Sho Baraka learned the vocabulary of a religious movement he rejects from his favorite rap records, years before he knew where the words came from. That experience is the core of his answer to whether art can reach people when arguments don’t. It can, because art makes an idea familiar before anyone argues for it. But art does not replace argument. It prepares the ground, raises questions and then needs someone ready to answer them.
Baraka, a recording artist, is not making a general plea for Christians to produce more art. He is making a specific claim about how beliefs spread. People rarely adopt a worldview because they lost a debate. More often they absorb its language and its picture of what is good, and they absorb it from things they enjoy. Arguments still matter. They just land on ground that stories have already shaped.
How a Worldview Travels Through Music
Baraka’s evidence does not start with a Christian success story. It starts with a movement he believes teaches error, and that choice gives his case its force.
He traces the influence of the Nation of Gods and Earths, often called the Five Percent, to its founder, Clarence 13X. Baraka reports that Clarence 13X had ties to Malcolm X’s temple and, seeing that the older movement was losing touch with young people, set out to reach the young in Harlem and New York directly. Because the movement was intentional about the young, its ideas moved into the culture young people were making. When hip-hop emerged, the movement’s vocabulary went with it.
Baraka lists phrases that passed into hip-hop speech from that source: word is bond, cipher, build, the science, doing the math. He names artists he grew up loving, among them Rakim and Wu-Tang, and describes reciting their lines as a fan without knowing what he was repeating. “You just thought you was just rapping lyrics,” he says. In his assessment, the people behind it knew exactly what they were doing: “So they were very savvy and slick with how they did it.”
The principle he draws is this: when “you give people a language and a narrative, they get to kind of like adapt it and own it,” and they pass it among themselves until it changes how they see the world and how they talk to each other. A worldview that arrives as entertainment does not trigger the defenses a sermon or a debate triggers. By the time a listener notices the ideas, they are already his.
Baraka’s history is his own telling, offered from memory in conversation, and its dates and the origins of specific phrases deserve checking against historians of the movement. But his argument does not rest on every detail. It rests on an observation most people can confirm from their own lives: repeated, enjoyable language forms people before they decide anything.
What Lewis Was Doing With Aslan
Baraka’s positive example is C.S. Lewis, whom he calls one of his literary heroes. As Baraka describes Lewis’s intent, The Chronicles of Narnia were not written mainly to convert readers. Lewis wanted to give children a literary picture of Jesus in Aslan, “so that when people were presented with an idea of sacrifice and atonement for sins, that it wouldn’t be this farfetched idea.”
That aim is narrower and more realistic than “use stories to evangelize.” Lewis, in Baraka’s account, was not trying to prove the atonement. He was trying to make it thinkable. A child who has grieved over a lion who gave himself up for a traitor already knows, before any theology class, that a willing sacrifice for someone else can be good and not only tragic. When that child later hears the gospel, the claim has somewhere to land.
Baraka explains why this counts as a countercultural move: “Because people don’t talk about sacrifice for the sake of others in mainstream culture.” The story does not simply decorate a Christian idea. It supplies a category the surrounding culture has stopped supplying. Without the category, the gospel sounds strange. With it, the gospel sounds like the true version of something the reader already loves.
What a Gospel-Shaped Lyric Sounds Like
Baraka’s own example is ordinary, and that is the point. When he writes about relationships, he makes a habit of naming marriage, rather than treating romance as casually as most popular music does. “I want them to know when I’m talking about a young lady in a relationship, she’s my wife,” he says. He explains that he is communicating two things: that marriage is a serious covenant between a man and a woman, and that commitment itself matters.
No one hears that line as a sermon. A listener hears a man talking about his wife. But repeated song after song, it builds a picture in which love means covenant and permanence, a picture that runs against what most music around it assumes. This is what Baraka means when he says Christian art “can be an apologetic” without always being “totally explicit.” The countercultural view is carried and made attractive inside material that does not announce itself as an argument.
He names two ways Christian artists miss this. The first is laying out the message in a form that is easy to accept for youth groups and church movements, work that only ever speaks to people who already agree. The second runs the other way. An artist gets absorbed into the culture and makes music with no real depth, music whose only Christian feature is that it avoids degrading women. Baraka’s verdict on that kind of song is blunt: “It really says nothing.” It borrows the sound of the culture and offers nothing the culture lacks. The first failure keeps the truth in the building. The second leaves the truth behind altogether.
Baraka is careful to add that explicitly Christian music made for the church has its place, and that there it should be clear and detailed in its doctrine. His argument concerns artists making work for the wider world.
Isn’t Hidden Messaging Just Manipulation With Better Motives?
This is the strongest objection, and Baraka’s own evidence sharpens it. His model for how art spreads a worldview is a movement he believes spread falsehood. If coded lyrics are how error got into the culture, why would the same method be honest when Christians use it?
The answer turns on a distinction. The method is neutral. Story and repetition carry whatever is put into them, true or false. What makes art an honest witness is not its subtlety but its content and its openness. A Christian artist who puts covenant in a love song is not hiding a doctrine to trap anyone. He is showing what he believes is true about love, in a form people can feel. And Baraka rejects the idea that faithful art should conceal Christ: “I’m also not saying, don’t say Jesus.” His concern is how Jesus is presented, not whether.
Scripture offers a precedent for truth that arrives through story before it arrives as a direct claim. When the prophet Nathan confronted King David after Bathsheba and Uriah, he did not open with the charge. He told a story about a rich man who stole a poor man’s only lamb. David, angered by the injustice, condemned the man before he realized he was condemning himself. Then came the verdict: “And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man” (2 Samuel 12:7). The story got past David’s defenses, and the plain word followed. The parable did not replace the prophet’s direct speech. It made David able to hear it.
Jesus taught the crowds in parables as well. Mark 4:33–34 describes the pattern:
“And with many such parables spake he the word unto them, as they were able to hear it. But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples” (Mark 4:33–34).
The passage needs careful handling. In the same chapter Jesus says parables can also hide meaning from those outside (Mark 4:11–12), so they are not simply aids that make everything easy. But the text does describe stories given as people were able to hear them, followed by explanation for those who stayed close. Story first, explanation after: that is the sequence Baraka describes. Reading these passages as a model for Christian art is application, not their direct subject, and it should be held that way.
Why Art Cannot Finish the Job
Here is the part of Baraka’s case that the slogan “art reaches people” usually leaves out. Art starts conversations it cannot finish.
After his album Talented Tenth, Baraka says, a few lines in a song brought him a flood of emails and messages from people asking questions. His response was not satisfaction but pressure: “If I’m gonna be answering questions and people gonna be asking me questions, I gotta actually know what I’m talking about.” The art did its work. It made people curious. Then it handed them to someone who had to give real answers.
Baraka knows what waits on the other side of those questions. He describes friends and family drawn toward groups teaching that Christianity is a slave religion or a stolen one. Much of what they repeat, he says, is easy to refute, but those groups answered questions the church had left open: who am I, what is my history, why do I matter. Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, names why such encounters shake believers: “A lot of people don’t know what they believe and why they believe it.” A confident, fluent counter-narrative can overwhelm someone who was never taught.
Put that beside Baraka’s view of art and the sequence is clear. Art can create interest and make Christian ideas feel possible. When the hard questions come, someone has to answer them, or the art has only opened a door for another teacher to walk through. Art without apologetics is incomplete. Apologetics without art often never gets a hearing.
Whose Story Gets Set to Music
Baraka ends with narrative. He argues that the Black church needs to develop and manage its own narrative instead of spending its energy seeking approval within mainstream evangelicalism. “We don’t celebrate our own authors. We don’t celebrate our own pastors of history,” he says, and he links that neglect to how few resources exist to answer the questions he hears.
That brings his argument back to where it began. The Five Percent did not win young listeners by out-arguing the church. It gave them a story and a vocabulary, and the music carried both. Baraka’s own fandom shows how well that works. If Christians, and Black Christians in particular, leave their own history untold, including the deep African roots of the faith he emphasizes, they have not stayed neutral. They have left the soundtrack to someone else.
Baraka hopes that honest questions about what is actually good for culture will, if pressed far enough, “lead to the need for ultimate truth.” Whether those questions get asked depends partly on which story people already know by heart. The church does not get to choose whether art will form its neighbors. It only chooses whether its own story will be among the songs they learn.
