A church can train ordinary members to answer hard questions by turning apologetics from an event into a habit. The work has three parts. Find out which claims your people are actually hearing. Work through each claim together, slowly, with the Bible open and the evidence on the table. Then repeat the cycle on a schedule, so it becomes part of the church’s normal life. This guide helps a pastor, a small group leader or a few willing members design that habit and test it on one real claim before committing to more.
You can use it alone as a planning exercise, or with a group over two or three meetings. If you are working alone, write your answers out in full. Planning that stays in your head tends to stay there. If you are leading a group, read each section aloud before starting its activity, and let people pass on any question that asks them to talk about their own doubts or their own family. The goal is to build something, and nobody should have to confess anything to help.
The guide draws on a Jude 3 Project podcast conversation in which Lisa Fields asked Dr. Phillip Pointer, pastor of St. Mark Baptist Church in Little Rock, Arkansas, why he leads his congregation in learning to defend the faith and how he goes about it. His answers work less as a theory than as a method you can watch in action and then copy.
Start with an honest map of your own church
Before designing anything new, describe what already exists. Take ten minutes and answer these on paper. Answer with what actually happens. A sermon series from three years ago does not count as a current practice.
- When a member hears a claim against Christianity this month, where in the church could they bring it? Name an actual time and an actual person.
- When did your church last address a specific false teaching by name, and how did people respond?
- Who in your congregation already reads deeply in history, Scripture or apologetics? Do others know that about them?
- What happens to the questions people ask after a Bible study ends?
Keep this sheet. You will compare it with your plan at the end and see what has changed.
Read the commission where it was given
Pointer began with Scripture. Asked what moved him to start this work, he said it was “a biblical exhortation,” pointing to Jude and to Peter. Read both passages slowly and pay attention to who is being addressed.
Jude 1:3 reads: “Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.”
1 Peter 3:15 reads: “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.”
The companion article covers who these letters were written to. This guide asks a planning question instead: what would a church have to provide for these commands to be realistic for its members? Two more passages help answer that.
Ephesians 4:12 says Christ gave leaders to the church “For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.” Acts 2:42 describes the first believers this way: “And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.”
Observation task: read the four passages together and list every verb. Mark which verbs belong to leaders and which belong to all believers. Then notice that in Acts 2:42 teaching and fellowship sit side by side as things the whole community kept doing together.
Interpretation task: from these texts alone, state in one sentence what a leader’s job is in equipping, and in one sentence what an ordinary member’s job is. Keep the sentences modest. Peter asks for readiness to give a reason to whoever asks. He says nothing about debate skill or formal training. Ephesians places the equipping on leaders and the ministry on the saints.
Watch how one pastor works a single claim
Pointer’s account of handling karma with his congregation is the most detailed example he gives, and it contains a repeatable pattern. He noticed Christians posting about karma and treating it as the same thing as sowing and reaping. Here is how he handled it. Each step is something your church can copy.
- Find the verse being borrowed. People usually point to Galatians 6:7: “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”
- Read it in its setting. Pointer argues the passage is about giving to those who teach you Scripture. The verse just before it says, “Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things” (Galatians 6:6). His summary of the method: “it’s teaching text in context.”
- Trace where the competing idea comes from. His study looked at the history of karma. Pointer explains that it depends on reincarnation, so the payback comes in another life: “Karma doesn’t even work in this life.”
- Ask what the idea does for people. He asked his people, “Why do we want karma? Why do we wish karma on others?” His answer: “It’s really, vengeance is what you’re after,” which he sets against the biblical teaching that vengeance belongs to God. Romans 12:19 says it directly: “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.”
- Bring people back to the text. His closing line to them was “Let’s not be pastored by social media.”
The fourth step is the one most churches skip, and it may explain why the lesson stuck. Pointer says people told him, “pastor, I never thought about it like that.” He also gives a reason memes travel so easily: “they see a meme and it sounds good, and it resonates.” A correction that only addresses facts leaves that pull untouched. Asking what desire a claim satisfies lets people examine the pull itself.
Pointer gives a second kind of example, one about evidence. Against the claim that Constantine invented Christian doctrine at the Council of Nicaea in 325, he argues that Christians have about three hundred years of earlier writings on Christ, doctrine and practice. He brought young adults into his library to show them his set of the church fathers who wrote before that council, and they were surprised the writings really existed. Treat the dates and the scope of those writings as his claims, and check them against a reliable source when you plan your own session. Checking claims is the habit you are trying to build anyway.
Rehearse the method on a claim of your own
This is the main exercise. Set aside about an hour, alone or with two or three others.
Choose the claim. Pointer argues for addressing the specific teachings people are actually hearing. He describes “deliberate dialogue around the specific issues,” and he names examples from his own setting: Hebrew Israelite teaching, and the message that you can pray to the ancestors and don’t need Jesus. He grounds this in how Paul confronts heresy by name, and how Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount states a familiar reading of the law before correcting it (Matthew 5:21-22). Pick one claim someone in your church has actually raised. If you are unsure which claims are circulating, ask a few members privately, without pressing anyone to explain why they are asking.
Work it through the five steps. Write a short paragraph for each one. What Scripture, if any, is being borrowed? What does that passage say in its own context? Where did the competing idea originate, according to a source you can name? What desire or fear makes the claim attractive? What does the text call people back to?
Find one thing people can hold. Pointer’s library visit worked because the evidence was in front of people instead of described to them. Choose one book, document or passage you can actually put in someone’s hands. He describes “strategically putting resources in people’s hands” as one of his main tools, and he leans on ancient sources, including African church fathers such as Augustine and Tertullian. His reasoning is that if someone claims Christianity is hostile to Black people, then “let’s go back to the African persons who shaped Christian thought and let’s see what they had to say about Christ.”
Practice the answer out loud. One person states the claim as persuasively as they can, the way an honest believer in it would. Another responds in under three minutes. Then switch roles. Afterward, ask whether the response kept the meekness and fear that 1 Peter 3:15 requires, and whether the person stating the claim felt understood or merely beaten.
Facilitator note: if your group cannot agree on a source, or one step stays unclear, leave it unclear. Write down what you would still need to find out. A plan with honest gaps is more useful than a polished answer resting on something nobody checked.
Build it into the calendar
One worked claim is a lesson. A habit needs a cycle. Here is one way to set it up, which you can adapt to the size of your church.
- Collect. Keep a standing list of questions and claims people bring up. Pointer says a group of young adults comes to him after every Bible study, and that “people have questions about these areas, and they just want clarity.” Make sure those questions get written down somewhere so they don’t disappear.
- Prepare. Once a month, one leader or trained member takes the next claim on the list through the five steps before teaching it.
- Teach. Give the claim a session in a setting the church already has, such as a midweek study, a Sunday class or a small group meeting. Adding it to an existing gathering is what keeps it from becoming the occasional seminar this guide is trying to replace.
- Hand off. End every session with one resource people can take home.
- Linger. Plan for the informal conversation afterward. Pointer counts formal and informal conversations as one ongoing work.
Include every age group. Asked whether older churchgoers also absorb these ideas, Pointer said “it’s not age restricted at all.” His young adults show the most curiosity, but his older members are benefiting from the study too.
Test the plan against two objections
First: surely every believer can look this up on their own. Pointer’s diagnosis of individualism answers this. He describes a church that moved from the community of Acts 2 to an institution and then to the individual, so that each person says in effect, “I am my own individual personal and private theologian.” His remedy: “Let’s leap over institutionalism.” Then: “Let’s get back to community.” Ask of your plan: does it pass knowledge from person to person, or does it just give each member a better search engine?
Second: a congregation that worships expressively won’t take to this. Pointer rejects that assumption. He notes that Black worship is not monolithic, and he says “Emotion does not negate intelligence.” Ask whether your plan treats the people who shout and the people who read as two separate groups. In most congregations they are often the same people.
A third limit is worth naming. Pointer is describing what he does as a pastor, and nobody has run a study testing which methods work best. Your own church will show you what works there. Plan to review the cycle after three months.
Questions for the group
- Pointer says, “I can’t just say the Bible is the Bible for the Bible tells me.” He adds that if Scripture is God’s word, “if that’s what the Bible is, then it should be able to stand under scrutiny, under questions.” How would your church respond if a member said this out loud in a class?
- Look again at the map you drew at the start. Which gap would the monthly cycle close first, and which would it leave untouched?
- Of the five steps, which would be hardest for you to lead, and why?
- Asking what desire a claim satisfies can feel personal. How could you raise that question about a claim without implying that the people who believe it are acting in bad faith?
- Who in your congregation is already doing some of this work informally? What would change if the church recognized it openly?
- Is there a claim your church has avoided naming? What makes it hard to address?
A first move
Put your opening map next to your plan. Choose one claim, one date and one person to prepare it. Write those three things on the same page as the questions you answered at the start. Then, in the weeks before that date, pay attention to who comes up to you after a study or a service with a question. Those conversations will show you whether the habit is starting to form.
