A Study on Vashti, Esther, and the Identity God Gives Women
Jude 3 Project | Study Guide | The Bible and Interpretation
DISCERNMENT STUDY: This guide does not give you a formula. It gives you a text, two women who moved in opposite directions, and questions that will not let you off easy.
The Big Question
The Book of Esther opens with one woman's refusal and the chaos it creates. Queen Vashti says no to the king. The empire responds with a royal edict. The overreaction is the tell: her advisors understood that one woman exercising her agency could change what other women thought was possible.
That is the question this study sits with: how do women in the Bible gain power? And what kind of power is it? Not formal title, not voted authority, but the power that comes from knowing who you are and acting from that place, whatever the cost and whatever the circumstances.
Vashti paid a throne. Esther risked her life. Both moved from the same ground.
Key Takeaways
- Vashti's refusal was not defiance for its own sake. She was hosting her own gathering and refused to be put on display as a trophy. She acted from a settled identity as someone made in God's image.
- The empire's overreaction, a kingdom-wide decree requiring all women to obey their husbands, tells you exactly how much power they feared. The suppression of women's voices is historically a measure of how threatening that voice was perceived to be.
- Both Vashti and Esther act from the same foundation: a refusal to be defined entirely by the expectations of those in power over them. They express it differently because their circumstances demand different things.
- The Bible does not resolve the tension between asserting dignity now and enduring for future influence. Both are present in the text. Both cost something. The question is which the moment calls for.
- The imago Dei, Genesis 1:27, is not a spiritual metaphor. It is the ground from which both women move, and it is the ground from which any honest reading of women in Scripture has to start.
Scripture to Sit With
Esther 1:1-22 — Read the whole chapter. Notice what the king is doing in the first verses: a party of wealth and display that runs for weeks. Notice the precise moment of his request to Vashti and what she is doing when he summons her. Notice the advisors' response. The text is showing you something about excess, fear, and the specific nature of power. Let it show you.
Esther 4:13-16 — Mordecai tells Esther she has not come to this position for her own comfort: who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this. Esther's response is important: she does not immediately act. Her first move is to call the whole community to fast for three days. She goes with a village behind her. That is not weakness. That is how power actually works in Esther.
Genesis 1:27 — So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. This verse is the foundation. The dignity of women in Scripture is not derived from their usefulness to men. It is written into creation. To refuse to be treated as less than a person is to insist on what God already declared.
Judges 4:4-9 — Deborah judged Israel and led Barak into battle. She did not wait to be invited into the story. The pattern of women exercising real authority, strategic wisdom, and spiritual leadership runs through the whole Old Testament as a thread, not as an exception.
Voices Worth Hearing
Yana Connor on what Vashti represents:
"What Queen Vashti for me sort of represents is not allowing anyone to treat you as less than you are. If you believe that you are a person created in the image of God, then you move in the world and demand that people treat you that way." — Yana Connor

Dr. Cynthia James on why the empire's fear tells us something about women's power:
"How amazing it is that others see women sometimes with more power than we may see ourselves. Her one action could send a universal ripple, and I don't know that we think of ourselves as people who really move the world with a choice or not." — Dr. Cynthia James

Yana Connor on the particular cost of being Black and female in ministry spaces:
"I live in a fallen world. But God created me to be black and female, and that was a very intentional choice. In that, I need to bear both the burdens and the joy of being black and female in America. Sometimes I have to put the interest of others before my own." — Yana Connor

Sherelle Ducksworth, on how the Bible has been used against women and what faithful reading requires, says that naming misuse honestly makes a witness more credible, not less. You do not have to protect Christianity from what Christians have done with it. That principle applies directly to the history of using Vashti as a warning rather than reading her as a woman who knew whose image she bore.

Dr. Leo Percer makes a foundational interpretive point that matters for this text: a verse without its context is a pretext. The traditional reading of Vashti as a warning about disobedient wives requires ignoring what she is being asked to do and why the advisors respond with a kingdom-wide edict. The context changes what the text is showing you.

A Scripture Movement: Reading Esther 1 Slowly
Before the group discussion, read Esther 1 out loud. Assign someone to read the king's lines. Someone to read the advisors' lines. Someone to narrate. Let the text breathe.
When you finish, before anyone says anything, write one word that describes what you just heard.
Then ask: what does the text seem to be on Vashti's side about? What is harder to tell?
Hold both before you talk.
Discussion Questions
1. Vashti's refusal cost her the throne. Can you think of a time when you or someone you respect said no to something at real personal cost, not out of stubbornness but out of a conviction about dignity? What did it cost, and what did it protect?
2. Dr. James raises the question of when it is wiser to endure a wrong for the sake of staying in the room and building influence, versus when to push back immediately. How do you think about that tension in your own life? What factors actually matter when you are deciding?
3. The king's advisors feared that Vashti's one act would ripple through the whole empire. When have you seen the agency of one person, especially someone without formal power, open a door for others around them?
4. Yana Connor describes having to navigate spaces that were not built with her in mind, choosing when to assert and when to absorb, and calling it a dying to self for the sake of others. Does that framing resonate with you? Where does it feel right, and where does it feel like too much to ask?
5. The teachers see both Vashti and Esther as acting from the same identity, just expressing it differently in different circumstances. Who in your community is exercising that kind of settled power right now? Are you seeing it for what it is?
6. What would it look like for you, this week, to move from the imago Dei as your foundation rather than from what the people around you expect from you? Be specific.
Practice: One Conviction, One Situation
Read Esther 1 and 2 on your own this week, slowly. Notice what the text says and what it does not say.
Then write down one conviction about your identity as someone made in God's image that you want to act from more consistently.
Then ask: is there a situation in your life right now where that conviction needs to show up? Not a demand you are owed, but a dignity you are called to carry.
You do not have to make a dramatic move. Sometimes the move is small. But make it from that ground.
Go Deeper
This study draws from the Humble Hermeneutic episode 'How Did Women in the Bible Gain Power?' (May 3, 2021), in which Dr. Cynthia James and Yana Connor walk through the opening chapters of Esther. Listen at humblehermeneutic.podbean.com. For a companion conversation, search the Jude 3 Project catalog for episodes on what the Bible says about women, the Deborah narrative, and the experience of Black women in ministry. Dr. Cynthia James and Yana Connor continue the Esther series in subsequent Humble Hermeneutic episodes.
A Closing Word
Neither Vashti nor Esther had ideal circumstances. Vashti had a king who wanted to use her. Esther had a king who could have her killed for approaching without permission. Both moved anyway. Both from the same ground: I am made in God's image, and I will act like it.
That is not a formula. It is a foundation. And it is available to anyone who believes the first chapter of Genesis.
