The claim is easy to state and easy to test: Jesus of Nazareth never lived, and Christianity grew up around an invented figure. If that were true, we would expect silence in the earliest records and accounts written long after anyone could check them. We would also expect the people who study antiquity for a living to be at least divided. None of that is what the record shows. The evidence that Jesus existed is early, comes from several kinds of sources and includes testimony from people who had no reason to help Christians. The “Jesus never existed” claim survives mostly outside the fields that study the ancient world.
Dr. Craig Keener, who earned his PhD in Christian origins at Duke University and came to faith out of atheism, tests the claim the way a historian would. He asks what standard we apply to every other figure from two thousand years ago, and whether Jesus meets it. That question decides the case.
Is the Jesus Myth a Live Debate Among Historians?
Keener’s first observation concerns who holds the view. He points to the people who teach ancient history, Greek and Roman classics and the study of the Gospels at universities and seminaries around the world. Of those thousands of professors, he says, “I don’t know of any who would deny that Jesus existed.” The skepticism, in his telling, lives on the popular level.
That statement has a limit. Keener is reporting what he knows from a long career in the field, not citing a formal survey, and a reader is entitled to weigh it as one expert’s account of his own discipline. Two details make it harder to dismiss.
The first is that Keener was not a friendly witness when he formed his first view. He describes himself as having been a mean atheist, and he says that “even when I was an atheist, I wouldn’t have said that Jesus didn’t exist.” Rejecting Christianity does not require denying that its founder lived, any more than rejecting a religion requires denying that its followers exist.
The second detail is his candor. Asked to lay out the mythicists’ case, Keener answered, “I don’t actually know what their arguments are.” He spends his time in the scholarly literature and in ancient sources. His best guess is that the argument comes down to a claim that the evidence is too thin or too poor. So the real test is not whose credentials are longer. It is whether that claim about the evidence holds up.
What Kind of Evidence Should We Expect From the Ancient World?
No one has video from the first century, and no historian expects it. The fair question is how the sources for Jesus compare with the sources for other ancient people whose existence nobody disputes.
Keener’s comparison is with Alexander the Great, who lived from 356 to 323 BC. The best surviving source on Alexander, he says, comes from a historian of the second century AD, more than 400 years after Alexander died. By contrast, the usual critical dating of the Gospel of Mark places it about 40 years after Jesus. On that comparison, Keener concludes, “the kind of evidence we have is better than we have most historical figures in the ancient world.”
Timing matters because of what oral historians call living memory: the period when eyewitnesses, or people who knew them, are still alive. Keener puts that window at roughly 60 to 80 years and says all of the first-century Gospels fall within it. He gives a concrete picture of that reach. He once belonged to a church in North Carolina where members still remembered people in that congregation who had been born in slavery.
Genre matters too. Keener says most scholars today treat the Gospels as ancient biographies. Early biographies could resemble a funeral oration, with exaggeration expected. In his account, the form came closest to what we would call history in the first and second centuries AD, and it was most careful when writing about recent figures. The Gospels were written in exactly that period, about a recent figure.
Among ancient teachers, Keener says, only Socrates might come close to having multiple works written about him within living memory. And just as our fullest information about Socrates comes from his followers, our fullest information about Jesus comes from his. Followers writing about their teacher is the normal shape of ancient evidence, not a disqualifying defect.
None of this proves that every Gospel detail is accurate. Early sources can still contain errors. The point is narrower and stronger: these accounts were written while people who could contradict them were still alive. A figure invented decades later would not leave that kind of trail.
What Do Sources Outside the Church Say?
If Jesus were invented, the strongest test would come from writers who were not Christians. Keener is careful about what to expect. Roman historians, he explains, mentioned people from the provinces only when those people mattered to Rome. By that measure, the attention Jesus receives is significant.
His comparison is revealing. Josephus, the first-century Jewish historian, writes at length about Herod Agrippa I, king of Judea from 41 to 44, yet Keener says Agrippa gets only a line in one Roman historian. Pontius Pilate appears in Roman literary sources, according to Keener, only once, in Tacitus’s Annals 15.44, and there he is identified as the governor under whom Jesus was crucified. Rome noticed Jesus because his followers were spreading in Rome itself.
Keener points to three non-Christian writers:
- Tacitus reports that Jesus was executed under Pilate and describes his movement, which by the fire in Rome in 64 already had thousands of followers in the city, some of whom Nero burned alive.
- Suetonius takes the story back to around the year 49, roughly 19 years after the crucifixion on the usual dating, with debates about Jesus’s followers inside Rome’s Jewish community.
- Josephus discusses Jesus in Antiquities 18.63–64.
These sources have limits, and an honest investigation names them. Tacitus wrote decades after the events, and a skeptic can fairly ask whether he was repeating what Christians in Rome said about their founder. Even so, a Roman historian treating the execution under Pilate as fact, while showing open contempt for the movement, is not what an invented figure would be expected to produce. The Suetonius reference is brief, and neither writer gives a full portrait. What they establish is a movement, a founder and an execution, recorded by outsiders who had no stake in the story.
Josephus is where skeptics push hardest. Keener grants that later Christian scribes altered the passage. He says scholars have largely reconstructed its original form and that an Arabic version of the quotation has confirmed the reconstruction. In the version associated with a Hungarian Jewish professor of early Judaism at Oxford, Josephus describes Jesus as a wise teacher with many followers, known for deeds Josephus calls paradoxa, a Greek word Keener says Josephus also uses for the miracles of Elisha. Jesus then ran into trouble with the Jerusalem elite, who handed him over to Pilate, and he was executed.
That reconstruction is widely accepted but not unanimous. Keener acknowledges that some will answer that the passage was not actually written by Josephus. His reply targets the method behind that dismissal: “the standards that they’re using, you can’t trust anything in ancient literature.” A reader can hold both points at once. The precise wording of Josephus is debated, and rejecting the passage entirely requires a level of suspicion historians do not apply elsewhere.
Keener adds later opponents of the movement, including some rabbis and a pagan critic named Celsus. They called Jesus’s works sorcery, but they did not deny that people experienced them. Critics who wanted the movement to fail had every reason to say there was no such man. Instead, they argued about what kind of man he was.
Doesn’t a Story Passed Along for Decades Turn Into a Game of Telephone?
Many readers first meet the myth through this objection, often in an introductory college course. If a message passes through enough mouths, it gets garbled. Keener accepts the part of the objection that is true: we forget far more than we remember. He would not recall what he ate for lunch last Tuesday. But he says studies of long-term memory show that people tend to remember the major events of their lives even four decades later. He also says a number of memory researchers, including some of the very scholars Bart Ehrman cites, have specifically criticized the telephone analogy.
The analogy fails because of its structure. In the game, one person whispers to the next down a chain of 40 people, and no one can check the original. Jesus taught in public, before groups of people who heard the same words together. As Keener puts it, “that’s one generation that’s not 40 generations.” Shared memory can be checked against other members of the group, which is exactly what a chain of whispers prevents. Keener notes that he once had a decades-old classroom memory independently confirmed by a former classmate at a reunion, the ordinary kind of corroboration groups provide.
Ancient education also prized memory in ways modern readers rarely appreciate. Keener says Josephus reports that most Jewish boys were raised to memorize the Torah. Disciples of any teacher, Greek or Jewish, were expected to pass on that teacher’s words, and for centuries teachers had left publication to their students. So Keener reasons: “If Jesus was a teacher, then he had disciples.” And virtually everyone, he notes, agrees that Jesus was a teacher.
Paul supplies an early witness to how checkable the claims were. Writing to the Corinthians about the risen Jesus, he says:
“After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.” (1 Corinthians 15:6)
Whatever a reader concludes about the resurrection, the verse shows Paul inviting comparison with living witnesses. Keener adds that Paul’s undisputed letters, such as Galatians, show Jesus’s disciples serving as leaders in the early church. These were not strangers piecing together rumors 40 years later.
The texts themselves leave fingerprints. Keener observes that when Luke uses Mark, he often polishes Mark’s Greek for a more educated audience. Even so, many sayings of Jesus still carry Aramaic figures of speech, and some fit the kind of sayings Jewish teachers used in Judea and Galilee rather than the wider Greek-speaking world. Material invented later and farther away would not be expected to carry those marks.
Aren’t the Scholars Who Affirm Jesus Just Biased?
This is the strongest remaining objection. Keener is a Christian, and a skeptic can reasonably ask whether his conclusions follow from his faith. His answer has three parts.
First, the consensus he describes runs from atheist scholars to Christian ones. It covers not only Jesus’s existence but also basic facts: he was Jewish, he was from Nazareth, his contemporaries experienced him as a miracle worker and his disciples believed they saw him alive after his death. Keener stresses that this includes scholars who personally do not believe in miracles or in the resurrection.
Second, he argues that bias runs in more than one direction. “There’s actually pressure within some academic circles to show how much you don’t believe so that you can be respectable,” he says. He once heard a respondent from the Jesus Seminar announce that evangelicals should not even be allowed in the same room with critical scholars, though Keener says most scholars he heard from afterward rejected that approach. His own standard is simple: “let’s look at the evidence and see where it leads.” He says it has led him to change his views more than once, most dramatically from atheism to faith.
Third, he traces where the deeper skepticism came from. In the 1700s, the philosopher David Hume argued against credible eyewitness testimony for miracles. Keener says that premise shaped skeptical study of Jesus for the next two centuries. If miracles cannot happen, then the miracle stories in the Gospels cannot come from eyewitnesses, so the Gospels must be late. That reasoning settles the answer before looking at the evidence.
The mythicist position itself, Keener says, often relies on work from the early 1900s. “It’s been long since refuted, but you know, the books are still in libraries.” Its favorite parallels are figures wrapped in legend from half a millennium or a thousand years earlier. Keener adds that he knows of no ancient novel written about someone within living memory. Jesus was written about within living memory, which puts the Gospels in a different category. The same test explains why the so-called lost gospels carry little historical weight. The earliest of them, the Gospel of Thomas, is usually dated around 140, well outside that window. “They weren’t lost, they were thrown out,” Keener says.
What the Evidence Settles, and What It Leaves Open
The investigation supports a firm conclusion: Jesus of Nazareth was a real Jewish teacher who drew followers, gained a reputation for wonders and was executed under Pontius Pilate. The sources for that conclusion are earlier and more numerous than those for most people of his era, and they include writers with no interest in promoting him.
The investigation does not, on its own, prove everything Christians believe about him. Historians across belief and unbelief can agree that the disciples believed they saw Jesus alive and still disagree about what explains that belief. The Jude 3 Project teaches that Jesus rose bodily from the dead in space and time, but that claim needs its own line of historical argument. This one only clears the ground for it.
The deepest problem with the myth theory is the method it requires. Keener states the consequence plainly: by the methods used to say Jesus didn’t exist, “They may as well say the ancient world didn’t exist.” A test strict enough to erase Jesus also erases Alexander, Socrates and Pilate. Once the method is applied fairly, the open question is no longer whether Jesus lived. It is who he was.
