Jesus fed thousands of people on a hillside, and he took only three up the mountain where he was transfigured. If giving some people more access than others were unchristian, the Gospels would be hard to explain. It is not unchristian. Ordered closeness was part of how the most loving life was lived. The better question is not who deserves more of you, but what you have been entrusted to care for, and who can help you care for it well.
That shift, from deserving to stewarding, changes how the whole problem looks. Dr. Dharius Daniels, a pastor who wrote a book on what he calls relational intelligence, says the church has often blurred two things that need to be kept apart. He describes a confusion between selfishness and stewardship, in which any relational choice made for a person’s own good gets treated as a moral failure. In his words, it was as though “if people made relational decisions that were in their best interest or spiritually, emotionally, financially, professionally in some way that was seen as selfish and not sacrificial, when I’m arguing that in some cases that’s stewardship.”
Why Does Pulling Back Feel Like Failing at Love?
Part of the answer is that most Christians have been taught very little about ordinary friendship. Daniels says his interest in the subject grew partly out of frustration: nearly every church resource he found on relationships dealt with marriage or parenting, and very little addressed platonic relationships from a biblical angle. So people improvise the friendships that shape them most, and when they make a hard call, they have no category for it except guilt.
Daniels gives that guilt a different name. Choosing carefully who stands close to you, he argues, can be a form of loving yourself in the sense Scripture assumes when it says to love your neighbor as yourself. He frames it as protecting something God is doing: “that is the valuing of what God is doing in my life in such a way that I want to be a good steward over it.”
If your life were simply yours, guarding it could look like hoarding. If your life is something God is shaping, guarding it looks more like faithfulness. A steward does not give the house keys to everyone who knocks, and nobody calls that unloving.
Over years of pastoring, Daniels noticed that “people’s greatest joy and greatest pain came from the same place.” The place was relationships. He saw the pattern in his own life too. His life moved forward, spiritually and otherwise, “when someone new came in that needed to come in or when someone left out that needed to leave out.” The people closest to you are never neutral. They are part of how your life goes.
What Jesus’s Circles Show, and What They Do Not
Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, responding to Daniels, points out something many people in ministry quietly forget: “Jesus had times where he pulled away.” The Gospels bear this out:
“And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.” (Luke 5:16)
That verse comes right after crowds gathered to hear him and be healed. Jesus did not stop loving them. He also did not let their need set the terms of every hour.
Around him were layers of nearness. There were crowds who heard him teach and were fed. There was a larger group sent out ahead of him. Luke 10:1 says, “After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.” The KJV reads seventy here; many modern translations read seventy-two, because ancient manuscripts differ on the number. Then there were the twelve. Mark 3:14 says, “And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach.” Being with him was part of the calling itself.
Inside the twelve, there were three. When Jesus went to the house of Jairus, Mark 5:37 says, “And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.” The same three went up the mountain at the transfiguration (Mark 9:2) and were brought further into the garden of Gethsemane (Mark 14:33). What they received there is telling. On the mountain they saw his glory, and in the garden they saw his anguish and were asked to stay awake and watch with him. The inner circle was trusted with more of Jesus, and more was asked of it. Closeness was a weight to be carried, which is exactly how a steward thinks about it.
These passages describe what Jesus did; they do not command every Christian to sort friends into four tiers. Jesus was training people for a mission, and the circles served that purpose. Still, the description is real. The most loving person who ever lived did not give everyone the same access to him.
The pattern also undoes the word deserve. The crowds were not unworthy. Jesus fed them, healed them and wept over their city. The three were not closer because they had earned it; Peter was the one who needed some of the sharpest correction. Closeness in the Gospels tracks calling and purpose, not merit, and that frees you from treating your inner circle as a ranking of people’s value.
If It Is Not About Deserving, What Decides Who Comes Closer?
Daniels treats Jesus as the model for how to live relationally, and one of his examples is uncomfortable on purpose. When Peter pushed back against Jesus’s talk of suffering and death, Jesus answered him with the sharp words recorded in Mark 8:33. Daniels does not hold up the wording as something to copy. He holds up the principle. Jesus had already said, “Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends” (John 15:15). Friendship with Jesus included hearing hard truth.
So Daniels names honesty as a mark of the person you can call a friend. He ties it to Proverbs:
“Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.” (Proverbs 27:6)
A friend is someone whose honesty you can receive because you trust they care about your future, and someone you can be honest with in return. Then he adds a line that clarifies a lot of confusing relationships: “honesty does not ruin a friendship, it exposes it whether or not it actually was what you’ve been calling it.”
A relationship that cannot survive a true sentence may be a pleasant acquaintance you have been calling a friendship. That does not make it worthless. It does tell you how much weight it can bear.
Daniels sharpens the point with a story many people misread. Joab looks like the ideal loyal friend to King David. But when David wanted Uriah dead, he sent the order to Joab, and Joab carried it out (2 Samuel 11). That is loyalty of a kind, Daniels says, but not biblical loyalty. “Biblical loyalty has a loyalty to your future more than your feelings. And they don’t aid and assist you in self-destructive behavior in the name of loyalty.”
So the people who belong closer are not the ones who are most fun, most persistent or most needy. They are the ones who can tell you the truth, hear it from you, and want your future more than your approval. Daniels turns the question around, too. Part of his book asks what kind of friend you are, not only what kind you have. He says some of his friends “have been God’s grace walking into my life on two legs.” Inner circles are made of people who are becoming that for each other.
Could Stewardship Become an Excuse?
It could, and Daniels guards against that from the other side. He thinks some Christians define loving a neighbor too thinly, as if it only meant not harming anyone. He points to James 4:17: “Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” Stewardship does not license withdrawing from people and calling it wisdom. It still asks what good you are able to do and owe.
The opposite danger is just as real: a draining pattern that feels like sacrifice. For this, Daniels offers his most practical distinction. Talking about relationships that have become codependent, he says, “it’s very important for you to do your best to discern the difference between meeting a legitimate relational need and accommodating someone’s preferences.”
He grounds this in a balanced claim. Only God can meet all of a person’s needs, he says, but some needs are meant to be met through people, as God showed when he made Adam and Eve for each other. So the answer is not to stop meeting needs. It is to stop confusing needs with preferences. A need is something a person genuinely requires from someone like you. A preference is something they would like, and saying no to it may be uncomfortable without being unloving.
Daniels is also realistic about what you cannot do. Someone who leans on you in a codependent way may be carrying old wounds, and he says God sometimes has healing work to do in that person’s soul. You cannot do that work for them. As he puts it, “the only thing you can do if you’re on the other end is not try to fix the person, but it’s to set a boundary and to make sure that you discern the difference between needs and preferences in between what should be given by me and what can only come to you through God.”
That last phrase answers the selfishness worry. Some limits are not about protecting yourself at all. They are about refusing to stand where only God should stand in someone’s life.
Fences, Walls and the Conversation Most People Avoid
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” (Proverbs 4:23)
Many people read that verse and build a wall. Daniels thinks that is a natural mistake, since “a wall is sometimes more often than not a reaction to pain.” But the verse asks for guarding, not sealing off. He contrasts a wall, where no one gets in, with “a fence where you choose what you allow in and what you allow out.”
Fields names the two extremes most people swing between: “most people, we live on extremes. So we go to everybody’s welcome, nobody’s welcome.” The fence is the place between. Jesus’s circles worked the same way: the crowds could still reach him, and the seventy were still sent in his name. What changed with each circle was how much of himself he entrusted and what he asked in return.
For relationships that already exist, Daniels points to what he calls realignment. By the time most people think hard about their relationships, those relationships already have long histories and settled labels. Realignment means deciding, on purpose, what a relationship actually is and what it needs to become, and then saying so. His book includes criteria for that decision and sample talking points for the conversation. They are not meant to be read aloud word for word but to give people a shape for words they have never said before.
He notes two kinds of people who struggle here. Some have no trouble telling the truth but struggle to do it with love and grace. Others extend love and grace easily but avoid being as honest as they need to be. Both tend to let relationships drift rather than speak.
So the first step is smaller than it sounds. Pick one relationship that has been drifting and name, privately, what it actually is now and what you believe it should be. Ask whether what that person wants from you is a need or a preference, and what part of it only God can give. Then decide whether you owe them a conversation. Drifting asks nothing of either of you. A realignment conversation, spoken with both truth and grace, treats the other person as someone who can bear the truth, which is how Jesus treated his friends.
