You can stay in a predominantly white church that does not see you, and you can stay well, but it takes more than endurance. Latasha Morrison, founder and CEO of Be the Bridge and author of Brown Faces, White Spaces, has spent years on predominantly white church staffs. Her counsel comes down to this: have people who believe you, give the situation a time limit, check whether the pastor actually holds a conviction about oneness, and when it is time to go, leave without calling it failure. Staying can be faithful. Leaving can be faithful. Drifting until you are worn out is the outcome to avoid.
That answer sounds simple. Each piece of it rests on a distinction that most people in this position have not had the room to make.
What Does It Actually Mean That a Church Doesn’t See You?
Morrison tells about a set of roundtable discussions she ran while on staff at a church in Austin. She brought in African American, Latine and Asian members who had been part of the congregation for five or seven years. They volunteered. Their kids attended. Her rule for the staff was that they had to listen and could not ask questions in the moment. The result, in her words: “it was a surprise to the staff of how many racialized incidents that these members had experience. They had no idea.”
One story makes the problem concrete. During a service, the congregation was told to connect with someone who did not look like them. A woman who was pregnant, married, wearing her ring and a college T-shirt, and who holds a doctorate, was welcomed to the church by the person beside her. She had been a member for seven years. The person then offered her resources for unwed mothers. Morrison’s summary is blunt: “the eyes saw a pregnant black woman” and filled in the rest.
The story points to structural blindness. The leaders believed they were fulfilling their mission because they were mostly hearing from one group. Morrison names the danger as leaders “only asking one person, that’s maybe close to you.” For someone deciding whether to stay, this changes what you are waiting for. The question is whether people who have never been asked will start asking, and whether they will listen when they do.
Morrison’s explanation for why the church can be worse at this than other settings is that “most white people live homogenous lives,” so the only picture some people carry is what they have seen on television or been told. Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, recalled finding more of these assumptions in conservative evangelical circles than she had met at a secular university or at work, and her verdict was “this is very much cultural ignorance.”
Why Start With People Who Believe You?
When Fields asked what she would say to a person of color in a white space right now, Morrison began with community. She told listeners to make sure they have “a strong community of people that believe you when you say something.” Later in the same answer she called this the most important thing: “finding a community that you can talk with, that you can share with, that you can pray with, that understands that you don’t have to do a whole bunch of explaining.”
A person who is the only one, or one of a few, in a congregation often carries two burdens at once. There is the incident itself, and then there is the work of proving the incident happened and meant what you think it meant. If every conversation about your experience begins with a defense of your own perception, you will run out of strength before you reach the real question of what to do. Morrison wrote Brown Faces, White Spaces with this in view. She said, “I wanted to let brown people know that you’re not alone,” and added that their experience may differ from everyone else’s but “that you’re not crazy.”
Scripture asks the church for exactly this kind of hearing. In a chapter of practical instruction about love among believers, Paul writes:
“Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.” (Romans 12:15)
Paul gives it as an instruction to the congregation. Morrison describes what happens when a congregation fails at it: “If I’m saying I’m hurting, why can’t you listen?” and then, “Why are you gonna deny and defend and deflect when I’m saying I’m hurting?” People who believe you are carrying out the obedience Romans 12 asks for, even when the congregation around you is not.
Morrison does not spell out where this community should be, but her own description of Be the Bridge suggests an answer. She calls it a place where people find others who share their experience, are seen, talk about what is happening at their jobs, and get people in their groups to pray for them. The implication, drawn from that description, is that your circle of trust should not live entirely inside the congregation you are evaluating. If the only people who can confirm your experience are the ones who did not see it, you have no outside reference point.
How Long Should You Keep Trying?
This is the most practical thing Morrison says, and it comes from her own life: “I gave it a timeframe. I said, if I’m having these same conversations in three years, then this is not the space for me.”
Three years was her number. Nothing in her counsel makes it a rule for everyone, and nothing in Scripture assigns a waiting period to church membership. The value is in having a limit at all. Without one, two things tend to happen. Some people leave at the first hard conversation, which never gives anything real a chance to grow. Others stay indefinitely, having the same conversations, and treat their own exhaustion as the price of faithfulness. A timeframe makes you name in advance what change you are hoping for and how long you will give it.
Morrison’s reason for the limit is theological: “you can only help change or transform people that wanna be helped and transform.” She follows it by saying that changing hearts is “the job of the Holy Spirit.” That fits Jesus’s teaching in John 16:8, where he says the Spirit will convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgment. You are responsible for speaking honestly and loving people well. Producing conviction in someone else belongs to God. Morrison’s application: “set a time limit where you’re not putting that burden on yourself.”
She also tells people to “have the conversations” before the limit runs out. The timeframe is a season of honest effort with an agreed end point, so that when you look up, you can tell slow progress from no progress at all.
What Are You Getting Out of Being the Only One?
Morrison asks a question that is uncomfortable on purpose. She tells people to examine themselves and ask what they are getting out of the situation, “Because sometimes we get something out of being the only one and being that only voice, and we’re there and we’re taking up space.” Her concern is the case where no fruit or change comes from it.
The question guards against a quiet trap. Being the one voice in the room can carry standing. You become the person leaders consult, the face on the stage, the proof that the church is diverse. Morrison is sharp about churches that hire “just for the sake of diversity, but not for reconciliation,” and about pastors who put a few people of color at the doors or on the stage and feel no need to care further. If you hold one of those roles, ask whether your presence is helping the church change or helping it feel as if it already has.
She pairs this with a related point: “every person is not called to be a bridge like that.” In her view all believers are bridge builders in the broad sense, because the gospel is what connects us. Staying inside a resistant institution to push for change is a specific calling some people have and others do not. She tells listeners to “understand your assignment.” Being able to tolerate a space does not obligate you to stay in it.
She also tells people to take care of themselves and their families and to make sure they have not turned the space into an idol. A congregation is the people of God gathered. When belonging to one particular church becomes the thing you cannot imagine losing, it has taken a place that belongs to God.
Does the Pastor Change the Answer?
Morrison gives one test that cuts through a lot of uncertainty. “If the pastor doesn’t have that conviction, then I know for me personally, that’s not a space for me,” she says of a conviction about oneness, because “the organization is gonna follow the head.”
Individual members will say clumsy or hurtful things in any church. Whether those moments lead anywhere depends on whether leadership treats them as a problem to address. Morrison contrasts pastors who stop caring because attendance and giving are steady with pastors who are convicted and start asking what conversations they need to have. A leader who wants to know is a reason for hope. A leader who treats the subject as a distraction tells you how your timeframe is likely to end.
Isn’t Leaving a Failure of Christian Unity?
This is the strongest objection, and it deserves a real answer. Jesus prayed for his followers:
“That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.” (John 17:21)
If Christians of different backgrounds keep walking away from each other, does that work against what Jesus asked for?
Read the prayer closely. Jesus prays for the oneness of all who believe, a unity grounded in the Father and the Son. He says nothing about membership in a particular congregation, and nothing in the prayer suggests one believer must absorb ongoing harm so that a single local church can count as diverse. Morrison’s test points the same way: the pastor’s conviction about oneness is what she looks for. A congregation where some members go unseen and unheard displays an arrangement that only looks unified from one side.
Paul describes the body this way:
“And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.” (1 Corinthians 12:26)
Morrison makes the same point when she says that what impacts one in the body impacts the other. If you leave one congregation and join another, you remain in the body of Christ. If you stay and are never seen, the body is already failing to do what Paul describes.
The objection still carries a real warning. Morrison’s counsel is no license to leave whenever church becomes uncomfortable. She speaks of having the conversations, giving it time, and examining yourself. Leaving well means leaving after honest effort, for reasons you can name. Her counsel is also wisdom from experience, not a rule that settles every case. You still have to weigh your own church, your own calling and the counsel of people who know you.
Within those limits, she refuses to rank the choices. Some people stay to build bridges or push for change. Some decide they cannot take it anymore and need to go. “And that too is liberating,” she says. What matters is that the decision is actually made: “as long as you’re making that choice, that is your liberation.” She ends her advice with the same freedom: “just know when to leave and you’ll know and don’t be fearful of that.”
Morrison’s roundtables worked because leaders finally asked a question they had been answering by default. The same move is open to the person in the pew. Name the change you are hoping for, give it a season, find out whether the pastor wants to hear it, and let the outcome of that season make the decision instead of your exhaustion.
