Revelation is a letter. A prisoner wrote it to seven real congregations in what is now western Turkey, and its central claim is that the Lamb who was slain, not the empire that killed him, holds the future. That claim steadies believers who are suffering and confronts believers who have grown comfortable. Questions about the timing of the end are real, and Christians answer them differently. They come second, because the book’s own opening chapters tell us what it is for.
The New Testament scholar Craig Keener, who earned his PhD at Duke and has written a commentary on Revelation, puts the purpose in one line: “the message of Revelation is a wake up call for sleeping churches.” It is also, in his words, “an encouragement to those who are suffering.” Both halves matter. A reading that only comforts misses the warning. A reading that only frightens misses the hope.
What kind of writing is Revelation?
Start with how the book introduces itself. After a short prologue, it opens like a letter: “John to the seven churches which are in Asia” (Revelation 1:4). A greeting of grace and peace follows, the way Paul opens his letters, and the book closes with a blessing in chapter 22. Whatever else Revelation is, it was addressed to named congregations and meant to be read aloud to them.
It also calls itself prophecy (1:3), and it speaks in the visionary imagery of the apocalyptic writings: beasts, seals, trumpets, cosmic battles. Genre shapes reading. Symbolic visions are not photographs. When a vision pictures a dragon or a beast with ten horns, the question is what the image stands for, and the first place to look is the rest of Scripture. Most of Revelation’s imagery, Keener observes, either alludes to the Old Testament or can be worked out from elsewhere in Revelation. A few details need knowledge of the first-century world. Very little requires today’s news.
Who were the first readers?
John tells us where he was and why: “I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ” (Revelation 1:9). He writes as a fellow sufferer, not a distant forecaster. Patmos, according to Keener, was among the islands where Rome banished political prisoners. John “wasn’t there for a pleasure cruise.” Most interpreters date the book to the 90s of the first century, a scholarly judgment rather than a detail the text supplies.
The seven churches did not share one situation, and that observation unlocks the whole book. At least one believer in Pergamum had already been killed (2:13 names him, Antipas). Smyrna and Philadelphia were suffering. Other churches, as Keener describes them, were compromising with the values of the same world system that was killing their brothers and sisters elsewhere. So Revelation speaks to two kinds of reader at once, which is why it can sound tender in one paragraph and severe in the next.
One book, two opposite diagnoses
Read the letters to Smyrna and Laodicea side by side. To Smyrna Jesus says, “I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich)” (Revelation 2:9). To Laodicea the diagnosis runs the other way: “Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked” (3:17).
Local background sharpens these lines. Laodicea was a wealthy banking city with a textile industry, so the charge of being poor and naked struck at its pride. Its water supply was notoriously bad. Hot water and cold water were both valued for drinking, while lukewarm water was considered disgusting. That is the force of the image: “So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth” (3:16). The church had become like the water its own citizens complained about.
The next lines matter just as much: “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent” (Revelation 3:19). Keener calls the passage “a gracious invitation, but also a warning.” The rebuke comes from someone who loves the church and wants to come in and eat with it (3:20).
This is what it means for Revelation to wake the comfortable. Its warnings fall mostly on congregations, not outsiders. Asked whether people should fear the book, Keener answered, “As for whether people should be scared of the book of Revelation, that kind of depends on how you’re living.” Sardis, with its reputation for being alive while dead (3:1), needed alarm. Smyrna needed assurance.
Every one of the seven letters ends with a promise to the one who overcomes. The tests differ, and Keener draws the practical point: “we don’t get to choose what our testing is gonna be.” Then, at once, “but we’re all called to overcome.”
The center of the book: a Lion announced, a Lamb seen
If Revelation has a hinge, it sits in chapter 5. John weeps because no one can open the sealed scroll. An elder tells him the Lion of the tribe of Judah has prevailed (Revelation 5:5). John looks, and what he sees is “a Lamb as it had been slain” (Revelation 5:6). He hears one thing and sees another, and the second interprets the first.
Revelation takes up the conquering lion of Genesis 49 and reinterprets it in light of Christ. As Keener puts it, “what he sees is a slain lamb. Jesus overcame by death.” The Messiah’s victory looks like defeat. That is the book’s claim about power, and every later vision depends on it.
The appeal of the alternative is obvious, and Keener names it: “the world wants to follow the beast. The beast is powerful, who wants to follow a slain lamb, but really the ultimate victory belongs with a lamb.” Revelation 12:11 describes how the Lamb’s people win: “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.”
Worship is where this contest becomes visible. The heavenly scenes contain an altar, incense, the ark and singers with harps; in Keener’s reading, “heaven is portrayed like Solomon’s temple.” The contrast is the point: “And on the earth, people are worshiping the beast. But in heaven, people are worshiping the lamb.” The throne-room scenes are not decoration between the frightening parts. They show the first readers who actually rules while Rome appears to.
What the hard images are doing
With the Lamb at the center, the beasts make more sense. The beast of Revelation 13 draws on Daniel 7, where four beasts stand for four empires beginning with Babylon. John’s beast combines features of all of them. Keener’s reading: “It looks like a blending of all four beasts together. It’s the spirit of evil empire.” Rome was the form it took in John’s day. The pattern outlasted Rome.
Revelation repeatedly pictures a name written on people. The beast’s mark appears at the end of chapter 13, and the very next verse, 14:1, shows the 144,000 standing with the Lamb with his name written on them. Keener’s conclusion: “So you either get the mark of the beast, you get the mark of the Lamb, you belong to one or the other.” The image concerns allegiance before anything else.
Babylon works the same way. Revelation 18 echoes the dirges Isaiah and Jeremiah sang over the ancient Babylon, now sung over Rome. Its cargo list in 18:12-13 runs through gold, silk, ivory, spices, wine and grain, and Keener says it closely matches what flowed into first-century Rome. Those goods did not arrive by fair exchange. In his account, Rome gathered most of them by oppressing other peoples, so the list reads as an inventory of what the provinces were made to supply. The list does not end with luxuries. It ends with “slaves, and souls of men” (18:13). Placing human beings last, as one more commodity, exposes what the whole economy rested on. Keener hears in it God’s verdict on empires that trade in people, and for readers whose history includes the slave trade, that line is not abstract.
Where do the end-times debates fit?
The future does not drop out. Revelation clearly expects the return of Christ, the judgment of evil and a new creation. Faithful Christians differ on how much of the book describes events still to come and how to read the thousand years of chapter 20.
Keener sorts the approaches. The idealist reading treats the book as timeless principles, and he grants it teaches principles: “Obviously it is giving us principles, but it’s more concrete than just that.” The historicist reading takes it as a roadmap of church history, popular in the 1800s until “church history kept going and messed up the roadmap.” A fully futurist reading struggles with Revelation 12, where the child caught up to God’s throne is Jesus, an event already past. A fully preterist reading, in which even Christ’s return has happened, is held by very few. Most evangelical scholars, he says, combine these: part past, part present, part future, with the debate over proportions.
On the millennium he traces a long history: second-century writers who expected a future thousand years and assumed they would pass through tribulation; Augustine, Luther and Calvin, who read the thousand years as the present church age; and the pre-tribulation rapture, which he dates to the 1830s through Darby and later the Scofield Reference Bible. These are his historical summaries. His own view places Christ’s single return after the tribulation, and he adds that facing tribulation is “not a scary thing,” because believers have faced persecution throughout history “and Jesus is with us no matter what.” The views differ. The posture they should produce does not.
Lisa Fields grew up with the Left Behind books and films and only later learned that Christians read Revelation in more than one way. Her conclusion is the right one: “we come to this book scared, and actually we’re supposed to come to this book with hope and with trust.”
Doesn’t this reading drain the book of its future?
The objection deserves its strongest form. Futurist interpreters point out that Revelation calls itself prophecy of “things which must shortly come to pass” (Revelation 1:1), that chapters 4 through 22 move toward a judgment and a new creation that plainly have not happened, and that the sequences of seals, trumpets and bowls look like real events in real order. On their reading, an approach that dwells on first-century Rome risks treating the visions as mere encouragement and leaving their predictions unclaimed. Some would say a blend of past, present and future is too loose to tell readers what to expect.
There is force here, and the letter-reading should concede it. The book does predict. Christ’s return, the defeat of evil and the new Jerusalem are not symbols for something else. What the text limits is precision. The images are built from Daniel, Ezekiel, Isaiah and Exodus, and the first hearers were expected to understand them, so a reading that turns each image into a coded headline only a later generation can decode outruns the evidence. The same limit runs the other way: a reading that confines everything to Rome cannot account for the book’s open-ended hope. The text firmly supports the outcome. It supports far less certainty about the sequence and the timing.
That is also why the symbols are not open to anything. A credible reading has to answer to the Old Testament background and to Revelation’s own explanations, a firmer control than matching images to current events, which every generation has done with different results.
What follows for readers now
One scene is easy to skip. In Revelation 8, the prayers of the saints rise before God with incense, and then the trumpets of judgment begin. Keener’s reading is that the tyrants of history do not drive it: “They’re just pawns.” And then: “But God hears the cries of his people, and that’s what moves history.”
That reframes the present for anyone who feels small. Christians were a tiny fraction of the Roman population in John’s day, and yet John, an exile, “has the audacity to hear this funeral dirge over Rome,” as Keener puts it. The book announces where history ends: “The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever” (Revelation 11:15). Applied to anxious news cycles, Keener’s point is simple: “all the empires in history before us lie in the dust. But God’s kingdom is still here.”
The destination is stated without symbols to decode: “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away” (Revelation 21:4). Lisa Fields names what that promise does for someone in pain: “suffering is not a period, but a comma.” Keener’s last word on the book is plainer still: “He’s gonna make things right.” Believers hold that hope and work toward such a world now, trusting God to finish it.
For the suffering, Revelation asks them to keep faith because the Lamb has already won. For the comfortable, it asks whose name they are actually wearing.
