The story usually goes like this. The first Christians saw Jesus as a teacher or a prophet. Then, in 325, a council of bishops met at Nicaea under the eye of the emperor Constantine and voted him into godhood, because an empire needed one religion to hold it together. The documentary trail runs the other way. Nicaea was called because a priest named Arius had started denying that Jesus was God. As Dr. Vince Bantu reads the sequence, the denial was the new idea and the council was the response to it.
That reversal can be tested. Bantu did his doctoral work in early African Christianity at the Catholic University of America, in a department devoted to the languages of the Christian Near East. Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, put the popular claim to him directly, describing it as “this myth that the deity of Christ was some kind of concoction from the council.” The useful way to answer is to ask what the record would look like if the myth were true.
What Would Have to Be True for the Theory to Hold?
If the bishops invented the deity of Christ in 325, certain things should show up. Christian writings from before the council should present Jesus as merely human, or at least never call him God. The council should have been settling an open question nobody had answered. The emperor behind it should have held the view he supposedly imposed. And the belief should be found only where his power reached.
If the theory is false, we should find the opposite: earlier writings that call Jesus God, a council reacting to someone who departed from that belief, an emperor whose own convictions were murky, and Christians beyond the Roman Empire holding the same belief without Roman instruction. Three of these four checks point clearly against the theory. The fourth, the state of belief before 325, is where the skeptic has real material, and it needs the closest look.
Why Was the Council Called in the First Place?
Nicaea took up several matters, including the date of Easter. The main issue was whether Jesus is eternally uncreated God or a created being subordinate to the Father. The man who raised that question was Arius, a North African from Libya serving as a priest in Egypt. He taught that God the Father created the Son, and the slogan attached to his movement held that there was a time when the Son did not exist.
One detail quietly takes apart the popular version. Arius did not teach that Jesus was an ordinary man. Bantu points out that Arius regarded the Son as more than a regular human, but as a being the Father made and placed beneath himself. So the picture of Jesus the theory starts from, a simple human teacher promoted by vote, matches neither side of the actual fight. The argument at Nicaea was between two exalted views of Christ. One said he was God. The other said he was the highest created being.
The opposition to Arius also came before the emperor did. Alexander, bishop of Alexandria, resisted the teaching before Constantine stepped in to settle the dispute. Athanasius, Alexander’s successor and the best-known defender of the Son’s full deity, was also Egyptian. In Bantu’s account, the leading voices on that side were bishops from Alexandria, Jerusalem and Antioch. The council’s answer was that the Son is of the same essence as the Father, expressed in the Greek term homoousios.
For Bantu, the fact that one teacher’s denial triggered a crisis shows how settled the opposite belief already was: “There was already Christians from day one who were saying that Jesus was God.” That inference has a limit. A controversy proves that people disagreed. It does not, by itself, prove which side was older. Arius gained followers, and his side later had powerful backing. To know which view was the innovation, you have to look at what Christians wrote before anyone had heard of him.
Constantine’s Fingerprints, and What They Prove
The political half of the theory is not made up from nothing, and Bantu does not pretend otherwise. Constantine convened the council. On the gathering itself, Bantu concedes that “in many ways it was his idea.” Bantu also repeats a reported account of the emperor entering in purple robes and walking down the middle of the assembly like a god. That is a retelling of what observers described, not a document in hand, but it fits the larger picture. Drawing on the historian Peter Brown, Bantu describes the push for one agreed belief as an extension of the emperor’s wider aims: “That was part of Constantine’s overall motivation to unite the empire.”
So the skeptic is right about something real. The question is what follows from it. Bantu separates two claims people often run together. One is that Constantine heavily influenced the council. The other is that Constantine created the belief that Jesus is God. “To me, those are two different things.” The first can be true while the second is false, the way a ruler can preside over a trial without having written the law the court applies.
Constantine himself makes an unlikely author for the doctrine. Bantu describes his faith as gradual and unclear, and his clearest commitment as Rome itself: “He was a Roman emperor, and that was his real conviction.” Constantine was not baptized until years after Nicaea. “He’s trying to rule this council as a bishop, but he is not even baptized.” When he was finally baptized, it was by Eusebius of Nicomedia, an Arian, a man who, as Bantu puts it, “did not believe that Jesus was God, that he was uncreated.”
The decades after the council sharpen the point. Athanasius was sent into exile for continuing to affirm the deity of Christ, and Constantius, a later emperor, was Arian and tried to press that view as far as Ethiopia. When imperial power took a theological side after Nicaea, it did not always take the Nicene one.
Where Does the Belief Appear Before 325?
The first place to look is the oldest one. “First of all, read the Bible,” Bantu says. Jesus tells his opponents:
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am” (John 8:58).
The argument in that chapter is over his relationship to Abraham. Jesus speaks of himself in the present tense as existing before Abraham, and the crowd reacts as if he has claimed something no mere man could claim.
John’s Gospel opens the same way:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1).
The term behind “Word,” logos, was familiar from Greek philosophy, where it described something flowing from the first cause of existence. Bantu observes that John takes up the word but places it under the Hebrew understanding of the one God, and then says plainly that this Word was God. Those lines were part of the church’s Scripture well before any bishop traveled to Nicaea.
The writers between the apostles and the council carry the thread forward. Justin Martyr, active from the early to the middle of the second century, built his teaching about the Word directly on John. Tertullian, a North African writing in Latin, was among the first to use the term Trinity, which by Bantu’s reckoning was almost a century before Nicaea. The pattern is a belief stated in Scripture, developed by second-century writers and given technical names well before Constantine came to power.
The Skeptic’s Best Material
The strongest objection does not come from Constantine at all. It comes from the earlier writers. Some of them ranked the Son below the Father. Bantu names Origen, a third-century teacher in Egypt, as an example. If respected Christians before 325 subordinated the Son, wasn’t the question still open, and didn’t Nicaea simply pick a winner?
Bantu’s answer turns on a distinction the popular story erases. Origen, he says, would not have agreed with Arius. Origen held that the Son exists eternally with the Father while ranking him beneath the Father. Arius held that the Son was made, that there was a time when he did not exist. Those are different claims. The first is an attempt, which later Christians judged inadequate, to describe the order between Father and Son. The second removes the Son from the side of the Creator and places him among created things.
That distinction explains what was actually new in 318 or 325. Christians before Nicaea had not all settled on one way to describe how the Father and the Son relate. They did not yet have a shared technical vocabulary, and some of their attempts were uneven. What they shared was the conviction that the Son was not a creature. Arius broke with that, and the council was called because he did. So the skeptic is right that the pre-Nicene language was not uniform, and wrong that the deity of Christ was up for grabs.
A related objection targets the word itself. Even granting the earlier belief, the formula that the Son shares the Father’s very essence came from Greek philosophy. Doesn’t that make the official doctrine a Roman product? Bantu grants part of this. He calls homoousios Greco-Roman terminology rooted in Platonic categories, a term many Christians elsewhere did not find natural, and links it to the broader Romanizing of the church after Constantine. But the objection treats a word and a belief as the same thing, and the evidence from outside the empire shows they are not.
Christians Constantine Could Not Command
If Constantine manufactured the belief, Christians beyond his reach should either lack it or have received it from Rome. They did neither.
Start with a correction. Constantine is often called the first Christian emperor, but Tiridates III of Armenia accepted Christianity and Christianized his nation about ten years before Constantine’s conversion, which Bantu places around 310 or 311. At that point, Bantu says, Constantine had been a commander under Diocletian, the emperor behind the Great Persecution, and had taken part in persecuting Christians. The Syriac-speaking church centered in Edessa had also embraced the faith for its region.
Persia is the strongest case. Bantu describes it as an empire as large and powerful as Rome, with Christians present since about the second century, believing that Jesus was God. One Persian bishop is recorded at Nicaea, yet the creed was not accepted in Persia until the Synod of Isaac in 410, convened under the Persian Shah and overseen by a bishop named Isaac. Constantine had no authority there. When the Persian church did accept the creed, it changed some of the wording to suit its Syriac-speaking setting. “And so it wasn’t forced on them, but they embraced it themselves and even altered it a bit to fit their context.”
Ethiopia, which became Christian under King Ezana around this time and lay outside the Roman Empire, refused the Arian view when Constantius tried to push it. And then there is Ephrem the Syrian, who in Bantu’s account argued against Arianism and firmly believed Jesus is God, yet disliked homoousios and rejected the word. Bantu has presented this in a paper of his own, building on a recent translation of Ephrem’s hymns on faith. If he is right, Ephrem is exactly the witness the theory cannot account for: a Christian who held the belief Nicaea defended while declining the vocabulary Nicaea used. The Persian revisions make the same point at the level of a whole church. Nicaea supplied a precise term for a disputed point. The conviction it protected came earlier and lived in places the term had not reached.
What the Record Settles
The order of events is not seriously in doubt. Scripture and second-century writers called Jesus God. A priest in Egypt denied it, and Egyptian bishops opposed him before the emperor intervened. The emperor who convened the council was baptized by a man on Arius’s side. Christians in Armenia, Persia and Ethiopia held the belief on their own terms. What remains a matter of judgment is narrower: how Constantine understood his own faith, and how exactly Ephrem handled the Nicene term.
Bantu offers a principle that explains why creeds look like inventions to people who read them in isolation. “It’s not till someone starts speaking something contrary or false, that now we have to come up with an answer and a response.” He compares Nicaea to the church’s reaction to Marcion, whose Bible without the Old Testament pushed the church to say clearly what its Scriptures were.
The popular theory notices something true and draws the wrong conclusion from it. Constantine did bend the church toward the empire, and Bantu sees that as the start of a long, damaging habit of blurring political identity and Christian faith. That history deserves an honest accounting. But it is a story about what an emperor tried to do with a belief that already existed. A creed tells you when the church was pressed to speak precisely. It does not tell you when the church began to believe.
