible is filled with mysticism,” he says.
His target is narrower: mystical ideas centered in Eastern religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism, and specifically what happens when Christians carry them into the Bible. “The problem is when we highlight those eastern mystic concepts and then try to project them onto scripture in a way that was never intended for scripture,” Laws explains.
The concept that matters for this story is one he names directly. Through the right meditation and the right kind of thinking, this tenet holds, a person can change their circumstances and environment by their will. At this first stage the power sits entirely in the human mind. God does not appear in the idea at all, which is why it is not yet a theology of faith. Something had to happen before it could become one.
How did the idea cross into the church?
The crossing, in Laws’s telling, happened through the Word of Faith movement, which he says has much of its foundation in Eastern mysticism even though most people do not know it. He describes the spread as happening “without us even knowing it.” That phrase answers the question of what participants could have known. The Christians who absorbed the idea were not knowingly importing another religion’s teaching. They met a concept that seemed to explain certain verses, and the explanation felt right.
Laws describes the mechanism in a way that applies at every stage. A person encounters an idea, then finds something in Scripture that resembles it. From then on the idea shapes how the verse is read, instead of the verse shaping the idea. Once that reversal happens, the interpretation is brought to the text rather than drawn out of it, and the borrowed concept starts to look like the Bible’s own teaching.
Lisa Fields then supplies the next turn in the sequence, one many readers will not expect. People sometimes assume this teaching started in the Black community, she notes, but in her account it took hold in white Pentecostal circles first, and Black Pentecostal churches adopted it from them. Laws agrees: “it was in other contexts before it even came to our context.”
Each stage, then, received the idea already wearing Christian language. A congregation that picked it up from another church had no way to see the earlier step, where the same thought about altering reality carried no reference to God. The sequence also corrects a stereotype. Word of Faith teaching is sometimes treated as a peculiarly Black church problem, while both speakers describe it as something Black churches received from elsewhere.
Why did Proverbs 18:21 become the doorway?
A borrowed idea needs a text to rest on, and for speaking it into existence the text is almost always the same. Proverbs 18:21 reads, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” Fields observes that many churches adopted the declare-your-reality teaching because of this verse, which read alone seems to give speech the power of life itself.
Laws answers by asking what kind of writing this is. Proverbs, he says, are “principles, not promises,” and he offers a picture of what that means: “a proverb is a slice of reality.” A slice of reality is true without being the whole picture or covering every case. He makes the point with an American saying: “If you do the crime, you’ll do the time.” Everyone hears that as a general truth, and everyone knows people who did the crime and never did the time. Nobody calls the saying a lie when that happens, because nobody took it as a guarantee.
The book itself shows why this reading is required. Proverbs 26:4 says, “Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.” The next verse, Proverbs 26:5, says, “Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.” Treated as unconditional laws, the two lines cancel each other. Treated as wisdom, they fit together, since engaging a fool sometimes drags you down and leaving him unanswered sometimes feeds his pride, and the reader has to judge which case he faces. Fields makes a related observation: read as flat literal statements, Proverbs and Ecclesiastes seem to fight each other.
Laws calls Proverbs 18:21 “a statement of accountability in Proverbs.” The book returns again and again to the weight of speech, how words build up or tear down and how we answer for them. That claim stays fully true. What the verse never offers is a promise that confident speech will rearrange physical or financial reality. Turning a principle about responsibility into a mechanism for control is the move Laws describes, and this verse sat close enough to the borrowed idea to carry it.
What changed when faith became a force?
Here the sequence reaches its consequence. Once the idea of altering reality by will met Christian vocabulary, it became a way of thinking about faith itself. Laws asks the question bluntly, “is faith a force that we can control God with?” and then gives the sentence at the center of his account: “we end up having faith in faith and not faith in God.”
That sentence marks a shift in the object of trust. In the older Eastern idea, the power lay in the person’s will. In its Christian form, the power lies in the person’s believing and declaring. God is still named, yet his place has changed, from the one being trusted to the one being acted upon. The vocabulary is Christian while the structure underneath is the one Laws traced to Eastern mysticism.
Fields names what this structure does to people: “This whole idea of I can create my reality based on my words and my faith alone is dangerous, because what happens when that doesn’t happen?” A system built on declared outcomes has only two explanations when the outcome fails. Either the person lacked enough belief or used the wrong words, or God failed to deliver. Both conclusions are false, and both fall hardest on people who are already sick, broke or grieving.
She also proposes a test. Look at the lives of the people teaching it, and ask whether those lives are actually shaped by what they declare. If someone announced you would be debt free in thirty days, did that happen? A teaching that claims to produce results invites a check on the results. Fields is just as clear that prayer itself survives the critique. We can pray, she says, and God may bring about what we ask if it is in his will. The difference lies in where the authority sits: a request goes to a person with a will of his own, while a declaration treats the speaking as the cause.
Why did no one notice the borrowing?
An idea travels unnoticed only when the people receiving it lack the tools to recognize it. Laws places much of the blame on the pulpit, himself included. “A lot of our theology is grounded in religious superstition,” he says, meaning the habit of treating words or rituals as if they held power in themselves, which is exactly where an idea like this finds a home. On the teaching of interpretation he is direct: “We haven’t always been faithful in teaching our people.” He has often heard that congregations cannot handle that much information, and he rejects it: “Yes, they can.” Then he puts the burden where he thinks it belongs: “You’re the pastor. You’re supposed to teach them and put it in a way that they can.”
Fields offers the corrective in a line she picked up in seminary: “The Bible is not to be taken literally, but literarily.” A reader who knows to treat a proverb as a proverb has a defense against this misreading no matter where it came from.
Does a resemblance prove a lineage?
The strongest objection to this history comes from Laws’s own reasoning. In the same conversation he takes apart the claim that Christianity borrowed its beliefs from ancient Egyptian religion. That argument, he says, rests on similarity alone: two traditions use a similar term, one came first, so the later one must have copied it. Similar language can carry different meanings, and people can reach the same image independently. “We oftentimes are just drawn away by superficial parallels,” he warns.
Applied to his own account, that standard has teeth. Showing that Word of Faith teaching resembles an Eastern mystical tenet does not by itself prove that one descended from the other. Laws presents the lineage as a finding of his research, yet the conversation does not walk through the teachers or writings by which the idea passed. Fields’s point about white Pentecostal churches is likewise her account, given without names or dates. The genealogy is these speakers’ argument. It deserves weight, and its documentary trail lies outside what they lay out here.
The stronger half of the case does not depend on that trail. Laws’s main test concerns fit rather than origin: whether the application drawn from a verse is what the text was meant to support once it is read in context. His answer is no. Proverbs 18:21 is a proverb whether the declare-your-reality reading came from Eastern mysticism or arose some other way. The history explains why a misreading could feel natural to churches that inherited it secondhand, while the genre settles that it is a misreading. Someone could doubt every step of the genealogy and still have no ground for reading a wisdom saying as a guarantee.
Quick answers
- Did the speak-it-into-existence teaching start in Black churches? Lisa Fields says no. In her account it took hold in white Pentecostal circles first, and Black Pentecostal churches adopted it from there.
- Is all mysticism unbiblical? Laws says no. Visions and encounters like the burning bush fill the Bible. His concern is reading specific Eastern ideas into Scripture.
- Does Proverbs 18:21 mean nothing, then? It means a great deal. Laws reads it as a statement of accountability: our words carry real weight, and we will eat their fruit.
- Is it wrong to ask God boldly for something? Fields affirms that we can pray and that God may bring about what we ask if it is in his will. The problem she names is treating our words and faith alone as the power that creates the result.
