If that account were accurate, it would settle a great deal. A faith whose central claim was manufactured by a politician in the fourth century would not deserve defending. But the record points the other way. The council was called because a priest in Egypt had begun teaching that the Son of God was a created being. The bishops rejected that teaching in favor of a conviction Christians had been writing down for generations. Constantine shaped the meeting, its politics and its aftermath. But the evidence for its conclusion sits in documents older than his reign.
Testing the claim responsibly means separating it into its parts, because it bundles three different assertions:
- A claim about a text: Did the writings Christians treat as Scripture call Jesus God before 325?
- A claim about a belief: Did Christians hold that conviction before the council met?
- A claim about wording and power: Who chose the council’s vocabulary, and how far did the emperor control the process?
