A post tells you the Bible teaches something no pastor ever mentioned to you, or that a church council invented a doctrine to keep people in line. It sounds sure of itself. It may cite a book, a degree or an ancient document. How do you tell whether you are looking at research or a performance of research?
Real research leaves a trail you can walk yourself. It sends you back to the original text. It deals with the strongest arguments against it. It has been put in front of people qualified to say it is wrong. A claim that cannot show you that trail has not earned your belief, however confident it sounds. Esau McCaulley, who taught New Testament and early Christianity at Northeastern Seminary in Rochester, New York, at the time of this conversation, describes each of these marks from the inside.
What Would Real Research Leave Behind?
Before you test a claim, it helps to know what genuine work on a question looks like. McCaulley walks through his own process for reaching a conclusion on a single chapter, Galatians 1. He starts with the Greek text. He translates it, does textual criticism to find the earliest and most original reading, and studies every place the chapter uses the Old Testament, first in Greek and then in Hebrew. That gives him his own first reading.
Then the real work starts. Next comes the history of interpretation: everything people have written on the passage from around AD 300 forward. For a passage like that, he estimates there are probably ten or eleven views. He lays out each one, asks what evidence its defenders offer, and weighs how valid that evidence is. Only after that does he ask whether he has anything new to say. Usually he does not: “most of the time somebody has gotten it right along the way.”
That observation becomes a working rule. “Anytime someone comes to me and says, I have an interpretation nobody’s ever seen, you’re either a genius or a heretic.” He adds that the odds favor heretic, and not even an original one, since most false readings repeat errors the church answered long ago.
The pace is slow. McCaulley said that to prepare to teach Ephesians, he expected to read ten to fifteen commentaries all the way through and to translate the letter multiple times. He described three years of full days spent on his dissertation. His summary: “you’ll almost never find me come to a conclusion about anything in like a day, a week, or a month.”
He does not expect ordinary readers to match that. He says plainly, “you couldn’t expect a lay person to do that.” What he asks of them is smaller and still demanding: “it takes patience and wide reading.” For someone starting from zero, he suggests a reputable Bible dictionary or theological encyclopedia rather than a search engine. Read the short entry, then follow the works it cites to a longer article, then a short book, then the classic works on the subject. He names Alister McGrath’s Christian Theology as one introduction that lays out what Christians have historically taught. In his words: “start small work towards introductions, and then work towards specialized literature.”
A real claim, then, should be able to say where it sits among the views that already exist. A viral claim that presents itself as a discovery nobody else noticed carries a very heavy burden of proof.
Does It Take You Back to the Text Itself?
The most practical test is also the one anyone can run. McCaulley explains the difference between primary and secondary sources. “A primary source is when you’re dealing with an argument, you’re dealing what the person actually wrote or said.” A secondary source is someone describing what the primary source says. If you want to know what Paul taught, Paul’s letters are primary. A book about Paul is secondary.
Both have their place. The danger comes when an argument rests on secondary claims and never puts the primary text in front of you. McCaulley’s suggestion is simple: when someone says the Bible says something, ask where. “If you go back to that actual text, nine times outta ten, they’re wrong.” That figure is his estimate from experience, not a measured statistic. The underlying point is testable all the same. A claim about a passage either matches the passage in context or it does not, and you can open the book and see.
He describes a man who approached him to argue about what John 1:1 says about the identity of God. McCaulley offered to walk through the Greek text and the manuscript evidence with him, and to read the other passages that speak to Jesus’s divine identity. His observation about such encounters: “They know what they’ve been told to say about the primary sources.” He calls the alternative “the patient return to the text.”
History works the same way. Claims about the Council of Nicaea circulate widely, and McCaulley’s response is that its documents can be found and read. One step comes even before that. You have to know exactly what a claim asserts before you can judge it, and you should not repeat a claim you cannot state precisely.
McCaulley states his own conviction about where the sources lead: “Christianity is not afraid of history. We can return to the sources because the evidence is on our side.” Treat that as a confident claim like any other. Its strength is that it invites the check.
Has Anyone Qualified Looked at It?
Most people cannot read every source behind every claim. McCaulley offers two faster indicators. The first is the publisher. He compares it to record labels in the mid-nineties South, where a respected label told you what to expect before you heard a track. In publishing, a university press such as Oxford, Cambridge or Baylor means other trained scholars reviewed the manuscript before it went out. He also names publishers with a history of Christian orthodoxy, such as IVP and Zondervan. A book from an unknown press with no institution behind it may have been turned down everywhere else.
He limits the test at once. “Just because a university press published it, it doesn’t mean that it’s right. It just means that is scholarly.” Then: “You could be scholarly and wrong, right?” A respected press tells you the work met a standard. The conclusion still has to stand on its evidence.
Behind the press test sits a deeper one: did the author submit the work to people who could refute it? “If you wanna be considered a scholar, you have to submit your stuff to public review by sending it to journals, sending it to university presses, and sending it to reputable publishers.” McCaulley applies this to himself. He expected reviewers to point out where his own book was wrong, “because I’ve now submitted myself to public review.” Impressing only people who cannot check you is, as he puts it, a cheap way of establishing yourself.
Scholars also write a history of research, a survey of the views held on a topic. If a dramatic theory never shows up there, that silence tells you something. On fringe theories about Egypt, he suggests you “look at the history of research on Egypt and see if the crazy theory is even mentioned as an option.” Often it is not, and his conclusion is blunt: “not only is this wrong, it’s so wrong that people don’t even take the time to say that it’s wrong.”
Who Is It Actually Arguing With?
The second fast indicator is the opponent. A serious book on Paul’s theology engages the leading scholars in the field, including those it disagrees with. If it ignores them and spends its pages attacking a pastor, McCaulley says, “you’re not really doing scholarship, right? You’re just doing polemics.” The question to ask is this: “are they engaging in the best presentation of Christianity, or are they engaging in the caricature?”
He holds himself to the same standard. If he wanted to critique Islam or the Five Percenters, he says, he would find the strongest version of their argument and answer that. His example of the opposite is a critic online who spent about fifteen minutes attacking the saying that God won’t give you more than you can handle. “That’s not a principle of Christian theology. It’s a catchphrase,” McCaulley responded.
The primary text settles the matter quickly. Describing a crisis in Asia, Paul writes:
“We were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life.” (2 Corinthians 1:8)
The apostle admits he was carried past his own strength. So the slogan fails against Scripture, and an attack on the slogan never reaches the Bible. One look at the source exposes both errors.
Are the Credentials Real?
A degree after a name looks like evidence. Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, argues it is only a lead. She recalled a debate where a speaker defended his sources as credible because they were in the Library of Congress, which holds so many books that inclusion says nothing about quality. She also described tracing one author’s sources and finding that they mostly cited one another.
Her advice is the practical version of everything above: “Don’t just see the letters behind the name, but research the letters behind the name.” Confirm that the school exists and is recognized. Look at whether the footnotes lead outward to independent scholarship or loop back through a small circle of writers vouching for each other. Fields reasons that someone willing to misstate their education may misstate their evidence too.
Where These Tests Run Out
None of these markers is proof. A respected press can publish a bad argument. An independent writer can be right, a possibility McCaulley allows when he notes that every now and then a talented independent artist comes up outside the major labels. Scholarly consensus has been wrong before. Someone could reasonably object that these tests just favor insiders.
The tests answer a narrower question than that objection assumes. They show where the burden of proof lies. A claim that skips the primary text, avoids its strongest critics and never faced review has not been shown false. It has simply not done the work that would let you trust it. The final court is still the evidence itself, which is why the primary-source test matters most.
The tests also cut both ways. They apply to claims Christians like as much as to claims against the faith. McCaulley is candid that the church he grew up in read the King James Bible and thin study guides, and that this left people unable to answer serious arguments, or often even to defend what Christians have historically taught. A believer who has never gone to the sources is exposed to the same confident voices as anyone else.
What Are You Hoping to Find?
McCaulley’s last test is aimed at the reader. Nobody approaches a contested question neutrally, he argues, because the answer affects how we live. “Not only do we have to be careful of the motives of other people, we have to be careful of our own motives.” He has watched people move through argument after argument, rejecting each weak one, until they land on one plausible enough to permit what they wanted. “People will keep finding arguments until they find it.”
He tells of talking with a nonbeliever in college for about three hours about apologetics, church history and theology. Around two in the morning, the man asked whether becoming a Christian meant giving up his relationship with his girlfriend. Neither of them had raised the subject. The real question had been sitting under the intellectual one the whole time.
He draws on Genesis 4:7, where God warns Cain before he murders Abel:
“If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.” (Genesis 4:7)
In context, this is a specific warning to a specific man about anger and the act it was leading to. McCaulley applies it more broadly to how desire can bend our reading. That reaches past the scene itself, though the principle beneath it, that desire masters the person who does not master it, sits close to the plain sense of the warning.
Pain can steer a reading as strongly as desire. Some people conclude Christianity is false after being mistreated in church. That hurt is real and should never be dismissed. McCaulley asks people to examine it honestly and to ask whether they are moved by the evidence or by what a church did to them. “We have to get to the heart of not just doing analysis of other people. We have to analyze ourselves and who we are and what we bring to the text.”
So the question to put to any confident claim is where it came from, and the trail should end at a text you can read and a record of people who checked it. The same question belongs to the person reading. Someone who knows what they are hoping to find is far harder to fool, whether the voice belongs to a stranger online or to their own wishes.
