You can reason your way to God, though the reasoning resembles an investigation more than a math proof. A careful person who walks into a house where something has clearly gone wrong gathers every clue, tests the possible explanations against all of them and accepts the one that leaves the fewest loose ends. Alycia Wood approaches the existence of God the same way, and she argues the method leads past a vague higher power to the God revealed in Jesus.
The shape of her reasoning matters as much as its conclusion, because it places the burden of proof somewhere most people never think to look. Anyone who has been told that belief requires either an airtight proof or a blind leap has been handed a choice with a hidden assumption inside it.
Why Refuse to Prove God in Two Minutes?
Wood once sat for a live radio interview. The interviewer set up a scenario: he sits next to her on a bus, he has two minutes, and she has to prove God exists before his stop. Then the show went to commercial and left her to think about it.
She declined the terms. Cramming the question into two minutes, she said, would shrink its importance. Her alternative was simple: “Like, I think I would wanna give it the time that it deserves.”
That refusal identifies a flaw in the challenge. The two-minute demand assumes that if God exists, one decisive sentence should settle the matter, the way a single calculation settles a sum. If no such sentence exists, belief supposedly has nothing behind it.
The assumption fails almost everywhere else in life. No one expects a jury to reach a verdict from one exhibit, or a doctor to diagnose from one symptom. Some conclusions are reached by convergence: many pieces of evidence, each limited on its own, pointing the same way. A demand for a sound-bite proof rules out that method before the evidence gets a hearing.
What Kind of Reasoning Is This?
Wood studied criminal justice as an undergraduate, and she says that background taught her to follow where the clues lead. Her illustration comes from that world.
Suppose a friend who lives in a violent home usually calls every week, and one week she does not. You go to her house. The door pops open when you touch the handle. Inside you find blood on the walls and the house torn apart. You call out and no one answers. Wood asks, “Is it irrational for me to conclude that something happened here?”
Wood stops short of saying the evidence proves exactly what occurred. She raises a rival explanation herself: perhaps a wild animal broke in. Then she tests it. An animal might account for the blood and the mess. It does not account for the missed call or the open door. The explanation involving the husband accounts for all of it, especially given what she already knew about the home. So she concludes something has happened and calls the police.
Philosophers call this pattern inference to the best explanation, but the idea is ordinary. Nearly any explanation is possible, so possibility settles nothing. The useful question is which explanation covers the most evidence with the least strain. Wood states the question she would put to the God debate this way: “Let’s look at all of these different clues, these different hints, and what is the best possible explanation that answers every single one of them?”
Two features of that sentence carry the weight. The standard is comparative: God is measured against the alternatives, and certainty is off the table for everyone. The standard is also about scope: an explanation earns its place by accounting for every clue. The wild-animal theory failed because it left facts unexplained, even though it was possible.
What Are the Clues, and What Would a Rival Have to Explain?
Wood points to several features of the world:
- People struggle to decide what is right, yet they feel certain some things are wrong.
- The universe exists at all, which raises the question of how we got here.
- It appears precisely set for life, including human life, to exist in it.
- People want what they do and say to matter.
- The most influential man in history, Jesus, needs explaining.
Her claim is structural. She does not say the moral sense alone proves God, or that fine-tuning alone does. She says a personal Creator accounts for these features together, while rival explanations tend to handle some and leave others unexplained. That claim needs testing, and morality is a good place to test it.
A naturalist has a serious rival account of morality. Moral feelings, on this view, came from evolution and social life: groups that cooperated and protected their young survived, and cultures reinforced those instincts. This explains a great deal. It explains why nearly everyone recoils at cruelty to children, and why moral rules overlap across cultures.
The question is what it leaves over. It explains why we feel that abusing a child is wrong. It does not obviously explain why that feeling is correct, binding on someone who lacks it or on a culture that approves of it. Wood presses exactly this point. If people build their own moral codes, she asks, on what basis can one person say another is wrong to live by a different code? A real accusation of evil, she argues, needs a standard that holds every human being accountable regardless of race, ethnicity or place.
The residue is the authority of moral claims, the part we rely on whenever we call an injustice wrong rather than merely unwelcome. A naturalist can respond in two ways: accept that moral claims have no such authority, which most people find hard to live with, or give an account of that authority without God. Either response is available, and serious thinkers attempt both. The cumulative case does not depend on winning this exchange outright. It depends on the observation that theism explains the authority of morality directly, while the rival must either pay a cost or do further work. Repeat that comparison across origins, fine-tuning and meaning, and the case starts to take shape.
Wood is also candid about which clue she considers strongest. Apart from the evidence for the resurrection, she does not think any single thing could conclusively prove the Christian God exists. On the resurrection she is direct: she believes the “evidence of resurrection of Jesus is very overwhelming.” Her reasoning for why it matters is plain: “We all know that people don’t usually rise from the dead, and so if this person does, maybe we should listen to him.”
Do Weak Clues Really Add Up to Anything?
Here is the strongest objection, stated fairly. Each clue can be explained some other way. Morality might come from evolution and social pressure. The universe might have a natural cause we have yet to find. Fine-tuning might be an illusion created by our own existence. If every bucket leaks, stacking ten leaky buckets will not hold water.
The bucket image assumes each clue has zero weight unless it is decisive on its own. Evidence does not work that way, including in the house Wood described. The missed phone call proves nothing by itself, since people miss calls. The open door proves nothing by itself, since doors fail to latch. Their force comes from appearing together, and from the fact that one explanation predicts all of them while the rivals must treat each as a separate coincidence.
The objection does land in one way, and an honest case should admit it. Convergence adds strength only when the clues are reasonably independent and each carries some real weight. If a clue is fully explained by something else, it drops out of the count. A skeptic who shows that one clue has no weight has done real work. A skeptic who shows only that each clue could have another explanation has done much less, because the question was always what best explains everything.
That raises the matter of burden. A skeptic who says only, I don’t know what explains these things, holds a legitimate position and owes no rival theory. A skeptic who claims that nature alone accounts for morality, origins, fine-tuning, the desire for meaning and the historical puzzle of Jesus has proposed an explanation, and it must compete on the same terms as theism. Neither side stands on neutral ground once it makes claims about reality.
How Does the Case Reach the God of the Bible?
A common complaint about arguments for God is that they prove too little. Grant a first cause and a designer, and you still have no reason to prefer the God of Scripture over a distant power that set things running and left. Wood’s method answers this in two stages.
The first stage asks whether anything is there at all, and the general clues do most of their work here. The second asks a narrower question: Does anything in the evidence tell us which God exists? Wood’s answer comes from Jesus: his life, the credibility of the Bible’s account and the evidence for his resurrection. With those added, she says, you move from saying there is a God to saying there is a Christian God. In her words, “And to me, it’s not just that God exists, but that it’s that Christian God exists.”
This structure matters logically. The general arguments cannot carry anyone to Christianity, and Wood does not pretend they can. What they do is make the question open. Once a reasonable person grants that something beyond nature may be there, the claim that a man rose from the dead becomes a historical question to examine instead of an idea dismissed in advance. The resurrection then does the narrowing work, because it is a particular event tied to a particular person who made particular claims.
Those claims were unusual. Jesus, Wood observes, did more than claim to have wisdom or truth. He claimed to be the truth and to be God himself. That claim fits poorly with a remote, uninvolved deity. If it is true, it identifies the God in question.
Everything in this second stage depends on whether the historical evidence for the resurrection holds up. This article does not lay out that evidence, and Wood’s confidence in it is her assessment. A reader who wants to test the case must test that claim directly. The cumulative structure shows where the weight sits. It does not excuse anyone from lifting it.
Is Faith a Blind Leap?
Wood rejects the charge that Christian faith means accepting a book because someone handed it to you. She points to the command Jesus called the first:
“And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment” (Mark 12:30).
The mind sits in that list beside the heart.
Her main example is Thomas, who refused to believe the resurrection unless he could see and touch the wounds. When Jesus appears again, he meets the request:
“Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing” (John 20:27).
Wood’s conclusion from the scene is that “God never demands uninformed acceptance of him.”
The next verse seems to cut the other way: “Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed” (John 20:29). John answers the puzzle two verses later:
“But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name” (John 20:31).
The people blessed in verse 29 lack eyewitness sight, yet they believe on the strength of the testimony John has just written down. Every person reasoning about history stands in that same position.
Wood then turns the blind-faith charge around. When she asks atheists for their evidence, she says, some reply that atheism is a negative claim and needs no proof. Her response: “Somebody is following blindly, but I don’t think it’s me.” Her point holds against anyone who makes claims about reality while exempting those claims from evidence. It does not hold against someone who is honestly undecided, and the cumulative method gives that person something concrete to do: compare the explanations.
What Remains Open
The cumulative case offers no geometric certainty and does not claim to. Two thoughtful people can weigh the same clues and land in different places, especially on how much weight each one carries. The moral argument, the fine-tuning argument and the historical case for the resurrection each need their own careful examination, and Wood herself recommends reading widely rather than expecting one book to answer everything.
What the case establishes is narrower and more useful than a knockout. Belief in God can be a reasoned conclusion about which explanation best fits the world, held for reasons that can be stated, examined and challenged. Wood puts it in personal terms: “I don’t have to forsake my mind in order to believe.”
That is also why the two-minute challenge deserved refusal. It trades the question What best explains everything we see?for What can be said quickly? Anyone serious about whether God exists, believer or skeptic, owes the question the slower one.
