Ask people who they are and most will hand you a list: a job, a hometown, a church, a role in the family, a few labels picked up along the way. Press past the list and the answer gets thin. That thinness shows how identity actually works. You cannot read yourself off your own surface, and turning inward alone will not finish the job. Who you are begins with who God is, and you come to see it through relationship, with him first and then with other people. The self is real. It just cannot explain itself.
Why Can’t You Find Yourself by Looking Inward?
Much of the advice about identity follows a familiar order. First you figure out who you are, privately, by looking within. Then, once you have a settled self, you go out and find people who fit it. Kobe Campbell, a licensed clinical mental health counselor who specializes in trauma and faith, thinks that order is backward. She said many of us “have been kind of coaxed into trying to define ourselves in a silo and then engaging community.” In her view, community is where you discover the self in the first place.
Campbell admitted the question had kept her up at 3 a.m., wondering whether she was having an existential crisis. Where she landed is worth following closely, because it starts with God. Christians like to say God would be good even if he never did anything for us. Campbell pushed on that: “But we would never know he was good if he never did anything for us, right.” Even God’s character, as far as we can know it, comes to us through how he acts toward us.
If that holds for knowing God, it holds for knowing ourselves. Campbell’s own anchor is that she is loved by God, and she was candid about where that knowledge came from: “I am beloved and everything flows from that. But I would never know I was beloved if God had not encountered me, which means I only have access to the reality of my identity because I was in relationship with someone other than me.”
Being loved is a fact that arrives from outside. Nobody declares themselves beloved and makes it true. The New Testament puts the order plainly: “We love him, because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19). In its setting, John is explaining where Christian love comes from, and his answer is that God moves first. Campbell’s point fits that pattern. The most important thing about you is given, and the rest of life is learning to live from it. Her summary is simple: “There’s no way to know who you are without being connected to someone outside of who you are.”
Why Start With Who God Is?
Vince Bantu, who teaches at Fuller Theological Seminary and pastors in St. Louis, began even further back. His first move was to say “that who we are has to start with who God is.” He meant the specific God of Christian confession: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, one God in three persons, co-equal and co-eternal. The Jude 3 Project teaches that doctrine as essential, and Bantu drew a practical point from it. The persons of the Trinity are known in relation to one another. As he put it, “A father is a father because there’s a son. The son is a son because there’s a father.”
From there he made the step that matters for the rest of us: “And so God is a relational God, and we also are relational people.” If the God who made us has never been a solitary individual, it would be strange for the people he made to be fully knowable as solitary individuals.
Bantu tied this to the creation account:
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them” (Genesis 1:27).
Later he drew the conclusion directly: “I cannot know who I am if I don’t know who God is, because I was made in the image of God.” An image only makes sense in light of what it images. A reflection that ignores the thing it reflects will stay confused about itself.
Fairness to the text matters here. Genesis 1 does not spell out exactly what the image of God consists of, and Christians have read it in more than one way. Some stress human capacities like reason, some stress the human calling to rule creation on God’s behalf, and some stress relationship. Bantu’s relational reading is one serious line of interpretation among several. What the passage plainly does establish is enough for his main claim: human beings are defined by reference to God before they are defined by anything else.
He also reached for a concept many people of African descent already know, ubuntu, which he described as a Zulu concept carried in a proverb that “means a person is a person through other people.” For Bantu, this is an ancestral insight that agrees with what Scripture shows about a relational God. He spelled out the consequence: “I can’t understand my identity as an isolated entity.” He also placed relationships in order. People matter, and so does the creation itself, but “first and foremost, I am who I am because of who I am in standing with God.”
Is It Wrong to Want to Define Yourself?
Wanting to know yourself is fine. The trouble starts when knowing yourself turns into authoring yourself. Dr. Malik Blade, CEO of the Whole Brother Mission, a nonprofit that connects men with mental health professionals, named that line. He noted that people answer the identity question very differently depending on what they believe, and that for Christians the starting point is “understanding that we are created beings rather than the creator.”
That sounds like a small theological footnote until you see what Blade did with it. He said, “One of the ways we misunderstand who we are is attempting to take full control of and orchestrate our lives.” When we do that, he said, “We’re attempting to be gods of our own lives.” Blade affirmed human freedom and then set it in its proper place: “While we do have free will, it’s important for us to understand our placement in this whole cosmos, which is created beings.”
The distinction is between having a will and being the source of your own meaning. You make real choices, and they shape you. You did not invent your existence, your worth or the kind of creature you are. Trying to supply all of that yourself hands you a job only God can do, and then leaves you feeling like a failure when you cannot do it. Accepting that you are a creature tells you where your weight is supposed to rest.
What If the People Around You Get It Wrong?
Here is the strongest objection to everything above. If identity comes through relationship, then people who lie to you can bend your identity. Families, churches and institutions have told plenty of people that they are less than they are. Doesn’t knowing yourself through others just mean letting the loudest voices decide?
Bantu and Blade both answered from experience. Bantu described his teenage years in a poor, under-resourced neighborhood in St. Louis. The Christians he saw either came in from outside to help, or drove in for Sunday service and left. His question was less about who he was than about whether who he was belonged in the church at all. He put it bluntly: “Is who I am acceptable before God?” The message he absorbed was “I have to change who I am before I even step into a church.”
Blade described the same distortion from the counseling room. He once worked with a wife who had no peace because she kept measuring herself, as a wife and mother, against the women in her church. Their family patterns differed for historical and economic reasons, and a cultural pattern had been presented to her as the biblical standard. Blade’s conclusion: “We need to understand the differences between what God said and what they said.” He also described seminary students whose faith had been tied so closely to one cultural setting that, in his words, “when they felt disowned by white people, they also felt disowned by God.”
That last line shows exactly where things go wrong. Relationships are meant to be the place where you come to see who you are before God. When a community takes God’s place as the final authority on your identity, losing its approval feels like losing him. So the safeguard is an order of authority. God’s word about you comes first, and people are where you hear it, test it and learn to live it.
Bantu found help in Acts 10. Peter has a vision of animals declared fit to eat, and he refuses because he has never eaten anything unclean. Then a voice answers: “What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common” (Acts 10:15). In its setting, the vision is about food laws and, more deeply, about Peter’s refusal to welcome Gentiles into the people of God. Bantu was not claiming the verse was written about his neighborhood. He drew a parallel. If God refused to let Peter treat people as unacceptable for reasons God himself had set aside, then a teenager does not have to earn his way past someone else’s standard of respectability before God will receive him.
Bantu’s way out of that crisis ran straight through people. He said seeing believers who looked and talked like him, being discipled in college by someone with a similar story, and joining a church that prioritized its most marginalized members changed things. In his words, “Through that church experience, through seeing models and through discipleship and through the word, that was what really ministered to me and my identity crisis.” Bad relationships wounded him. Faithful relationships, together with Scripture, healed him.
Does Your Identity Ever Settle?
If you are waiting for a single moment when your identity snaps into focus for good, Campbell offers a more honest picture. She said she is still working out how her experience of God fits the Christian spaces around her. In private prayer she meets God as tender and kind, and she has sometimes been told that this means she is not serious enough. Her resolution was to trust the God she actually meets: “We have not exhausted all the ways that an infinite God can be experienced, an infinite God can be experienced infinitely.” She named the temptation she was resisting: “Sometimes we wanna fit into the culture of Christianity, but sometimes we feel like we have to abandon the reality of our experience with Christ.”
That is the same principle applied from the inside. Community helps you see yourself, but the pressure to fit in can also tempt you to copy someone else’s walk with God and call it your own. Received identity leaves room for the particular way God has met you. Growing into it takes years, and it is ordinary to still be wrestling.
Where Do You Begin?
If the self cannot be known alone, the practical question shifts. Instead of asking how to look harder inside, ask: Whose voice am I treating as the final word about me? For some people that voice is a boss, a parent, an old church, a social group or their own harshest thoughts. Put God’s word about you first: you are his creature, made in his image, and loved before you did anything.
Then put yourself where that word can be heard and tested. Read Scripture as something spoken to you. Look for friends, mentors and a church willing to tell you the truth without asking you to become someone else before you walk in. Notice where you are mirroring another person’s identity in place of growing into your own. Campbell put her version of the goal in one sentence: “My job is to be the beloved and to love God.” The roles you hold will rise and fall around that, and none of them has to carry the weight of telling you who you are.
