It would be a contradiction if Christians claimed that God is one God and three Gods, or one person and three persons. The doctrine of the Trinity claims neither. It says God is one in his nature and three in his persons. Nature answers the question of what God is. Person answers the question of who. A contradiction needs both halves of a claim to be about the same thing in the same sense, and these halves are not. That distinction is how the apologist Abdu Murray answers the objection, and it holds up under pressure better than its critics expect.
The answer can still sound like a lawyer’s escape hatch, and Murray is a lawyer by training. So the right response is to test it. Lay out what a contradiction actually requires, find the assumption that makes the doctrine look contradictory and see whether the distinction survives the strongest objections against it.
What Would Make It a Contradiction?
A contradiction is not just a claim that is hard to picture. It is a pair of claims that cannot both be true at the same time and in the same respect. “The door is open” and “the door is closed” contradict each other only if we mean the same door at the same moment. Change the respect and the conflict disappears.
Counting works the same way. One and three clash only when they count the same unit. One week is seven days, and no one calls that bad arithmetic, because week and day are different units. That example is only about counting. It is not a model of God, and it would mislead if pressed further. Its point is narrow. The arithmetic objection to the Trinity quietly assumes that “one God” and “three persons” count the same kind of thing. That assumption is the hidden premise, and it is where the argument should be examined.
Murray names both of the claims that really would be incoherent: “It’s not one God in three gods or one person in three persons. Those are both contradictory ideas.” He agrees with the skeptic about which statements fail. His disagreement is about whether the Christian doctrine is one of them.
Nature and Person Are Different Questions
Murray’s illustration is deliberately ordinary. Hold up a phone and ask what it is. You can give several answers: a machine, a computer, a non-living thing. It has a nature. But you cannot sensibly ask who the phone is, and he clarifies that he does not mean who is on the other end of a call. The phone has no one inside it. It has a nature and no personhood.
A human being has both. Ask what Murray is, and the answer is a living thing, a human being. Ask who he is, and the answer is Abdu. Two different questions get two different answers, and we ask both about people every day without noticing the distinction we rely on.
The key move is the definition of person, because the everyday word misleads. “What I mean by personhood, and what has classically been meant by this in terms of the Trinity, is a center of consciousness,” Murray explains. He adds that he means “a mind that interacts with other minds and the outside world.” On this definition, a person is a center of knowing and relating. It is not a separate chunk of being.
Put the two concepts together and the doctrine becomes a precise claim: one divine nature, fully possessed by three centers of consciousness. Murray describes the persons as “each the same being, but three different personhoods or centers of consciousness.” His conclusion follows directly: “It’s not a contradiction to say God can be one in his nature and three in his persons.” That is the doctrine the church has confessed for centuries as one of the essentials of the faith.
Isn’t the Distinction Invented to Rescue the Doctrine?
This is the strongest version of the skeptic’s reply. A critic can grant that the doctrine is formally consistent and still suspect that the nature-person distinction was manufactured for this one occasion. If the only place it ever applies is God, it looks like special pleading.
Two things weigh against that suspicion. First, the distinction already does work in ordinary reasoning. The phone and the man show that “what something is” and “who someone is” come apart. A nature can exist without any person at all. The Trinity applies a gap between two questions that was already there.
Second, the distinction does not claim to let us imagine the inner life of God, and Murray says so plainly. “Because we’re a unipersonal being, we have one nature and one personhood. So we can’t really understand what it’s like to be tripersonal because we aren’t tripersonal.” Every case we know pairs one nature with one person, so we have no experience of anything else. That is exactly why human comparisons break down. Two human beings share a kind of nature, but they are two separate beings. Applied to God, that picture gives you three gods.
He compares this to eternity. We can reason about never having begun, mathematically or conceptually, but we cannot really grasp it, because “we swim in the sea of time.” Being unable to picture something is different from its being incoherent. The skeptic needs incoherence, and the difficulty only shows that the subject is beyond our experience.
This is the work done by a line Murray says he first heard on a radio broadcast: “We can apprehend the Trinity, but we can’t comprehend the Trinity.” To comprehend is to grasp something completely. To apprehend is to grasp it truly without grasping all of it. His qualifier carries the weight: “It may transcend understanding, but it doesn’t defy logic.”
Why the Familiar Pictures Make Things Worse
If the logic is sound, why does the doctrine so often sound like nonsense? One cause is language. “When we think of the word person, we do think of insular being,” Murray observes. Hear “three persons” with that meaning and you hear three separate individuals. The other cause is the comparisons Christians reach for.
“I don’t like talking about the Trinity through analogies because they tend to lead to heresy,” Murray says. Take water, ice and steam. “Any one body of water is not simultaneously steam and liquid and solid.” Water takes one form and then another. Teach God that way and you get modalism, the view that one person appears as Father, then as Son, then as Spirit. The historic doctrine holds that God is always Father, Son and Spirit at once.
This bears directly on the contradiction question. Many people who reject the Trinity as illogical are rejecting a picture Christians gave them. Reasoning through the concepts directly avoids the problem, because a bad analogy quietly replaces the claim it was meant to illustrate.
The Objection From Reverence
Not every objection is about arithmetic, and Murray knows the other kind from the inside. He grew up Muslim and converted to Christianity at 27 after a nine-year search into the differences between Islam and Christianity. “As a Muslim, I thought the Trinity was one of the silliest ideas” the world had believed, he recalls. Islam holds, as he summarizes it, that “God is one in his nature and one in his person. There is no distinction within him whatsoever.” From that starting point, three persons look like an insult to God’s greatness.
“They think that this idea of three persons would actually create helpers for God,” he says. “So if God the Father is God, why does he need the Spirit and the Son to help him?” He describes the motive behind this objection generously. These stumbling blocks, he says, are “not based on a desire to misunderstand, but on the desire to actually want to worship God in a valuable way and in a way that doesn’t insult him.”
The nature-person distinction answers this worry too. A helper is a second being with its own separate nature, recruited to assist the first. The Son and the Spirit each fully share the one divine nature, so the helper picture assumes the very tritheism the doctrine rejects. Murray also insists that this real disagreement should not be smoothed over. Telling a Muslim that both faiths believe the same thing about God disrespects both, he argues, because it withholds what many have called the dignity of difference: “The dignity to say, I take your worldview so seriously that I’m willing to say it’s different than mine.”
What Follows, and What Does Not
Here the argument needs discipline. Showing that a claim is consistent does not show that it is true. Many false claims are perfectly consistent. The nature-person distinction removes one reason for rejecting the doctrine. The positive case has to come from elsewhere.
Murray grounds it in two places. He says “logic actually allows for the Trinity,” and he says the Bible teaches it. The biblical case is cumulative. Scripture insists on one God:
“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD” (Deuteronomy 6:4).
It also presents Father, Son and Spirit as distinct. Jesus commands baptism “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost” (Matthew 28:19), listing three without merging them into one. In his prayer, Jesus addresses the Father as another who loved him: “for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world” (John 17:24). Love that passes between Father and Son before creation requires two who are really distinct, while Deuteronomy rules out two gods. Holding those texts together is what pushes readers toward one nature and more than one person.
Readers of the KJV sometimes expect the case to rest on 1 John 5:7, the one verse that names three as one in a single sentence. That wording is missing from the earliest Greek manuscripts, so the doctrine should not lean on it. The wider pattern carries the weight without it.
Murray then goes a step further. Borrowing from Greg Koukl, he frames it this way: “The Trinity isn’t a problem to be solved. It is a solution to the problem.” His reasoning runs like this. If God is the greatest possible being, then “he would need nothing to be who he is.” Yet Christians describe God in relational terms: loving, kind, compassionate. “Compassion requires the compassionate one and the one on whom compassion is given,” he notes. A God who is one person alone would have no one to love until he made someone. He would need creation in order to be himself.
A triune God has no such need. “So God exists in the eternity of relationship. He doesn’t lack relationship. He defines relationship and that makes sense of him.” Paul tells the Athenians that God is not served by human hands “as though he needed any thing” (Acts 17:25). On Murray’s reading, creation becomes a gift that God did not need to give. “And so the Trinity makes selfless creation possible.”
This argument is stronger than the consistency defense, and also more exposed. It depends on premises a Muslim or a philosophical theist could question, especially the claim that love belongs to God’s nature from all eternity rather than being something God expresses toward creation. Someone who grants every step will find the Trinity explanatory. Someone who denies the relational premise can still reject it. What the argument does show is that, given what Christians already believe God is like, the Trinity explains more than it costs.
The same reasoning reaches the cross. If Father and Son were one person in two roles, a skeptic could call the atonement “just shifting money from your right pocket to your left pocket.” Murray, who holds to penal substitution, answers that because the Son is a distinct person sharing the Father’s nature, “then when the Son on that cross makes that payment, it’s actually real. It’s not an illusion.” Christians describe the atonement in more than one way, but the underlying point applies broadly. Anything that truly passes between Father and Son requires that they be truly distinct.
The objection that the Trinity is bad arithmetic rests on one overlooked assumption, that “one” and “three” count the same thing. Remove that assumption and the debate moves somewhere more interesting. The question is no longer whether Christians can count. It is whether God was alone before anything existed, or whether love was already there.
