The Old Testament came together over many centuries. People wrote events down so they would be remembered. Later authors received those earlier writings, arranged them and wove them into one long story, until the collection reached its final three-part shape. That history weakens the Bible’s authority only if you assume a divine word has to arrive with no human hands on it. Tim Mackie, co-founder of BibleProject, argues that the Bible itself never makes that assumption. The human story of how the text was made is part of the way God gave it.
Getting there takes a few steps in the right order. First, we need a more accurate picture of what ancient Israel was handling. Then we need a model for how the books grew. Only then does the theological question make sense: how can a text be shaped by people across generations and still be God’s word?
What Picture of the Bible Are Most People Starting With?
Many Christians carry an unspoken image of how Scripture was written. A prophet sits down, the Spirit comes on him, and the words pour out in one sitting. Mackie names the problem with this image directly: “The Bible is not like a Word document that you sit down and type.”
Part of the confusion comes from our technology. We meet the Bible as a single bound volume or a single app, with everything present at once. For most of Israel’s history, nobody encountered the Scriptures like that. The bound book with a spine came into use only around the time of Jesus and after. Before that, the Scriptures were a collection of scrolls, and the collection grew. The scrolls were not simply stacked up one by one, either. What was inside them was itself being shaped as the collection got larger.
Why Does It Matter That “Book” in the Bible Usually Means Scroll?
The English word book appears often in our Bibles, but in the Old Testament it refers to a scroll. Mackie suggests translations might serve readers better if they simply said scroll.
With that in mind, look at what Mackie identifies as the first mention of the Bible being written within the Bible’s own story. It is not the Ten Commandments. It comes right after Israel defeats the Amalekites, the battle in which Moses holds up his arms on the hill. Then God tells Moses to record what happened: “Write this for a memorial in a book” (Exodus 17:14). The “book” is a scroll, and the reason for writing is remembrance.
Mackie observes that the moment “feels mundane.” There are no tablets from heaven and no vision. As he puts it, “It’s for historical memory.” God wants his people not to forget what he did to deliver them.
That gives us a category for much of the Old Testament. A great deal of it is preserved memory: the story of a people and how they understood what God was doing in their history. It also explains how material older than Moses got into the Torah. Genesis covers events long before his lifetime. Moses, or later authors who worked on the Torah after him, received those memories from earlier generations.
What Does the Family Quilt Picture Explain?
Here is the model Mackie uses in his classrooms. The biblical books, he says, “come into existence much more like a family quilt.” A family quilt holds pieces from your mother, your grandmother, your great-grandmother and further back. Some of those pieces arrive already joined together, like the stories about Abraham or the stories about Jacob. Someone then sets those finished sections beside other sections: Jacob next to Joseph, Joseph next to the Exodus. The larger pattern is someone’s handiwork.
That is how a collection with many sources can read as one story. In its grand structure, the Hebrew Bible is a single huge narrative. It runs from the beginning, through the exile and the return from exile, to the hope for the Messiah and a new covenant. Unity of that kind requires arrangement, and arrangement is what the quilt-maker supplies.
The quilt also corrects a common mistake about dating. Readers who hear that a book reached its final form after the exile sometimes conclude that its stories were invented after the exile. Mackie’s answer: “The date of the final form of the quilt is not the same thing as the date of individual pieces within the quilt.” A late finished collection does not make every story in it late.
The books even talk openly about their sources. The writer of Kings keeps pointing the reader elsewhere. After recounting Ahab’s reign, the text asks whether the rest of Ahab’s acts “are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?” (1 Kings 22:39). This author is not trying to tell everything. He is selecting material to make a theological argument about Israel’s monarchy, which in Mackie’s reading is that it failed. Selection and arrangement are part of the message.
The editorial work continued late. Probably after the period of Ezra and Nehemiah, the people contributing to the collection stop being named. Mackie thinks that fits: “They’re not trying to draw attention to themselves, they’re trying to pass on the quilt.”
Every analogy breaks somewhere, and this one breaks in an obvious place. A family quilt is a purely human craft. Its makers might share no plan, and nobody claims a quilt speaks for God. The quilt helps us picture the human process: many hands, inherited pieces, a final arrangement. By itself it says nothing about God’s role. That needs a different kind of explanation.
If People Did the Sewing, Where Does God Come In?
Mackie thinks modern Western Christians often tolerate unhelpful thinking here. The common view, as he describes it, is that “if the Bible is God’s word, that means that it has to have come to us with little or no human agency.” Human involvement then has to be minimized to protect divine authority. Mackie calls this an unnecessary mistake that will come back to bite us, because “we’re introducing a division that the Bible itself never makes.”
His alternative is a clear definition:
“What inspiration means is that God guided these people so that what they wrote of their own will and intention is what God wanted his people to hear.”
— Tim Mackie
The human will and God’s purpose are not competing for the same space. The authors chose, selected and wrote. God guided them so that the result was his word to his people.
A predictable objection follows. Doesn’t the Bible describe prophets being overpowered by the Spirit? It does, a few times, and Mackie grants those moments matter. But he adds: “There are a handful of times where that happens. And those are never stories about the writing of the Bible.”
When the Bible describes its own writing, the authors are fully themselves. Jeremiah 36 is a whole chapter about producing the scroll of Jeremiah:
“Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the LORD, which he had spoken unto him, upon a roll of a book” (Jeremiah 36:4).
Of Jeremiah and his scribe, Mackie says, “They’re in full control of their faculties,” and “they’re writing and collecting, and they’re making the quilt.” Later the king burns the scroll, and Jeremiah has a new one written. The chapter ends by noting that “there were added besides unto them many like words” (Jeremiah 36:32). The text itself shows a scroll being rewritten and expanded under God’s direction.
The same holds when the Spirit comes on someone. In Mackie’s reading, the Spirit’s presence “doesn’t make them less human, and it doesn’t bypass their humanity.” Instead, “those are stories of how they become fully human. They become fully themselves.” Micah is his example:
“But truly I am full of power by the spirit of the LORD, and of judgment, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his transgression, and to Israel his sin” (Micah 3:8).
Being filled with the Spirit does not turn Micah into a passive channel. It sends him into pointed public critique in his own voice.
To hold these together, Mackie reaches for the confession Christians already make about Jesus: fully human and fully divine. We do not protect Christ’s divinity by shrinking his humanity, and the same logic applies to Scripture. This comparison has a limit too. The Bible is not God in the flesh, and Christians do not worship it. The comparison makes one narrow point: two kinds of agency can be fully present at once without one canceling the other. Taken that far and no further, it removes the false choice between a human Bible and a divine one.
What Do the Dead Sea Scrolls Add?
The hardest practical form of the question involves numbers. In some Old Testament passages, numbers appear not to line up. A reader who believes the text dropped out of heaven untouched has no way to account for that. Mackie agrees that this belief cannot survive the evidence, and he insists that one can “still hold a high view of the Bible” as a divine word anyway.
His graduate research was in the Dead Sea Scrolls and the early translations of the Bible, so he speaks about the copying history from close study. He describes that history as “even more complex” than the books’ formation. The scrolls let us trace biblical manuscripts back to somewhere in the third or fourth century before Christ. Asked what they show, he does not offer a tidy picture: “It’s beautiful, but it’s complicated.”
The scrolls also show what the community behind them treasured. According to Mackie, the people who produced the Dead Sea Scrolls spoke of their Scriptures in a three-part shape, the same shape Jesus would later reference. Yet among the scrolls there are as many copies of the book of Enoch as of Jeremiah. Ancient communities clearly valued writings alongside the Scriptures. Mackie’s quilt helps here as well. Enoch, in his view, is a remarkable book, but its design does not weave it into the quilt of the Scriptures the way the other books are woven in.
For Mackie, studying all this changed how he saw the evidence: “It stopped being a scandal to me. And it started becoming this really beautiful heritage of how these texts were treasured and passed down.” The manuscripts show communities that cared enough to copy, preserve and pass these writings on across generations. They do not show a text that never needed human care.
The evidence has a real limit, and it should be stated. Manuscripts can show how carefully a text was handed down and how it changed. They cannot prove by themselves that God inspired it. Inspiration is a theological claim, and Christians believe it on other grounds, above all because of Jesus. What the history can do is remove a false reason for doubt. If your faith depends on Scripture having no human history, every discovered variant becomes a threat. If inspiration always worked through human history, variants are what you would expect to find. Mackie’s summary is blunt. You need it to have dropped out of heaven, “which it clearly didn’t,” and that is no problem, because “the Bible never claims that it dropped out of heaven.” The Jude 3 Project holds that taking the Bible seriously means studying it honestly, not defensively. The formation story is where that commitment gets tested, and it holds.
Why Start With Jesus at All?
Most people do not make a habit of reading ancient texts from the other side of the world. Christians do it because, in Mackie’s words, “Jesus appealed to his Bible as the way to understand who he was.” Jesus did not treat the Scriptures as a loose pile of scrolls. He spoke of everything “written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me” (Luke 24:44). That matches the three-part shape of the Hebrew Scriptures, with the Psalms at the head of the third section.
So the formation question is not a side issue for specialists. The Scriptures Jesus quoted to explain himself were the finished quilt: many pieces, many hands, one story moving toward a new covenant. It is the story of Israel’s repeated failure to keep the covenant and God’s refusal to break it. It ends with the prophets’ hope that God would change his people’s hearts, as Jeremiah and Ezekiel announce (Jeremiah 31:33; Ezekiel 36:26). Jesus took that story as his own and claimed to bring it to its goal.
That is the deepest answer to whether the history undermines the authority. The Lord Christians follow received these Scriptures as God’s word after their long human formation, not in spite of it. Every hand that stitched the quilt worked before he quoted it. If Jesus could read that inherited, arranged and carefully copied collection as the word of his Father, his followers do not need a different kind of Bible to trust it.
