The idea that Moses did not write Genesis through Deuteronomy has a traceable history. It began with eighteenth-century readers sorting the text by the names it uses for God, and it reached its classic form in 1878, when the German scholar Julius Wellhausen gave the world four sources labeled J, E, D and P. Dr. Van Gayton, a board member of the Jude 3 Project, argues that the theory’s reputation is stronger than its case. In his view, the hypothesis leans on a prior rule that God cannot act, its source documents have never been produced and archaeology has cleared up some of the contradictions it was built to explain.
That is a historical claim about a historical theory, and it is best tested the way any history is tested: in order, from the oldest witnesses forward.
What Did Readers Believe Before the Theory Existed?
The first witness is the text itself. Again and again, the first five books introduce a speech with the same formula. Exodus 14:1 is typical: “And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying.” Exodus 24:4 goes further and reports an act of writing: “And Moses wrote all the words of the LORD.” These books present themselves as revelation given to Moses, with Moses as the one who set at least some of it down.
Gayton points to the next layer of witnesses, the communities who received these books. On the Jewish side, he says, “the Talmud and all the other writings, they attest to the fact that they believe these are the true writings of Moses.” On the Christian side, he names church fathers including Cyril of Jerusalem, Hilary and Augustine as readers who held the word of God to be true. Agreement across centuries does not prove a claim by itself. What it does establish is that the theory arrived late, and so it carries the burden of explaining why the people nearest to these books read them as Moses’s.
The Gospels add a witness Christians cannot set aside. Jesus tells his opponents:
“For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.” (John 5:46)
In the next verse he speaks of “his writings.” Jesus is arguing with religious leaders about whether their own Scriptures testify to him, and his argument assumes that Moses wrote. The verse does not settle every detail a modern reader might raise, and one of those details comes up below.
Where Did the Idea of Four Sources Come From?
According to Gayton, the turn came in the eighteenth century with Jean Astruc. Astruc noticed that Moses’s writings use different names for God in different passages, and he concluded that Moses had worked from two earlier documents when he composed the books. That detail matters for the chronology. In Gayton’s account, the first source theory did not reject Moses at all. It was a theory about what Moses used.
The second turning point, Gayton says, came in 1878, when Wellhausen expanded Astruc’s two documents into four. Gayton walks through the sources as the theory describes them:
- J uses the divine name usually rendered Yahweh, speaks of God in human terms and calls the mountain of the law Sinai.
- E is treated as a supplement to J, prefers Elohim and calls the mountain Horeb.
- D comes mainly from Deuteronomy, with its speeches and its stress on one central place of worship, and the theory ties it to the reform under King Josiah.
- P is the priestly material, found largely in Leviticus and Numbers and concerned with ritual, dietary law, holiness and God’s transcendence.
The theory then places priests in the period after the Babylonian exile, assembling all four into the books we now have.
It helps to see why this persuaded so many readers. The clues are real features of the text. The divine names do shift. The mountain is called both Sinai and Horeb. Some stories seem to appear twice, and Genesis 1 and 2 describe creation with different emphases and order. Deuteronomy’s insistence on one central sanctuary fits strikingly well with the later reform under Josiah. Gayton states the theory’s purpose plainly: its advocates were trying to explain what they considered problems “relative to dates and doublets and anachronisms.” A doublet is a story that seems to appear twice. Sources joined at their seams offered a single explanation for all of these at once, and that explanatory reach is the hypothesis at its strongest.
The strongest form of the theory, as Gayton describes it, made a further claim about the events themselves. In that version, the books are a later Israel looking back and writing, in his words, “this is how Israel wanted the story to be. This is what they would’ve wanted God to say.” That step changes the question. It moves from who wrote the books to whether what they report happened.
Why Does Gayton Say the Real Dispute Is Older Than 1878?
Gayton does not object to studying the text closely. He calls source criticism an analytical tool and says, “there’s nothing wrong with taking a critical look at the word of God, but what is essential is the basic presupposition that you hold in looking at this Bible.” His argument is that the decision about the supernatural is made before anyone counts divine names.
He places that decision in the Enlightenment, which in his telling treated human reason as the measure of all things and the natural world as the whole of reality. He says German scholarship carried that confidence into the study of the Bible, and he names Hegel and Kant among the philosophers he sees behind it. This is a compressed survey offered in conversation, and both philosophers’ views on religion are more complicated than a single sentence allows. It is best read as Gayton’s interpretation of the period.
The logic of his point holds up better than the survey. If you assume a closed universe of cause and effect, he says, no outside intervention is possible, and a passage in which God speaks to Moses has to be a later invention. If you assume an open universe in which the Creator can act within the order he made, the same passage can be read as a report. “So your starting point will determine how you interpret what you read,” Gayton says.
That argument has a limit, and it should be stated. Presupposition alone does not refute the method. Astruc, by Gayton’s own account, still credited Moses, and many scholars since have weighed sources in the Pentateuch while believing that God speaks. Gayton himself grants that everyone holds first principles they cannot fully prove, so every worldview involves some circular reasoning at its base. His target is narrower than source analysis as such. He objects to the version of the theory that treats every report of divine speech as invented, because that verdict came from the starting assumption, and the documents never established it.
He presses the consequence. Remove the supernatural from these books, and the Red Sea opens by a strong wind. Carry the same rule into the Gospels, and the blind are not healed. “When you take the supernatural element out of Christianity, there is no Christianity,” Gayton argues. A Christian can debate how the books were composed without crisis. A method that has already ruled out the acts of God the faith confesses, the resurrection above all, is another matter.
What Changed After Wellhausen?
The conversation does not give a detailed chronology of the century after 1878, and this article will not invent one. Gayton names the methods that followed, including form criticism and tradition criticism, which focuses on how traditions were passed down. The development he weighs most heavily is archaeology, and he points to Dr. William F. Albright as one of the foremost archaeologists in the field.
He gives two examples. Critics, he says, once asked where certain cities mentioned in Moses’s writings could be. Excavation showed that ancient people “built cities on top of cities,” so a site that looked empty could hold an older settlement beneath it. Critics also claimed that people in Moses’s day were not writing, and Gayton says archaeology has since shown that civilizations in the region where Moses and Abraham lived were writing. He does not name specific sites or texts, so readers should hold these as his summaries until they check the evidence behind them.
The shape of the argument is clear. Part of the original case against Mosaic authorship rested on what had not yet been found, and some of those gaps closed when the ground was dug. Gayton keeps archaeology in its place. “The word of God is the word of God, whether archeology can back it up or not,” he says. For him, excavation confirms the account’s reliability, while its authority rests elsewhere.
What About the Repeated Stories and the Two Creation Accounts?
Gayton takes up one of the most famous doublets. Abraham says his wife is his sister to protect himself among strangers, and later his son does the same. Gayton admits this looks like repetition at first glance. His answer is that men living in similar cultures, married to beautiful women and facing the same dangers, could act the same way, so a repeated pattern does not require two authors.
He reads Genesis 1 and 2 the same way: “there’s not two creation stories.” He grounds this in a principle of reading he credits to Aristotle. When a reader meets something in an author’s work that does not make sense, the right response is to suspect that the reader is missing something. “But you do not assume that the author did not know what he was talking about.” Gayton’s charge is that the theory reversed that courtesy, presuming that modern critics understood the material better than the ancient writer did.
Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, adds an observation from the text’s content. The Pentateuch is hard on Israel and hard on Moses, who never enters the Promised Land. “It just seems like a horrible story to write for yourself if it didn’t happen.” A record full of failure fits poorly with the claim that these books are idealized wish-history.
One question the conversation leaves untouched is Deuteronomy 34, which records Moses’s death and burial. Gayton does not address it. Many Christians who hold to Mosaic authorship have long allowed that this closing account came from a later hand, and that the claim concerns Moses as the substantial author of the books, not the writer of every line. Readers should know that defenders of Mosaic authorship hold the view in that qualified sense, and that the conversation itself offers no ruling on it.
Where Are the Source Documents?
Gayton’s most direct challenge is simple. The theory depends on documents behind the text we have. If Moses drew on earlier sources, or if Wellhausen was right that there were four main ones, “where are the documents that they drew from?” Gayton puts it bluntly: “Show me the original documents.”
A defender of the hypothesis would reply that sources absorbed into a finished work often do not survive, so their absence is expected. That reply is fair, and it also exposes the theory’s evidentiary limit. If the only evidence for J, E, D and P is the finished text, then the sources are inferences from patterns that other careful readers explain differently. A reconstruction can be a useful hypothesis. Teaching it as if it were a discovered manuscript overstates what anyone has found.
Why Does the Theory Still Dominate Classrooms?
Fields describes the documentary hypothesis as a big part of the divide between conservative and liberal approaches in universities and seminaries. Gayton agrees and speaks from inside those settings. He recalls a talk to a room of scholars at Georgetown University who held the hypothesis, in which he told them that if he had not experienced God’s power to transform his life, he might have believed them too. He also connects the anti-supernatural approach with the decline of mainline congregations, a judgment drawn from his ministry experience rather than from data he presents.
His deeper point concerns why the theory has lasted. A theory can outlive some of its early evidence when it is carried by an assumption the evidence never tested. Gayton sees the church trying to look intellectually respectable by accepting terms that require it to give up the God it worships. He does not ask Christians to stop thinking. “Those who do believe in the power of God still have a responsibility to pursue scholarship, to be analytical,” he says.
The theory began as an attempt to explain repeated stories and shifting divine names. In its strongest form, it became a claim that Israel’s God never spoke. The first proposal can be weighed text by text, and believers have weighed it. The second was settled before the examination started, and the documents never earned it.
