Manipulation by a church leader is not the same as a hard word from a demanding one. Scripture gives a way to tell them apart. A true shepherd in the Bible knows the sheep by name, feeds them, lays down his life for them, and remembers they belong to God. A manipulative leader does the reverse. He feeds on the flock, rules by force, and treats people as his property. If your leader’s authority worked mainly to shrink you, silence you and bind you to him, Scripture has a name for it, and it is not discipleship.
Cornelius Lindsey, a pastor in Atlanta, knows this from the inside. In a conversation with Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, he described years under a leader he called “Dr. Pastor Dad.” That experience, read against the Bible’s own portraits of good and bad shepherds, gives a sturdier test than a gut feeling. The test matters because manipulation, when it works, persuades you that your gut is the problem.
What Did Jesus Say a Shepherd Does, and Who Was He Talking To?
The best-known shepherd passage in the Bible, John 10, is easy to read as a gentle pastoral picture cut loose from its setting. It is not loose. It follows directly on John 9, where Jesus heals a man born blind. The religious leaders question the man, insult him, and finally expel him. John 9:34 records their verdict: “Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.” Jesus then goes and finds the man himself.
So when Jesus begins to speak of shepherds, thieves and hirelings, his audience includes the very leaders who had just used religious authority to shame a vulnerable man and push him out. John 10 is, in its historical setting, a verdict on that kind of leadership. Applying it to a pastor today is application, not the passage’s first meaning. But it is a fair application, because the pattern Jesus confronts is the same: power over people used to protect the leader rather than the sheep.
Look at what the good shepherd does in the chapter:
“He calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.” (John 10:3)
He gives his life for the sheep (John 10:11). The hireling, by contrast, “careth not for the sheep” (John 10:13). And the thief comes “for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy” (John 10:10). The contrast is not between a strict shepherd and a soft one. It is between a shepherd whose care runs toward the sheep and a figure whose use of the sheep runs toward himself.
Set Lindsey’s story next to John 10:3. Someone in a room once asked his name. Before he could finish, his leader spoke over him in front of everyone. Lindsey recalls the words: “you’re a statue. You don’t talk. You’re not, you’re nobody.” The good shepherd calls his sheep by name. This leader took a man’s name from him in public. That is not a small difference in style. It is the exact inversion of what Jesus says a shepherd is for.
What Did the Prophets Say About Leaders Who Rule by Force?
Jesus did not invent the shepherd image. He drew on a long prophetic tradition, and Ezekiel 34 is its sharpest form. The chapter is addressed to Israel’s rulers, the kings and officials who governed God’s people, not to pastors in our sense. Still, it shows how God evaluates anyone entrusted with his flock.
The charge opens plainly: “Woe be to the shepherds of Israel that do feed themselves!” (Ezekiel 34:2). The leaders had not strengthened the weak, healed the sick or sought the lost. Ezekiel 34:4 ends with the summary of what they did instead:
“But with force and with cruelty have ye ruled them.” (Ezekiel 34:4)
God’s response, through the rest of the chapter, is that he will hold those shepherds accountable and come to search out his own sheep himself.
Two things stand out. First, the failure Ezekiel names is not mainly bad doctrine. It is a leader turning the flock into a resource for his own appetite. Second, God calls the flock “my flock.” The shepherds were never owners. That point returns again and again in Scripture, and it turns out to be the hinge of the whole question.
Lindsey remembers asking his leader why he was so harsh, and the answer: “I have to break you down in order to build you back up.” Another time, when Lindsey said he felt treated like a dog, the leader agreed. Lindsey recalls: “You are my dog. When I say, roll over, you roll over. When I say fetch, you fetch.” Read against Ezekiel 34:4, that is a leader describing rule by force and calling it training. The words even make the ownership claim out loud.
Isn’t a Demanding Leader Just Discipling Me?
This is the strongest objection, and it deserves a real answer. Scripture does call believers to honor and submit to leaders:
“Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account.” (Hebrews 13:17)
Correction is part of the Christian life, and a good leader will sometimes say what you do not want to hear. Not every painful conversation is manipulation.
But read the reason Hebrews gives. Submission is grounded in what the leader is doing: watching for your souls, and doing it as someone who will answer to God. The verse assumes a leader oriented toward the good of the people. It does not hand anyone unlimited command. And 1 Peter 5:3 tells elders to lead “neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.” Jesus says the same about the way rulers of the nations exercise lordship: “But so shall it not be among you” (Mark 10:43).
So the line between hard leadership and manipulation is not about volume or strictness. It is about direction. Does the correction aim at your growth and leave you more able to follow Christ? Or does it aim at your compliance and leave you more dependent on the leader? A demanding mentor wants you to stand on your own before God. A manipulator needs you never to.
Lindsey offers a practical test that fits this. He describes calling a spiritual father who had promised help and then gone silent. The conversation revealed busyness, not malice, and the relationship held. His conclusion: “And if you’re in a situation where you can’t talk to your leader in a healthy manner, then that is a good red flag.” A leader who can be told he hurt you, and can hear it, is behaving like someone who watches for souls. A leader who punishes the question is protecting something else.
That test has a limit worth naming. A direct conversation fits a repairable hurt with a leader you can safely approach. It does not fit abuse. Lindsey mentions that, after leaving that first situation, some leaders he asked for help wanted money, some wanted his voice, and some wanted sex. Sexual pressure, threats or any crime is not a matter for a private talk. If that is your situation, get to safety, tell someone you trust outside the leader’s circle, and involve the proper authorities.

If God Is Still Using This Leader, Can He Really Be Wrong?
Many people stay under a manipulative leader because the ministry visibly works. People are moved, the preaching is strong, something real seems to happen. Fields named the confusion directly: many young ministers follow leaders into harm because they see God still using them, and “they mistake God’s use for God’s approval.”
Fields points to Saul. In 1 Samuel 19, after God has already rejected Saul as king, Saul pursues David to kill him. When Saul arrives where David is sheltering, the Spirit of God comes on him and he prophesies (1 Samuel 19:23–24), and David is able to escape. Fields reads the scene this way: “So God is using his spirit on Saul, not as approval of him, but just to protect the one he has approved.” The text itself does not state God’s purpose, so this is her interpretation. It is a reasonable one, since the narrative’s outcome is David’s protection. And the plain point of the passage needs no interpretation at all: a man under God’s judgment can still show the outward signs of the Spirit’s activity.
Lindsey adds a related pattern. He describes leaders using the Elijah and Elisha story as a bargaining chip, saying in effect that “if you want the anointing that I have, then you gotta adhere to what I want.” It is worth reading 2 Kings 2 closely here. When Elisha asks for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit, Elijah calls it a hard thing and says it will happen only if Elisha sees him taken away (2 Kings 2:9–10). Elijah does not claim to hand out the Spirit as a reward for loyalty. The outcome rests with God. Any leader who presents the anointing as his to dispense on condition of obedience to him is claiming more than Elijah did.
Jesus warned that some will point to prophecy and mighty works done in his name and still be rejected (Matthew 7:22–23). Just before that, he gave the measure: “Ye shall know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:16). Spiritual power is not the test. Character is.
Whose People Are They?
This question may be the clearest single diagnostic Scripture offers. Peter tells elders to “feed the flock of God which is among you” (1 Peter 5:2), and reminds them that “the chief Shepherd” will appear (1 Peter 5:4). Paul tells the Ephesian elders to feed “the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood” (Acts 20:28). Every human shepherd in the New Testament is a steward of someone else’s flock.
Lindsey says this to other pastors who accuse him of taking their members: “There’s only one true shepherd. I’m an under shepherd. You’re an under shepherd.” He goes on to say the people “belong to the Lord.” That is not a slogan. It is the plain teaching of 1 Peter 5 put in ordinary language, and it explains why manipulation is a theological problem and not only a personality problem. Hoarding people, threatening to withhold a blessing if they leave, treating departure as betrayal: each one acts out a claim of ownership that no pastor has.
Lindsey also describes how he now thinks of the younger leaders he mentors: “my kids don’t really have anything to offer me, but I have everything to really offer them.” Paul says nearly the same thing to the Corinthians:
“For I seek not yours, but you: for the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children.” (2 Corinthians 12:14)
Spiritual fatherhood, where it is real, flows downward. When the relationship mostly flows up to the leader, in labor, money, loyalty or silence, the family language is covering something else.
Where Does Honor End?
Lindsey insists that honoring leaders is biblical, and he grounds honor in God’s glory. He reflects on the command “Honour thy father and thy mother” (Exodus 20:12) as a call to leave a good name for them, and then applies the same logic to God. So the limit follows: “whenever instructions are given that takes away true honor from God and takes away true glory from God, then that in line is a problem.”
This matches the clearest biblical example of refusing a religious authority. When the council in Jerusalem ordered the apostles to stop preaching, Peter answered, “We ought to obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29). Notice how narrow and how serious that line is. Peter was not refusing an instruction he disliked. He was refusing one that required disobeying God. Lindsey’s version is similar in practice: say you will not take part, accept the cost, and do not turn the conflict into a public campaign. “If you have to fire me because of it, you fire me.”
Lindsey also notes something about the leaders he served: “I realize that they spent most of their time by themselves.” Scripture assumes leaders who answer to God and to others. Leaders without anyone able to tell them no are more likely to start ruling like Ezekiel’s shepherds. Fields adds that manipulation often does not begin as a plan: “usually it’s gradual.” A leader notices that respect makes people compliant and slowly learns to use it. That is one more reason the test has to be the pattern of the relationship, not the leader’s stated intentions.
How Do You Keep Your Identity in God Once You Can Name It?
Lindsey’s first safeguard comes before any of this: “if you don’t know who you are before you get connected to somebody else, you’ll begin to idolize the person.” That is the inner side of the ownership problem. A leader who claims you as his property needs someone willing to accept that claim. A person who knows they belong to the chief Shepherd has a place to stand.
He also urges serving God and not the man or woman in charge, and keeping people close who can see what you cannot. His older sister told him repeatedly that the relationship was not healthy. He did not listen, and later wished he had. Back then he would go home, look in a mirror, and repeat “I am somebody” through tears. Scripture’s answer to that need is John 10:3. The one who actually owns the sheep calls each by name.
Healing took Lindsey years. He says he needed counseling, swore off church leaders for a long time, and only recently found leaders he could trust and submit to. Seeking that kind of help is not a failure of faith. His counsel to the wounded is that “a couple bad people who hurt you does not represent everybody,” and that recovery “is a process, it’s a process of healing.” He also says that if you are angry at God, God already knows and can handle it.
Quick Answers
How can I tell manipulation from strong leadership? Ask which way the relationship flows. Biblical shepherds feed, protect and seek the good of the flock (Ezekiel 34; John 10). Manipulation uses people for the leader’s benefit and makes them more dependent on him.
Doesn’t Hebrews 13:17 tell me to obey my leaders? Yes, and it grounds that obedience in leaders who watch for your souls and answer to God. It does not authorize lording over people, which 1 Peter 5:3 forbids, or obeying a person over God (Acts 5:29).
My leader is clearly anointed. Doesn’t that prove he’s right? No. Saul prophesied after God rejected him (1 Samuel 19:23–24), and Jesus said people would be known by their fruit. As Fields puts it, God’s use is not God’s approval.
Should I just talk to my leader about it? For a hurt that can be repaired, Lindsey recommends a direct, honest conversation, and he treats a leader you cannot talk to as a warning sign. If there is abuse, sexual pressure, threats or a crime, skip the private talk and get outside help.
Do I have to give up on church leaders now? Lindsey did for years and does not recommend staying there. Faithful under-shepherds exist, and finding them usually comes after real healing, not before.
The deepest problem with spiritual manipulation is not that a leader was harsh. It is that he took for himself what belongs to Christ. Seeing that clearly does two things at once. It tells you plainly what was done to you. And it tells you that you were never his to lose.
