Churches rarely protect abusers because they approve of abuse. They protect them because a chain of reasoning makes silence look like faithfulness. A true verse seems to settle the matter. A leader’s good works seem to count as evidence. Keeping the institution intact seems the same as keeping the church intact. Each of those steps fails when you examine it. Real accountability means a reporting process that exists before anyone is accused, that the accused and his allies cannot control, and that treats the person with the least power as a member of the body worth protecting.
The docuseries Surviving R. Kelly made that reasoning visible because the pattern it documented was not confined to the music industry. Dr. Monique Gadson has counseled at a church in Atlanta for sixteen years and founded Transforming Visions, which consults with churches among others. Asked by Lisa Fields how the series connected to church culture, Gadson treated the celebrity story as a mirror, not an outside scandal. What follows takes the reasoning that keeps abuse hidden and tests it one assumption at a time.
Does “God uses flawed people” settle anything?
The documentary showed a man accused of serious abuse hiding in plain sight partly by borrowing spiritual credibility: inspirational songs, gospel collaborations, pastors willing to stand with him. Fields recalled a gospel artist who defended working with him by noting that God used flawed men like Noah and Moses.
The premise of that defense is true. God did use flawed people, and Scripture is plain about it. The trouble is the conclusion it is asked to carry. From “God uses flawed people” it does not follow that a person accused of preying on young women should keep his platform, or that the accusation needs no examination. The premise concerns what God can do with a sinner. The conclusion concerns what a community owes the people that sinner may have harmed. The first question does not answer the second.
Fields named what happens when the two are blurred: “there’s this culture of protection under the guise of grace and mercy.” Her correction is that “Grace doesn’t negate you from accountability,” and she drew out the consequence bluntly. A person can be told God still has grace for him, and “that grace could still be there for you in prison.”
Why does a true verse end up silencing a survivor?
Gadson calls the most common version of this move spiritual bypass. When something painful surfaces, the church reaches for a spiritual statement and treats the matter as handled. God will take care of you. Greater is he that is in you. The spiritual response skips everything else that is going on: the emotional damage, the psychological harm, even practical obligations. If someone stole money, she points out, prayer does not cancel the debt.
She does not dismiss the verses. Of the familiar line from 1 John 4:4, she says: “And this is true, and this is scripture, and this is the word of God.” Her objection is to what the statement is being used to do. A true sentence can work as a door closer, ending the inquiry before anyone asks what happened, who was hurt, or what the person who caused harm can still do.
The passage itself cuts against that use. First John 4 opens with a command: “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1). The assurance in verse 4 belongs to a passage about testing religious claims, not suspending judgment about them.
The bypass, in Gadson’s account, has two effects. First, “it ends up keeping the person who is the alleged perpetrator in a position where he or she can continue to do this.” Second, the victim’s voice is silenced. What it really protects is the arrangement: “Because then it almost becomes the preservation, if you will, of the system as opposed to listening to the voices of the individual.”
Her counseling work adds a further cost. Survivors tell her they do not want to go back to church, often because they are expected to arrive with hands raised and spiritual language ready, and if they cannot, they are seen as less faithful. For someone already wounded, she says, “it’s like a revictimization of the victim.” The bypass protects the accused and turns the survivor’s pain into evidence against her own faith.
Does a leader’s good work count as evidence of innocence?
This inference does the most damage, so state it at full strength. A pastor has fed the hungry, visited families in jail, baptized half the children in the congregation and saved marriages. Someone with little standing accuses him. Surely a lifetime of visible goodness makes the accusation less likely?
Fields points out what that argument assumes. Some leaders, she says, know how to manipulate the system and do enough good to mask the bad so that no one will believe an accuser. If that is possible, public good works cannot sort the innocent from the guilty. A leader who does good and no harm will have a record of good works. So will a leader who does good, also does harm, and depends on the good to cover himself. Evidence that both possibilities predict equally cannot decide between them. It tells you a great deal about a man’s gifts and very little about what happened behind a closed door.
Beneath the error, Fields sees a theological one: treating leaders as more than dust. Anyone can change thousands of lives for the better while destroying a few at the same time. She also refuses the arithmetic that weighs the many helped against the few harmed, pointing to the shepherd who leaves the ninety-nine to find the one lost sheep (Luke 15:4).
Gadson brings the same point to a familiar text: “Ye shall know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:16). Christians often treat fruit as whatever good is visible. Her illustration complicates that. A moldy mandarin at the bottom of a bag is easy to spot, but a bag that looks fine can still hold fruit that tastes bad, and you only learn that when you peel it. Judging by fruit is examination, not a glance at the outside.
Is protecting the institution the same as protecting the church?
Here is the premise people overlook. Much institutional silence rests on an unspoken equation: whatever threatens the institution threatens the church, so defending one defends the other. Accept that equation, and hiding an accusation can feel like loyalty to God.
Gadson tests it against Esther. The king, “when the heart of the king was merry with wine” (Esther 1:10), summoned Queen Vashti to display her before his guests. She refused. His advisers framed her refusal as a threat to order across the empire, and the decree that followed aimed “that every man should bear rule in his own house” (Esther 1:22). What Gadson notices is the question nobody asked: “not once did anybody say, Hey, you were drunk.” Instead, the counsel was “let’s just get her out and let’s just bring somebody in that can preserve this system.”
Esther is narrative. It describes this court rather than commanding anyone to imitate it, and Gadson is open that she reads the scene through her training as a systems thinker. Her point is a pattern the passage lets us see: a community facing an uncomfortable fact about its most powerful man solves the problem by removing the person who raised it.
Fields adds why the pattern holds. The people who booked travel for the young women around R. Kelly would have seen their dates of birth, and many stayed quiet to protect income, access or family. Churches feel the same pressure. If a popular leader falls, the ministry’s finances may fall with him. Her answer is to widen the circle of obligation: in the body of Christ, the family a believer must protect includes the brothers and sisters the system is willing to sacrifice. It also implicates ordinary members, since some never challenge a leader because their own lives would not survive scrutiny either.
Gadson does not oppose systems. She builds them. Explaining why even a longtime Sunday school teacher needs a background check, she says: “We are trying to protect the children within the system.” That marks the real distinction. A system can be protected for the sake of its people, or people can be sacrificed to keep the system as it is. She expects resistance whenever a change threatens the second: “the tension is always going to be to keep that system as it is.”
Fields also takes on the phrase most often used to put leaders beyond question. Reverence for titles, in her view, grew in Black churches partly because they gave people dignity a white supremacist society denied them. That history explains the reverence without making it biblical. “Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm” (Psalm 105:15) recalls God protecting the patriarchs among the nations. David’s refusal to harm Saul as “the LORD’s anointed” (1 Samuel 24:6) was a refusal to kill him. Some Christians do read these texts as a broader call to deference toward leaders, but neither passage forbids examining a leader’s conduct. When David himself sinned, God sent a prophet to his face: “And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man” (2 Samuel 12:7). Fields’s conclusion is that leaders who violate people forfeit any such protection.
What about false accusations?
The strongest objection is fair. Accusations can be false, and a church that removed leaders on any complaint would be unjust in its own way. Fields grants it directly: “I know that every allegation isn’t true.”
So the question is what follows from the possibility of error. If some accusations are false, a church needs a way to find out which ones are true. It does not follow that accusations should be dismissed, and certainly not that the accused’s reputation should be the deciding evidence. Automatic dismissal and quiet management share the same defect: neither investigates anything. The objection actually strengthens the case for real process. A church that keeps records and separates reporting from the accused’s circle is better placed to clear the falsely accused than one relying on loyalty and impressions.
The sources leave an honest gap. Gadson and Fields describe what churches must stop doing and what structures they need, but not how to weigh conflicting testimony or what standard of evidence should lead to removal. Gadson’s repeated advice to bring in consultants and trained professionals partly concedes that this work exceeds what most pastors are trained for, a limit she says drew her into counseling in the first place.
What does accountability actually require?
Gadson’s proposals each answer a failure traced above. A church needs a process before anyone discloses anything, so a counselor or member who hears a report knows where it goes. It needs reporting routes where other members of the system “won’t get the message and extinguish the message or silence the message.” It needs centralized records, so a pattern shows even when each report looks minor alone, along with screening for anyone who works with children, youth or elders, and leadership training on spiritual abuse and spiritual bypass. Fields adds that young people should learn that respecting a pastor has a limit where they can say no, and that congregations should judge preachers by character in private and public rather than by how they make people feel.
Fields also observes that “usually those who become villains at one time were victims.” Silence fails twice: it abandons those being harmed and spares the person causing harm the confrontation repentance requires.
Many churches assume that saying nothing keeps them out of the question. Gadson rejects that: “if we are not ready with a response, then that lack of response is a response.” For churches that feel overwhelmed, her counsel is practical: “if you can’t do everything that you want to do, do something, start somewhere.”
The failures of leaders are real and grievous, and they are not the same as the failure of Christ. That distinction cuts both ways. A survivor does not have to give up on Jesus because his representatives failed her. And a church cannot defend Christ by defending a man. The hidden premise behind so much institutional silence is that the leader’s reputation and the church’s witness rise and fall together. Remove it, and Christ needs no cover-up. The people he left the ninety-nine to find need the truth told.
If you have experienced abuse, you deserve safety and real people walking with you. When a child is at risk or a crime has been committed, report it to law enforcement or child protective services rather than leaving it to a church to handle internally. Quick answers
If our church has a counselor on staff, is the problem handled?
Not by itself. Gadson welcomes counselors and partnerships with clinicians, but warns a church can still perpetuate harm if survivors’ experiences never shape how the whole congregation talks and acts.
Can something as ordinary as a fellowship hug be a warning sign?
Gadson describes members reporting hugs that are too tight, too long, or that let hands drift. She suggests asking permission before hugging, since no one knows what trauma others carry.
Does this only apply to pastors?
No. Gadson stresses the same blind spot can protect a well-loved lay member or longtime volunteer who has done visible good.
What can adults do before anything is reported?
Many young women in the documentary said they had been naive. Gadson asks whether older adults step in when they see a grown man giving a young girl inappropriate attention, and calls churches to teach youth healthy Christian language about sex and how predators target them.
