A standalone study on faith, evidence, and what to do with honest doubt.
The Big Question
Is faith just believing things without evidence? This study works through Alycia Wood's case that Christianity invites the mind in, that science has real limits, and that doubt can be a doorway rather than a dead end.
Naming the Bias Before It Names You
Many people carry an unexamined assumption that intelligent, educated people eventually outgrow faith. Wood says she met this assumption constantly in apologetics, not as an occasional insult but as a default starting point for many atheists.
“Atheists truly believe that religious people are stupid.” – Alycia Wood
1 Peter 3:15 calls believers to always be ready to give a reason for their hope. That command exists precisely because the bias Wood names is real, and the only honest answer to it is being able to actually explain your faith, not just defend your right to hold it.
Where Science Stops
Wood does not set up a science-versus-faith battle. She likes science, trusts evidence and history, and is not interested in pretending otherwise. Her claim is narrower and harder to dismiss: science has edges, and pretending it has no edges is its own kind of dishonesty.
“Science can't determine morality.” – Alycia Wood
Mark 12:30 commands loving God with your mind as well as your heart, soul, and strength. That command only makes sense if the mind has real work to do in faith, work science alone cannot finish, because morality, beauty, and meaning sit outside what a lab can measure.
Ordinary Trust You Already Practice
Wood's example about knowing your own mother is worth sitting with longer than it first seems to deserve. Almost every important belief you hold, about people, about history, about your own identity, rests on testimony and relationship rather than laboratory proof.
“You don't have to scientifically prove using DNA that your mother is your mother in order for her to be your mother.” – Alycia Wood
If that kind of trust is rational in ordinary life, the burden of proof shifts. The question is not whether faith requires some trust beyond laboratory data. All trust does. The question is whether the trust is well placed, built on real testimony and real evidence, the way biblical faith claims to be.
Thomas: The Doubter Jesus Met With Evidence
John 20:24-29 is the test case worth memorizing. Thomas refuses to believe secondhand. He wants to see and touch the wounds himself. Jesus does not rebuke that demand. He meets it directly.
“If faith is blind, if there's no evidence in faith, then Jesus got it wrong.” – Alycia Wood
Rasool Berry's observation about Jesus's pattern sharpens this further: “It fascinates me that Jesus was harder on religious people than he was with the sinners.” Thomas's honest doubt got evidence and gentleness. Confident religious certainty, elsewhere in the gospels, got Jesus's sharpest words. That pattern is worth examining against your own instincts about who deserves patience.
Doubt as Doorway, Not Dead End
Wood's candor about her own doubt is part of what makes this teaching trustworthy rather than theoretical. She is not describing doubt from a safe distance. She has walked through it and come out the other side still convinced, having actually looked for answers rather than burying the questions.
“I don't have to forsake my mind in order to believe.” – Alycia Wood
Lisa Fields' pastoral instinct matters here: “If you don't listen for the pain point, you'll be arguing about things that are issues, but not the root of their issue.” Often the real question underneath a doubt is not primarily intellectual. It is personal, wounded, or exhausted. Good answers still matter, but they land better after real listening.
What Honest Faith Is Not Afraid to Admit
There is a quieter form of fear running through a lot of church culture: the fear that admitting uncertainty about anything will be read as weak faith. Wood's whole approach pushes back against that fear directly. A faith confident enough to investigate its own claims has nothing to be afraid of from a hard question.
That is different from saying every question has an easy or fully satisfying answer. Some questions stay hard for a long time, even for serious scholars. The point is not that every doubt resolves neatly. The point is that the search itself is not a betrayal of faith. It can be one of the most faithful things you do.
A Habit Worth Building
Wood's example suggests a concrete habit rather than just an attitude: when a hard question lands, write it down instead of burying it. Give yourself permission to not have the answer today, and give yourself a real commitment to go looking, whether that means a conversation with a pastor, a book, or simply honest prayer.
This matters because the alternative, suppressing the question until it either fades from neglect or explodes later under pressure, rarely produces a stronger faith. It produces a brittle one. The muscle you are building by investigating doubts now is the same muscle that will hold when a much harder season eventually arrives.
Scripture to Sit With
- John 20:24-29. Jesus offers Thomas the evidence he asked for, then calls him to believe.
- Mark 12:30. Love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. The mind is included, not excluded.
- 1 Peter 3:15. Always be ready to give a reason for the hope you have. Faith that can explain itself is the goal.

Discussion Questions
- Have you ever felt looked down on for your faith? How did you respond?
- Could you explain to a skeptical friend why you believe? Where do you feel ready, and where do you feel thin?
- Wood names real limits to science. Where have you seen science treated as if it could answer everything?
- Read John 20:24-29. How does Jesus treat Thomas's doubt? What does that tell you about how God meets your questions?
- Wood says she has doubted her own faith. Is doubt safe to admit in your church or small group? What would help make it safe?
If You Lead a Small Group
Watch for the member who treats this study as purely academic and never admits a doubt of their own. The point is not winning a debate about epistemology. It is creating a room where someone could say "I don't know if I believe this" out loud and still be welcome at the table next week.
If someone does voice a real doubt, resist the urge to immediately supply an answer. Follow Lisa Fields' instinct first: listen for the actual pain point underneath the question before reaching for an argument.
Go Deeper
This study draws on Alycia Wood's Jude 3 Project teaching on engaging atheism, and her conversation on the existence of God. A related episode worth your time: "Does God Exist?", also with Alycia Wood, on following the evidence toward faith.
Why This Is Not Just an Academic Exercise
It would be easy to file this whole study under apologetics trivia, useful for arguing with a skeptic online but disconnected from your actual walk with God. That misses what is really at stake. How you answer "is faith blind" shapes whether you ever bring your hardest questions to God directly, or whether you quietly keep them to yourself out of fear that asking is itself a failure.
Wood's own story is the better model. She did not protect her faith by avoiding the hard questions. She protected it, and ultimately strengthened it, by walking straight at them. That is available to you too, whatever question you have been avoiding.
A Closing Reflection
Name one doubt you have been carrying quietly. Instead of burying it, bring it into the light this week, in prayer or with someone you trust, and start looking for the answer.
