You can understand the Bible well without learning Greek. What you need is a working grasp of how words carry meaning. When a pastor cites a Greek word, he is making a claim about what that word means in one passage, and that claim can be checked. The worry in the pew assumes that real meaning sits inside Greek vocabulary, where only trained readers can reach it. Dr. Chad Thornhill, who teaches New Testament Greek, thinks that assumption is false. His reasons change what an ordinary reader actually needs to learn.
What Is the Worry, Stated as Strongly as Possible?
The concern deserves a fair hearing, because most of it is true. The New Testament was written in Greek. Every English translation involves choices about how to render that Greek. A reader who knows only English depends on choices someone else made. So the person who can read the original seems to have access that everyone else lacks.
Thornhill grants the first three steps without hesitation. He says that sometimes “really big theological points hang on a word, as small as a preposition.” He also warns that “when we’re relying on translations exclusively, we don’t always have a sense of the different shades of meaning that a particular passage could take.” This is a teacher of the language admitting that the language matters.
The argument fails at its last step. That translation involves choices is one claim. That meaning is locked inside the word, with final say belonging to whoever knows the word, is a much larger one. The larger claim depends on a hidden premise about how words carry meaning. That premise is the thing to test.
Where Does a Word’s Meaning Actually Live?
Thornhill’s answer is blunt. He tells his students that “words don’t have a meaning. Words have a range of meaning, and the only way that we know what a particular word means is by how it’s activated in a particular context.”
His illustration is the English word ball. Most people picture a round object. Attach foot and the sense shifts. Someone who dresses up and goes to a ball is attending a formal event. In baseball, a ball is a pitch outside the strike zone. Thornhill’s point is that the word never carries all of those senses at once, and nothing in the four letters tells you which one is meant. The sentence does.
If that is how words work, the hidden premise collapses. Meaning is produced when a word’s possible senses meet a specific context. Thornhill lists the layers of that context. There are the words around it. There is the kind of writing it belongs to, whether a letter, a gospel or a prophetic book. There are the historical, cultural and social conditions of the world in which the book was written.
Notice what follows. Knowing Greek tells you what senses a word could carry. Deciding which sense a writer intended depends on context, and most of that context can be read in English. You can read the whole chapter. You can tell whether you are in a letter or a narrative. You can learn what was happening in first-century Corinth or Rome. A Greek word cited on its own, with no argument from context, carries less weight than it sounds like it carries.
If Context Decides, Why Learn Greek at All?
This is the strongest objection, and it should be answered directly. If English readers can handle context, why do seminaries spend years teaching grammar, syntax and exegesis?
Thornhill’s answer comes through an analogy from the opening of his book Greek for Everyone: learning a language is like learning to dance. Dances have rules, set sequences of steps and tempos. Get the mode wrong and you might set out to waltz and end up doing a tango. Language has rules and structure too. But he adds that “just learning the rules doesn’t necessarily equip you to getting the full force of what someone is saying.” There is an art to it. Exegesis, he explains, “is just a word that means taking meaning out, essentially,” interpreting within the context of what is being said.
The art is where the trained reader earns his keep. As students go deeper, Thornhill says, some things become clearer, and they also discover that certain phrases carry real options. Expertise reveals choices that a single translation hides.
Thornhill gives a case from his own reading:
“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death” (Romans 8:2).
Many commentators, he notes, take law here to mean a principle. That reading has real support. Late in Romans 7, Paul speaks of finding a law at work in him, a law in his members warring against the law of his mind (Romans 7:21–23), and there the word plainly describes an operating force. A reader who sees Romans 8:2 as continuing that contrast between two forces will favor the principle sense.
Thornhill leans the other way. Through most of Romans 7, Paul uses the same word for the law that, because of sin, did not accomplish what God intended. He reads Paul as describing that law under two different spheres of influence. Apart from the Spirit, it sits under sin and death. Within the Spirit, it brings life.
Look at the structure of that disagreement. Both readings are possible senses of the word. The lexicon permits either one. What separates the interpreters is an argument about which stretch of Romans 7 governs the verse. That remains a contested reading among faithful scholars, and nothing here settles it. But the deciding evidence is open to anyone. The King James Version renders the word as “law” in both phrases and throughout Romans 7, so an English reader can follow the repetition and weigh the options.
So Greek matters in a specific way. It maps where a decision was made and which options were on the table, and the argument from context makes the choice.
When Does a Greek Word Become a Smokescreen?
Thornhill is clear about which side he is on: “I want our pastors to know Greek, I want them to use it.” He is also candid about a misuse he has seen. He says it “can sort of become a smokescreen,” and he spells out the logic in a pastor’s voice: “I know Greek, you don’t, therefore, because I’m using this word.” He calls part of it an intimidation factor, while adding of most pastors he has encountered that “this isn’t their intention.”
The difference between the two uses lies in the shape of the argument. A pastor who uses Greek well says something like this: the word can mean these things, the translation chose this one, and here is the evidence from the passage for the sense I think Paul meant. That argument invites you to check it. The smokescreen skips the middle step. It presents one sense as if it were the only one and treats the speaker’s training as the evidence. Credentials take the place of reasons.
Thornhill’s remedy is to teach ordinary readers what different tools actually report. A “concordance is gonna tell you how a certain translation translated a word in different contexts, but lexicon is gonna tell you what the possible meanings of that word is.” A concordance shows you a translator’s habits. A lexicon shows you the word’s range. Neither one, alone, tells you what a given verse means.
Disputed words show the method under pressure. When someone gives the word porneia a narrow rendering, that is itself a Greek claim. Thornhill allows the word may be used narrowly in certain contexts, but argues that generally in the New Testament a broader application is in view, given the Jewish setting of the New Testament and the Old Testament texts Paul draws on. Lexical evidence weighed together with Paul’s context decided it for him. He warns against “isolated proof texts and word games that we do to try to either justify certain things or to make Christianity more appealing to the culture.” A word game can run in any direction. Context is the check on all of them.
What Should an Ordinary Reader Learn Instead?
If the hidden premise is false, the reader’s task changes. You can skip memorizing vocabulary and verb charts. You need to understand how meaning is built, and you need a few habits that let you test claims. Thornhill wrote his book for this purpose. He notes that free digital resources and Bible software can supply the technical information about how words are formed. That frees readers to focus on how the language works and where it affects interpretation. His stated aim was to get readers “to the payoff a little bit more quickly than a traditional approach.”
Several habits follow from his reasoning.
- Compare translations. Thornhill says “comparing translations often helps us give a window into those different shades of meaning that we wouldn’t otherwise have.” Different translation groups render a verse differently because real options may exist. When careful translations diverge, you have found a decision point.
- Look the word up, then return to the verse. A free online interlinear will show which Greek word sits under the English. A lexicon entry for it lists the senses it can carry. Then read the surrounding chapter and ask which sense fits the argument there.
- Read the passage being quoted. When a New Testament writer cites the Old Testament, Thornhill says our first reaction should be to look up that passage in its own context.
- Ask what it meant then before asking what it means now. He warns that “the danger is when we don’t do that, we often are gonna end up reading our context into it.” Scholars call this anachronism, reading something later back into an earlier text.
After a Greek claim in a sermon, two questions are enough to start: What other senses can this word carry? What in this passage points to the one you chose? A pastor using the language well will be glad to answer both.
The habit of reading quoted passages shows how far an English reader can go. Matthew 2:15 applies to Jesus the words “Out of Egypt have I called my son.” The prophet Hosea reads:
“When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt” (Hosea 11:1).
In Hosea the son is Israel, and no Greek is required to notice that, only the willingness to turn to the prophet. Thornhill proposes that Matthew presents Jesus as reliving Israel’s story, succeeding where Israel failed. That is an interpretive reading of Matthew’s design, but the question it answers only appears once a reader looks up the source.
The last habit raises the hardest part of reading, and it has little to do with vocabulary. Thornhill’s examples come from 1 Corinthians: food sacrificed to idols in chapter 8 and head coverings in chapter 11. Few American readers wonder whether their hamburger was offered to an idol. Ignoring the passage is the wrong response, he says, and so is applying it literally without first asking why Paul raised it. Even a familiar command like loving your neighbor requires asking, “What does love mean?” His answer applies to the whole subject: “Part of that’s understanding the word that’s used, but part of it’s bigger than that.” Moving from interpretation to application, he says, is “more complicated than I think we often admit it is.”
What Does This Argument Not Settle?
Two limits should be stated plainly.
First, tools do not turn a reader into an expert. A lexicon lists the possible senses of a word. Judging between those senses still takes skill, and that skill is the art Thornhill describes. A reader with a free app can test a claim but cannot always resolve one alone. Some readings, like Romans 8:2, stay open among trained interpreters, and the realistic goal is knowing what evidence would settle a reading and where to find it.
Second, the argument does not justify suspicion of every pastor who mentions Greek. Thornhill wants pastors to use the language. The fitting response to a Greek claim is a question about what the claim rests on.
What the argument does establish is a shift in where the burden falls. The original worry asked whether you are qualified to understand the Bible. The better question is whether a given claim about a word has been supported by its context. Anyone who explains a Greek word owes that support, whether the speaker is a pastor or a skeptic, and a reader who knows how words work can ask for it.
Thornhill puts the goal this way: “I hope to help people pay attention to the details and to pay attention to the big picture.” He adds, “Sometimes we’re really good at one of those, and often not at both.” The mid-sermon Greek word belongs to the details. Whether it means what the speaker says depends on the big picture, and the big picture was never written in a language you cannot read.
