The religions do agree on one thing, and it is a real agreement: something is wrong with the human condition. They do not agree on how it gets fixed. Abdu Murray, who was raised Muslim and spent nine years comparing worldviews before becoming a Christian, argues that most traditions finish with some version of self-repair: do enough, practice enough, submit enough, and you will close the gap. The Bible says the person doing the fixing is part of what is broken, so rescue has to come from someone else. A shared problem with incompatible solutions is not one message.
That answer holds only if the pluralist claim is taken seriously first. So it is worth asking what “basically the same” would have to mean for the claim to be true.
What Would “Basically the Same” Have to Mean?
The strongest version of the claim is not naive. It does not say every religion has identical rituals or identical gods. It says the outward differences are packaging, and underneath them sits a common core: humans are not what they should be, we should be honest and generous, and there is something beyond us worth reaching toward. On this view, the faiths are climbing one mountain by different paths.
Murray grants more of this than a reader might expect. He says religious texts across history speak to the human condition, “which to me suggests that there are at least kernels of truth in all of those sacred texts to a degree.” He names goodness, charity, duty, honor and honesty as recurring themes. Then he qualifies it: “but they don’t all say those things in equal measure.” Overlap in moral vocabulary is real. Equal content is a further claim.
He also leans on a source outside Christian apologetics. Murray points to Stephen Prothero’s book God Is Not One, describing Prothero as a scholar of comparative religion who, as far as Murray can tell, is not writing from a Christian perspective. Murray summarizes Prothero’s observation this way: “They all start with a commonality. There’s something wrong with the world, and we need to fix it.”
So the pluralist and Murray agree on the first step. The argument turns on what happens next.
The Premise Hiding Inside the Claim
Here is the reasoning most people use without stating it:
- The religions agree that something is wrong with us.
- Agreement about the problem is the heart of a religion.
- So the religions basically agree.
The second step does almost all the work. Without it, the conclusion does not follow. And it is exactly what each tradition denies. None of them exists merely to announce that the world is broken. Each exists to say what to do about it, and why that answer is right.
A simple case shows the gap. Two advisers agree you owe a debt you cannot ignore. One tells you to work extra shifts until it is paid. The other tells you a benefactor has already paid it, and your job is to accept the payment and live differently because of it. They agree completely on the problem. They disagree on what you do tomorrow morning, on what you feel when you fail and on whom you thank when the account is cleared. Nobody would call that the same advice.
Murray’s argument works in that gap. After the shared starting line comes his second observation: “But they all have different finish lines.” He lists the routes: devotion, yoga, meditation, ethical monotheism and law-based paths. “The finish lines are always different in how you get there,” he says.
Two Different Splits, and Which One Matters Most
The divergence Murray describes actually happens at two levels, and it helps to keep them apart.
The first is destination. What is the goal of the religious life? Murray describes karma, reincarnation and enlightenment as non-negotiables within Hinduism and Buddhism, even though much else in those traditions is flexible. A goal defined as release from the cycle of rebirth is a different hope from the Christian hope of resurrection life with the God who made you. If the destinations differ, the one-mountain picture fails before any further argument.
The second is mechanism: who actually does the saving? This is where Murray places the weight, and it is the sharper claim:
“But except for the Bible, they all start essentially with the same ending line, which is you can fix you. If you do enough good things, you’ll fix you.”
— Abdu Murray
On Murray’s account, meditation, devotion, ritual and law are different techniques inside one shared assumption: the human being has the resources, with enough effort and discipline, to repair the human being. The Bible rejects that assumption. “We can’t be the solution because we are the problem,” he says, and so “we need someone who’s not us to fix us and to save us from us.”
Either split alone would defeat the claim that the religions say the same thing. The mechanism split carries more weight because it cuts deeper. Two traditions could, in principle, describe similar destinations and still disagree completely about whether you can get there on your own.
Paul’s argument in Romans 1–3 builds toward a verdict that leaves no group standing on its own record:
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
In context, Paul is not saying some people are bad and need to try harder. He is putting Jew and Gentile on level ground, which is why he moves straight from that verdict to justification as a gift. Ephesians draws out the consequence: “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8–9).
A Test Case: Mercy You Have to Earn
An obvious objection is that many traditions speak of a merciful God or of help from beyond. Does that blur Murray’s line?
His description of orthodox Islam, the faith he practiced until the age of 27, is useful because Islam clearly affirms divine mercy. Murray grants it directly: “God is in fact merciful, but you have to sort of earn that mercy through your good words and your good deeds.” He sums up the system as “essentially, it’s a works-based system,” with the hope that good deeds outweigh bad, and adds, “And there is no savior, by the way.” He cites the Quran’s principle: “No bearer of burdens can bear the burden of another.”
That gives us a diagnostic question to carry into any tradition. The issue is not whether a religion mentions mercy. It is whether that help supplements your effort or substitutes for it. A God who forgives those who have done enough still leaves the final weight on the human side of the scale.
Murray then turns the Quranic principle into a bridge. “Well, that’s a relief, because Jesus does not bear his own burdens. He has no sins of his own to bear.” The logic is tight. If no one carrying his own guilt can carry another’s, then whoever could carry ours would have to carry none of his own. Paul makes exactly that claim about Jesus:
“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” (2 Corinthians 5:21).
One limit should be stated plainly. This account of Islam is Murray’s, given as a former Muslim, and a Muslim reader may describe the relationship between mercy and deeds differently. The test is still the right one to apply. Its answer should be checked against Islamic sources themselves.
Is the Line Too Tidy?
Murray speaks in general terms: “almost every sacred text,” “essentially,” “except for the Bible.” Generalizations about whole religions deserve testing, and there are strands that lean hard on grace. Devotional bhakti traditions within Hinduism speak of the love and favor of a personal deity. Pure Land Buddhism teaches reliance on the vow of Amida Buddha in place of one’s own effort. Murray does not address these in this conversation, so his argument has to be extended to them, not assumed.
Apply the two tests and they come out differently. On mechanism, a strand like Pure Land does look closer to substitution than supplementation, which means Murray’s “except for the Bible” needs qualifying there. On destination, the difference remains: rebirth in the Pure Land is traditionally understood as a setting where enlightenment becomes attainable, which is a different end from the resurrection of the body and life with the triune God. And neither strand claims what Christianity makes central: that the one who saves took on human flesh, died bearing others’ sin and rose bodily.
So the honest result is this. Murray’s structural line may have exceptions at the edges. The conclusion that the religions do not say the same thing survives every exception, because where the mechanism converges, the destination and the identity of the savior still part ways.
Why the Rescuer Has to Come From Outside
Murray does not treat the savior claim as a stray doctrine. He argues it holds the rest of the Christian message together. If humans cannot save themselves, someone must stand in their place. That someone must be truly human to represent us and without sin to pay what we owe, so the incarnation follows. The payment must also be real, offered by the Son to the Father, which is why Murray insists it is “not just putting money in your right pocket from your left pocket.” That is how he ties the atonement to the Trinity, one God in three persons.
The consequence for this question is that the Christian answer cannot be detached and swapped. Remove the claim that rescue comes from outside, and you do not get a slightly different Christianity. You lose the reason for the incarnation, the cross and the resurrection. For Christianity, the finish line is not a detail laid over a common core. It is the core.
Doesn’t Christianity Also Ask for Effort?
Yes. Christians are called to repentance, obedience and a changed life. The difference lies in what that effort is for. Right after saying salvation is not of works, Ephesians continues: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10). The good works come after the rescue, as its result. In the self-repair structure, effort is the price of the outcome. In the Christian structure, effort is the response to an outcome already given. The visible behavior can look alike while the relationship between a person and their own striving is reversed.
Isn’t It Disrespectful to Say the Religions Disagree?
The reverse is closer to true. Saying all religions agree requires ignoring what most of them say about themselves. A Muslim who believes Jesus was not God incarnate and a Christian who believes he was are not saying the same thing politely. Treating them as identical means listening to neither.
Murray pairs his argument with a posture. His ministry aims not merely to answer objections but to answer the people raising them, “because questions don’t need answers, but people do.” That fits Peter’s instruction to Christians to “be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15). Disagreement stated with care is a form of respect. Flattening every faith into one is not.
What the Difference Does and Does Not Prove
The claim that all religions basically say the same thing fails because it rests on a premise the religions themselves reject: that the shared diagnosis is the substance. And the religions cannot all be right about the cure. If we cannot fix ourselves, a path built on fixing ourselves will not get us there. If we can, a savior is unnecessary.
What does not follow is that Christianity is therefore true. Showing that two answers differ shows only that you have to choose. Murray knows this, which is why he presses further tests on any text claiming to be sacred for everyone and not merely precious to its readers: whether we have today what was written then, whether its moral teaching is “timely for the time it was written, but timeless for all times as well,” and whether it fits reality as we actually find it.
That last test lands closest to home. Murray argues the Bible’s account earns credibility by refusing to flatter: “I think other religious systems might be telling you what you want to hear,” he says, and he calls the Christian faith “so starkly realistic, yet also hopeful.” Whether he is right is something every reader can check. Has sustained effort ever cured what is wrong with us, or do our best attempts keep carrying the problem along with them?
