Black Hebrew Israelites teach that the people they call “so-called African Americans” are the true blood descendants of the biblical Israelites. Taken alone, that is a historical claim about ancestry. Vocab Malone, who has written a primer on the movement, considers it weak history but not heresy. The real departures from Christianity sit in what the most visible camps build on top of it: a Jesus who is no longer fully God, a cross stripped of its saving work, repentance redefined as law-keeping, and a ranking of nations by bloodline.
Most arguments with the movement go wrong because they treat those layers as one thing. One kind of Christian hears “we are Israel” and reaches for ridicule, as if ancestry were the heresy. Another hears a moving account of stolen history and misses the theology riding along with it. Malone’s work keeps the layers apart, and that separation explains both what is wrong with the movement and why it lands where it does.
Which Hebrew Israelites Are We Talking About?
The movement prefers the name Hebrew Israelites. The longer label survives because outsiders recognize it, and Malone notes that some of the movement’s own leaders used it themselves in earlier decades. Under the shared identity claim, the groups differ widely. Some accept only the Hebrew Scriptures. Some accept the New Testament and Jesus as Messiah. Malone concentrates on the camps that descend, by history or by ideas, from a Harlem school associated with One West 125th Street, because those are the groups people actually meet on sidewalks and social media. Everything below about deity, hierarchy and law-keeping describes those camps. A relative in another group may believe something quite different.
Why Isn’t the Identity Claim Itself the Heresy?
Malone draws this line deliberately. Christians have reason to dispute the bloodline thesis, he says, but the thesis “in and of itself, although historically dubious, is not enough to go over into unorthodoxy or heresy.” That is a strong historical judgment held together with theological restraint. He thinks the claim is probably wrong. He does not think being wrong about it puts someone outside the faith.
The restraint makes sense. Where a people descended from is a question for genealogy, migration history and documents. It can stay contested without touching the creeds. A person could be mistaken about their ancestry and still confess that Jesus is Lord, or right about it and still deny him. Paul’s statement settles what ancestry can and cannot do:
“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28)
Paul does not erase ethnicity. He removes it as the measure of a person’s standing before God. The Jude 3 Project keeps the same order when it says that before we are Black, we are Christian. A Christian therefore does not need to win the ancestry debate to answer the movement.
That has a practical consequence. The Christian who opens by mocking a man’s sense of his own people has picked the wrong fight. He has made a historical dispute carry a theological load it cannot bear, and he has told the man he does not take his history seriously.
Where Does the Movement Actually Leave the Christian Faith?
The break happens in the cluster of beliefs that, in Malone’s experience, nearly always comes with the thesis. He says he has hardly met anyone in these camps who is not heretical on key issues, and he starts with the most basic one: “The deity of Christ denigrated. He’s no longer fully God.”
The rest follows in sequence. In Malone’s summary, the cross is reduced to Christ doing away with the law of sacrifice. The new covenant is pushed aside, with the claim that believers are not even in it. Paul’s leveling statement is reversed. Malone puts it bluntly: “the equality at the foot of the cross, Galatians 3:28 taken away.” In its place comes what the camps call protocol. Non-Israelites either cannot enter the kingdom at all or must stay in their place under someone from the tribe of Judah, teaching only other non-Israelites.
Repentance changes meaning too. According to Malone, repentance on the street means waking up to your true nationality and heritage and then keeping the law, the statutes and the commandments. “That’s not biblical repentance, but that’s what they preach on the streets in essence.” The demands he lists concern appearance and behavior: take off your cross, grow your beard, break up with your white girlfriend. Bowing the knee to Jesus is missing from the list.
These disagreements reach the center of the faith. John opens his Gospel this way:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1)
Then he says, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us” (John 1:14). A message that lowers Christ below that confession, empties the cross, and makes law-keeping the road back to God is preaching a different gospel, whatever it gets right about history.
How Does Ancestry Turn Into a Hierarchy?
Once ancestry decides standing before God, someone has to sit at the bottom. Malone explains that One West eschatology includes perpetual slavery through reincarnation. A white person enslaved in the coming kingdom who dies is reborn white and enslaved again. When Malone asked whether anyone could cross from one group to another, the answer was no. “So it’s like a racial caste system in their reincarnation schema.” He adds that hostility toward Arabs runs strong in the movement and draws far less public attention than its hostility toward white people.
One proof text is Revelation 13:9–10, which says that whoever leads into captivity will go into captivity, and whoever kills with the sword will be killed with the sword. Malone reads it in its chapter. Revelation 13 describes the beast persecuting the saints, and the verse closes by calling for the patience and faith of the saints. It prepares believers to endure. It does not promise racial payback. He also points out a logical trap: if leading others into captivity guarantees your own, a movement that plans to enslave other nations has signed itself up for the same fate, and the cycle never stops.
Malone’s sharpest judgment concerns ordinary life. He says plainly that “it teaches you to hate your neighbor,” and that it breaks families. He bases that on testimonies from real people, including a single father left to handle custody after the mother of his children joined the movement.
Does Deuteronomy 28 Really Describe the Slave Trade?
The identity claim and the theology meet in one chapter. Deuteronomy 28 sets out blessings for keeping the covenant and curses for breaking it, and the movement reads the curses as prophecy of the transatlantic slave trade. Malone says the whole chapter matters to their view of history, but verse 68 is the center:
“And the LORD shall bring thee into Egypt again with ships, by the way whereof I spake unto thee, Thou shalt see it no more again: and there ye shall be sold unto your enemies for bondmen and bondwomen, and no man shall buy you.” (Deuteronomy 28:68)
The movement’s case deserves a fair statement. The verse names ships. It names a people sold into bondage. The chapter around it describes a scattered people under foreign oppression, losing their children and their land. For readers whose ancestors crossed the Atlantic in chains, those lines can read like a description of their own history, and a reading that turns inherited suffering into evidence of chosen identity carries real emotional force. The movement has also refined its argument. Malone says teachers once matched each curse to an event, and more recently have argued that the curses are perpetual and that not every curse appears in every episode. That revision answers objections built on missing details.
The text itself pushes back in several places. The verse says “again,” which assumes a return to a place the people had already been. Egypt appears literally elsewhere in the chapter, so reading it here as a figure for America requires a switch of meaning midway through. The curses include the king going into exile with the people (Deuteronomy 28:36) and enemies besieging fortified cities, details that match the invasions recorded in Scripture far better than the Atlantic trade.
Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, adds a covenant reading. Israel left Egypt the first time on dry ground through the parted sea, and the curse sends them back on ships, a picture of how far God has withdrawn. Malone calls it the “undoing of the exodus.” Fields also notes that the final clause says no one will buy them, while slaveholders in the Americas were eager buyers. Malone reports the movement’s reply, that buy means redeem, and he rejects it because the verse plainly describes sale into slavery.
The limits run both ways. Malone says sources outside the Bible hint at times in Israel’s history when verse 68 was partly fulfilled, including periods when Hebrew slaves were very cheap and deportations by ship. Those are his assertions about ancient records, and he presents them as hints. He openly calls verse 68 harder to place than other verses in the chapter, which is why he tells Christians to ask questions of the text instead of trading obscure sources. The interpretation offered here is the reading Malone and Fields argue for. What the chapter does establish is narrower than either side sometimes wants: it pronounces covenant curses on Israel. It cannot, by itself, identify anyone’s ancestors today.
Fields presses the point back on the church. Christians who claim verses 1–14 as personal promises while ignoring the curses have already conceded the method. In her words, “if we are using the text incorrectly, we don’t have a leg to stand on when engaging Hebrew Israelites.”
Why Does the Curse Reading Carry So Much Weight?
The Deuteronomy reading supplies something many people have never been given: an explanation for centuries of suffering that comes from the Bible itself. Malone tracks how far that explanation has traveled. His book devotes a chapter to Deuteronomy 28 and Kendrick Lamar, and he recounts that Rolling Stone, in August 2017, asked Lamar about his cousin Carl, a member of the movement, and about the idea that Black people are cursed under Deuteronomy. Malone also relays Carl’s own account that the Deuteronomy 28 teaching was what won over Lamar’s circle. When a mainstream magazine asks a celebrated artist about a curse in Deuteronomy, the reading has left the street corner.
Malone refuses to treat the appeal as a joke. “This does touch upon a real sense of a loss of dignity and identity.” He calls the movement an overreaction to real hurt, an attempt to get back what only the gospel can restore, and he names the gospel together with its implications, including social ones, beginning in the church.
The appeal also has a face. Malone relays the account of a man who joined after teachers visited his house. He had little respect for the Bible. What moved him was seeing strong men who looked like him, dressed like him, and answered every question in a way no pastor ever had. Malone compares the best of these teachers to musicians: “it’s almost like watching jazz musicians.” And “to someone who has never seen someone handle the scriptures like that, it can be dazzling.”
The church’s own record feeds that contrast. Fields tells of a young man in Virginia Beach who brought his pastor a written list of the questions he was hearing. The pastor promised to get back to him and never did. The young man read the silence as proof the church had no answers and left, and his girlfriend, who had been strong in church, went with him.
Malone sees the gap in the resources too. He notes that older editions of a standard Christian reference on cults carried a chapter on the Nation of Islam and newer editions dropped it, leaving Christians to piece together material on movements like this one. He also judges that the Nation of Islam, influential well beyond its size, is now in decline while Hebrew Israelism is rising. His warning to leaders is direct: “you gotta empower them and equip them or you’re gonna lose them anyway to stuff like this.”
Wounds explain much of the draw, but Malone insists they do not explain all of it. “There are aspects of this belief that are so vile that they simply attract people who have a blood lust.” He describes one camp that teaches men may take girls at will in the coming kingdom once they reach puberty, and several camps that teach polygamy, one calling women who refuse it filthy. Other groups reject these teachings, he notes, and some moderates are reluctant to denounce them publicly. The heaviest cost, in his experience, falls on the women tied to these men, including second and third wives with no protection and, in one case, a fifty-year marriage.

What Changes Once the Layers Come Apart?
Ancestry becomes a question that can be argued with evidence and humility, without staking the faith on it. The deity of Christ, the cross and grace become the line that cannot move. The hierarchy stands exposed as a reversal of Galatians 3:28, teaching people to despise the neighbors Christ died for.
The church’s assignment becomes clearer too. The hurt Malone describes is real, and a better comeback will not heal a stolen sense of dignity. Congregations that teach people to read whole chapters, answer the lists of questions people bring them, and live out the social implications of the gospel can. Malone is confident the truth of the gospel sits with the Christian. His worry is that the movement’s teachers have often handled the Bible with more visible skill than the people who confess its Lord.
