If you forgave someone and it still hurts, the forgiveness did not fail. In Scripture, forgiving is a decision about a debt. You stop collecting it yourself and hand the case to God, who judges rightly. Your feelings may take much longer, and the decision stands while they do. Forgiveness also leaves you free to protect yourself from someone who keeps doing harm. Two passages are usually misread on this question: Paul’s command to leave vengeance to God, and Jesus’s command to turn the other cheek. Read in context, each one asks for something more specific than feeling fine or standing still.
The hardest part of forgiveness, for many people, is that it seems to let the offender off. Yana Conner, adult ministry director at Vertical Church and author of Living Beyond Offense: Doing the Hard Work of Forgiveness God’s Way, describes exactly that resistance in herself. She wanted justice and accountability, and she wanted the other person to feel the weight of what they had done. The way through was to notice where the Bible places that desire.
What Does Romans 12 Ask You to Hand Over?
The verse people half remember is this one:
“Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord” (Romans 12:19).
The phrase “give place unto wrath” is old English for leaving room. Paul tells the reader to step aside so that God’s judgment has space to act.
Look at what the verse leaves standing. The wrong is treated as real. Repayment is treated as real. The only question is who has the right to collect. Conner’s definition follows the verse closely: “Forgiveness is releasing someone of their debt, but it’s also entrusting their debt to the Lord.” The forgiver tells God, in effect, that he is the better judge and that “we’re gonna trust you to rectify or sort of balance the scales.” The cost is that we often never see the scales balanced. Forgiving means trusting God with an outcome you may never witness.
So the demand for justice moves to a higher court. From the forgiver’s side, Conner puts it this way: “I’m not holding you accountable, but I’m trusting that God’s gonna hold you accountable.” This is why forgiveness, rightly understood, does not betray the part of you that knows a real wrong was done. That part of you is handing its case to the one Judge who will hear all of it.
The surrounding verses close off two misreadings. Just before, Paul writes, “Recompense to no man evil for evil” (Romans 12:17). Just after, he tells the reader to feed a hungry enemy, and ends with “Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21). Handing vengeance to God goes together with doing good to the person you released, so it cannot be revenge on a delay. And a few verses later, Paul calls the governing authority “the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil” (Romans 13:4). Romans 12 forbids private retaliation. Reporting a crime, protecting the vulnerable and letting rightful authorities act all remain open.
What Was Jesus Addressing When He Said to Turn the Other Cheek?
The cheek command sits in the Sermon on the Mount, in a series where Jesus sets “ye have heard” against “but I say unto you.” The verses read:
“Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also” (Matthew 5:38–39).
Conner starts with the law Jesus quotes. In her reading, God gave the eye-for-an-eye rule as a guardrail, because wronged people tend to slide from justice into vengeance, and the rule capped the response at the size of the injury. She argues that by Jesus’s day people were taking more than the injury warranted. That background is her reconstruction. The verse itself does not report it. Her main point stands on the text alone. Jesus speaks against retaliation, and in her paraphrase of his logic, “It is better for you to get slapped again than it is for you to retaliate against your offender.” Retaliation multiplies harm.
Then she turns to a detail many readers skip: the right cheek. A right-handed person striking the right cheek delivers a backhand. In that culture, she explains, a backhand was a humiliating blow, the kind a master might give a slave to say “you are beneath me,” while an open-handed slap passed between equals. Turning the other cheek leaves the striker two choices: strike again as an equal, or stop. The gesture refuses the insult and asks the offender to see what he has done. In Conner’s words, “This idea of turning the other cheek isn’t ignoring sin, isn’t allowing someone to continue to abuse you, but it’s actually a way of confronting.” She adds, “It’s a humble way of confronting, and it’s also a restorative way of confronting.” The hope is that the offender wakes up and chooses another way.
Does the Argument Depend on the Backhand Reading?
This is the strongest objection, and it deserves a direct answer. The backhand explanation is one interpretation some Christian readers hold, and it rests on a reconstruction of first-century customs that the verse does not spell out. Other faithful interpreters read the command more simply, as a vivid picture of refusing to answer insult with insult. If they are right, does the case for confronting an offender collapse?
It holds, and the reason is in the text. On the plainest reading, Matthew 5:39 governs how you respond to an insult. It forbids getting even. It says nothing about remaining in danger, and it says nothing against telling the truth. The same Jesus, in the same Gospel, commands what to do when someone wrongs you: “go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone” (Matthew 18:15). If the person refuses to listen, the circle widens to two or three witnesses and then to the church. Whatever the cheek means, Jesus elsewhere requires speaking up, so silence cannot be the lesson.
Very few people actually walk those steps. Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, observes that most never get past the first, and many never take it. They talk to someone else instead, then declare that they wash their hands of the person. Conner calls her own version “quiet quitting” a friendship, letting it fade and calling it seasonal when an offense simply went unaddressed. Matthew 18 puts forgiveness on the side of honest confrontation.
The order matters too. Conner decides to forgive before the hard conversation, because “forgiveness is something we do before the Lord.” The conversation then carries no demand for an apology as the price of release. The debt already belongs to God. What remains is truth-telling that gives the relationship a chance to be repaired.
So Why Does It Still Hurt?
Because the decision was about the debt, and feelings answer to a different clock. Conner says it plainly: “You might still be angry, you might still be in pain.” You might not want to talk to the person at all. The decision stands anyway, and you live it out alongside the feelings. With her father, that meant answering his calls warmly and treating him as a forgiven man even when the old hurt rose.
Many believers carry an extra weight here. They were taught to forgive and forget, they cannot forget, and so they conclude they never forgave. The familiar line about a “sea of forgetfulness” turns out to be missing from Scripture. Micah says to God, “Thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea” (Micah 7:19), a picture of sins thrown away. Hebrews comes closer: “And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more” (Hebrews 10:17). But Conner reads it as a writer “trying to use language that helps us to understand how God relates to our sins.” An all-knowing God treats the forgiven as though the debt were gone. The promise makes his forgiveness trustworthy. That reading fits Hebrews to Micah.
People cannot erase memory on command. Some offenses live deep in the body, and some are still happening in front of you. So Conner offers a different practice: “I think we need to trade the forgive and forget model for forgive and faithfully cast.” The decision is made once. Each time memory stirs the anger, you throw the already-forgiven offense back into the deep. The returning pain becomes a cue to cast again, instead of evidence that the first decision failed. One limit applies: “We’re only casting forgiven sins” back into the sea. A fresh offense calls for the work of forgiveness, and the Matthew 18 steps, to begin again.
Fields describes how feelings tend to follow: “Feelings catch up to action,” though sometimes slowly. Waiting for the emotions first only makes the work harder. As she says, “I can’t wait for my emotions to show up.” Love acts from the will, the way an adult pays bills she would rather not pay.
There is one more reason the pain returns, which Fields recalls from June Hunt’s writing on forgiveness. We can only forgive the harm we understand at the time. Someone who has lost a family member to another’s violence may forgive early, then reach a birthday or a graduation and feel the absence as a new loss. Conner names that moment: “You took more than I was aware of in the moment that I said, I forgive you.” The answer is to extend the forgiveness to the newly discovered loss, sometimes with space to process and an honest word to the person. Fresh pain in that case shows the debt was larger than it first looked.
Does Forgiving Mean Staying Within Their Reach?
Conner keeps forgiveness open to reconciliation for most offenses and rejects what she calls “forgive and cancel.” She draws a clear line at abuse, and her reading of the cheek command already rules out letting someone keep abusing you. Matthew 18 also allows a changed relationship with someone who stays unrepentant: “let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican” (Matthew 18:17). Conner reads this as permission to restructure or end the relationship, with counsel from a pastor, friends or a counselor, and with the hope that the distance helps the offender see their sin and turn to God. The debt still sits with God either way. If you are being harmed at home, reach out for help. Romans 13 is a reminder that seeking protection from rightful authority is a different thing from revenge.

Underneath all of it is the reason Conner gives for forgiving at all: “The biblical why for forgiveness is to forgive because you have been forgiven.” Paul ties it to the same root:
“Forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you” (Ephesians 4:32).
God moved toward his offenders before they apologized. A person who forgives on that ground can carry lingering pain without panic. The case is already in the hands of a Judge who will settle every account, and that leaves the forgiver free to do good to the one who caused the wound.
