A standalone study on how the Black church carried a people through the Great Migration.
The big question
We often picture the Black church as a place of worship on Sunday. Dr. Charlie Dates asks us to see something larger. When hundreds of thousands of Black Southerners arrived in Northern cities during the Great Migration with nowhere to live and no one to help, the church became their first social safety net. This study asks what it means that ministry, in that moment, looked like finding people housing and work.
Key takeaways
- The Great Migration brought hundreds of thousands of Black Southerners north into hard conditions.
- Black churches met them with practical help: housing, schooling, and work.
- Olivet Baptist hired social workers, treating material care as part of pastoral work.
- The church was the one institution that received Black migrants when others would not.
- Dates argues there was no Black community in these cities without the Black church.
Scripture to sit with
James 1:27. Pure religion is to care for orphans and widows in their distress. Faith shows up as practical care.
Acts 2:44-45. The early church shared so that no one was in need. A pattern the Black church repeated.
Matthew 25:35-36. I was a stranger and you welcomed me. The migrant is the stranger Jesus names.
Galatians 6:10. Do good to everyone, especially the household of faith. Care begins close to home.
Quotes worth discussing
Dates says, “Dr. L.K. Williams and the Olivet Church employed two social workers before they employed other pastors.”
On the stakes, Dates says, “Without the black church, there was no such thing as a black community.”
Discussion questions
- What does it change to learn that a church hired social workers before more pastors?
- Where in your city do people arrive with nowhere to land, and who helps them?
- Is meeting material needs part of your church’s ministry, or separate from it? Should it be?
- What would it look like for your church to be an oasis for someone starting over?
- How does this history change the way you value the Black church?

A closing reflection
Find out one practical need in your own congregation or neighborhood this week, a ride, a meal, help with a form, and meet it. The Black church teaches that the gospel has hands. Lend yours.
