Ask where Christian doctrine was worked out in its first five centuries, and the map keeps pointing to Africa. Christianity began in Judea, not Europe, and pastors in Alexandria, Carthage and Hippo did much of the work that taught the church how to read Scripture and how to state what it believes. The usual timeline hides this by jumping from the apostles straight to the Protestant Reformers of the sixteenth century.
That jump also feeds a familiar charge: that Christianity is a white man’s religion. If the story starts with the Reformers, nobody looks at what came before them. Dr. Joel Elowsky, who teaches historical theology at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri, has spent years in that earlier period. His account makes two claims. Many of the people who defined early Christian thought were Africans, and they did that work as pastors.
How Did Researchers Notice How African the Early Church Was?
They noticed it by counting. Elowsky worked as a researcher on the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture, a series that gathers what the ancient church said about the biblical text. At some point the team looked at whom they were actually citing. He reports that “at least 40 to 50% of the authors that we were quoting were actually early African theologians.”
The way that finding was reached matters. Nobody set out to prove an African thesis. The team set out to collect the church’s earliest readings of Scripture, and African voices kept turning up because they were the ones the early church had produced and preserved. The observation came first. The project on early African Christianity came afterward.
Elowsky frames the lesson with a line he has also heard from colleagues: “I always like to say that the Holy Spirit has a history.” The usual telling skips centuries. In his words, “We don’t just jump from the first century to the 16th century, the 19th century, that there’s this whole other part of history that has kind of been neglected.” Some accounts of Christianity in Africa begin with the missionaries of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The record begins well over a thousand years earlier.
Where Does the African Story Begin?
It begins before the church existed. Africa had a large Jewish population well before Jesus, and according to Elowsky, Jews in Alexandria produced the Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures, the Septuagint, beginning in the third century BC. That translation became the Bible of much of the early church, so one of the first books Christians read was the work of African Jews.
The Gospels and Acts keep Africa in view. Among the crowd at Pentecost, Luke lists pilgrims from “in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene” (Acts 2:10). Mark records that the soldiers compelled “one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by” to carry the cross of Jesus (Mark 15:21). Elowsky observes that people often forget Simon was an African, one of the last people Jesus encountered in his earthly life. In Acts 8:26–39, an Ethiopian court official reads Isaiah on the road home and is baptized. These are narrative details. They describe rather than command, but they show that the first-century writers did not treat Africa as the far edge of the gospel’s reach.
Inside North Africa, the first written record of Christians, by Elowsky’s account, is the narrative of the Scillitan martyrs, which he dates to about AD 180. For many regions of the ancient world, he adds, a written record that early would be remarkable.
What Happened in Alexandria and Carthage?
By the late second and third centuries, two African cities had become centers of Christian thought. Of Alexandria, Elowsky says, “I would say it even rivaled Rome.” Clement of Alexandria taught there, followed by Origen. Further west sat Carthage, home to Tertullian, whose life Elowsky dates to roughly 160 to 220.
When Origen’s father was taken away and martyred, the young Origen wanted to volunteer for martyrdom himself. His mother stopped him by hiding his clothes, knowing he was too modest to go out in public without them.
Origen also pressed an argument that would echo for centuries. Many of Christianity’s opponents in that era held to fatalism, the belief that everything is determined by fate, which let them blame God for evil. Origen answered by stressing human free will: humanity is responsible for evil, through the choice in the garden that brought sin into the world. His emphasis on the will was a defense of God’s goodness against a specific pagan challenge.
In the middle of the third century, Carthage produced Cyprian, who became a bishop late in life while the church was under persecution. He survived the persecution under the emperor Decius and was martyred later. In between, he faced one of the hardest pastoral questions of his generation: what to do with believers who denied Christ under threat and then wanted to come back.
Novatian, another theologian of the period, held that such people could not be readmitted at all. Cyprian looked for what Elowsky calls “a very pastoral approach” to bringing them back in, while still dealing honestly with what they had done. The church’s long practice of restoring the fallen owes much to a bishop in Carthage working out what to do with real people in his own congregation.
How Large Was the African Church?
For skeptics who want hard data, Elowsky points to the surviving records of African church councils. A council around 220, he says, already carried the signatures of about 70 bishops, and he suspects only about half the bishops attended. A council in 256 had 87. By the early fifth century, more than 600 bishops gathered in Carthage. The records are published, including in the fourteenth volume of the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, so these figures can be checked.
The counts establish something real but limited. They show a church organized across many towns, with enough congregations to need hundreds of bishops. They do not tell us how many believers each bishop served, since dioceses differed widely, and the guess that half stayed home is Elowsky’s estimate, not a recorded fact.
Elowsky goes further and argues that Africa set the pattern for councils across the wider church. At one Carthage council, which he places in either 411 or 419 without settling which, the bishops produced the African canons, rules for church life that were distributed through the churches of the Roman Empire as a model. That influence is his historical judgment, and the uncertain date is a reminder to hold the details loosely while the broad picture stands. He also mentions Victor, a bishop of Rome born in the Roman province of Africa.
What Did the Fourth Century Add?
The fourth century brought the fight over who Jesus is: how to speak of the person of Christ and his relationship to the Father. Athanasius of Alexandria was a strong defender of Christ’s full deity. The Council of Nicaea did not meet in Africa, but Elowsky notes that some of its key players were African, Athanasius among them. The way Christians still confess the Son as truly God carries the mark of that Alexandrian bishop.
The same century shows the faith moving south. Egyptian monasticism developed, and Frumentius was ordained the first bishop of Ethiopia by Athanasius. A bishop in Ethiopia by then, Elowsky reasons, means Christianity was already present there earlier. He describes the Ethiopian church as carrying many elements of Judaism, along with traditions tying it to the Queen of Sheba.
Why Does Augustine Change the Picture?
If one name breaks the Europe-first timeline, it is Augustine of Hippo. Elowsky likes to ask students how much time Augustine spent outside Africa. They guess twenty, thirty, even forty years. By his count, it was about five years of a 75-year life, spent in Rome and Milan. Augustine was born in Thagaste in North Africa and served as bishop in Hippo. His works on the Trinity, his Confessions and The City of God shaped the Middle Ages and the Reformation and are still read in the church today.
Augustine also took up the question Origen had pressed about the will, and he came down differently. At first he spoke a good deal about the will’s role in conversion. Then he engaged the teaching of Pelagius, a monk from Britain. In Elowsky’s summary, Augustine came to see that “when we put too much emphasis on the will, what we end up doing is putting our salvation in our own hands rather than in God’s hands.” So he stressed the bondage of the will and God’s election and saving grace.
Here the chronology corrects a modern habit. People sometimes ask whether the African fathers leaned Calvinist or Arminian, which projects Reformation labels backward onto people who lived a millennium earlier. They would not have known those names. Yet the question is on the right track in one sense, Elowsky says: “You can indeed trace some of these disputes back to the early church.” Origen and Augustine had already staked out positions in Africa, and later theologians reached back to them.
That inheritance does not settle the debate. Faithful Christians still read passages like Romans 9 and Ephesians 1 differently, and both sides can claim parts of the African record. What the history changes is the setting. A believer arguing about grace and the will today is joining a conversation African pastors started.
Were These Christians African in Any Meaningful Sense?
The strongest objection deserves a direct answer. North Africa in this period was a set of Roman provinces. Its Christian writers wrote in Latin and Greek, and they thought of themselves as citizens of an empire, not as members of a modern racial group. Calling them African, a skeptic might say, imports a modern category into an ancient province.
Part of that objection is right, and it helps to separate two claims. One is about geography: these people were born, lived, preached and were buried in Africa. That is what the councils, martyr accounts and writings plainly show. The other is about ancestry and appearance, and the sources do not record skin color. Latin and Greek tell us about the language of the empire, not the ancestry of the people using it, just as English-speaking churches today are not all English.
On ancestry, Elowsky offers a judgment, not a proof. He argues that most early Mediterranean Christians were probably not white Western Europeans, and that North Africa in the first five centuries held Egyptians, Ethiopians, Nubians, Berbers, Greeks, Romans and Jews from Cyrenaica and Alexandria. That list is a reasonable picture of a mixed region, but it rests on his reading of the period. What does not rest on judgment is the geographic fact, and it is enough to answer the charge. A faith whose leading early teachers lived in Alexandria, Carthage and Hippo was never a European possession.
Elowsky himself refuses to make the case turn on color. Christianity, he says, has “not been about race or color. It’s been about Christ.” The history does not show that the early church belonged to one people. It shows that it belonged to many, and that Africa sat near its center.
The record has gaps, and he names them. Christianity likely followed the Nile and the trade routes south from Ethiopia into what is now Sudan, carried by traveling monks. How far south it reached, and when, cannot yet be stated with confidence. That remains a task for researchers working through the archaeological evidence. A responsible account claims Ethiopia and stops where the evidence stops.
What Difference Does It Make That They Were Pastors?
Elowsky locates the African fathers’ key contributions in the doctrine of Christ, the doctrine of the Holy Spirit and the doctrine of the church. Then he adds what holds those together: they were pastors serving the church. Their theology, he says, “wasn’t some kind of mental exercise or academic exercise. It was really very much how they lived out their faith and life.”
That changes how their work reads. Cyprian’s teaching on restoring the fallen came from a bishop with lapsed members at his door. Origen’s defense of the will answered opponents who blamed God for evil. Augustine wrote on grace as a pastor who wanted his people’s assurance to rest on God and not on themselves.
Elowsky has seen that connection come alive in Africa today, where martyr stories are repeating themselves under groups like Boko Haram. Teaching in Nigeria, he had students take parts and read the account of the Scillitan martyrs aloud, using the martyrs’ own names. They threw themselves into it, he recalls, because “for them it wasn’t just a story. It was something they might actually be called out to live in their own faith and life.”
The story that skips from the apostles to the Reformation loses more than a list of names. It loses the place where the church learned to confess Christ as fully God, to restore those who had fallen, to argue honestly about grace and to govern itself in councils. Elowsky’s closing hope was that churches in Africa and elsewhere would recognize “what a wonderful gift Africa has been to world Christianity,” and would expect to hear from African believers again. Read this way, African Christians in the twenty-first century are not newcomers admitted to a European faith. They are heirs of some of its oldest teachers.
