Maybe not, at least not fully. Sitting in the same pew for years tells you that a person keeps coming. It does not tell you what they have settled about God, Scripture or Jesus. Watson Jones, pastor of Compassion Baptist Church on Chicago’s Southeast Side, says many faithful members carry questions they have never spoken aloud. The reason is rarely a lack of faith. More often, they learned early that church was not the place to ask.
The people beside you have minds, histories and questions that their attendance does not reveal. Recognizing that is where actually knowing them begins.
What Does Showing Up Actually Tell You?
Less than most of us think. Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, puts the problem bluntly. Pastors, she says, can look out at a faithful congregation and “they assume just because people are members that they agree with their statement of faith, or just because they’re faithful, they agree with what you’re preaching.” From the pulpit and from the pew, attendance and agreement feel like one fact. They are two.
People come because the church is close, because they feel they ought to or because the children’s ministry is good. As Fields says, “there’s a lot of reasons why people come to church.” None of those reasons is bad, and none of them tells you what a person believes about the resurrection or the Bible.
She learned this firsthand. When she was first trying to persuade her father to let her start an apologetics ministry at their church, she asked to survey the congregation and told people not to put their names on the forms. What came back surprised her. “It’s amazing what you assume people believe that they don’t believe,” she says.
Notice what made the difference. The survey did not change anyone’s beliefs. It removed the social cost of stating them. Once no one could be identified, people wrote down what they actually thought. The gap had been there all along, out of sight.
Why Would a Faithful Member Keep Quiet?
Jones has a phrase for it. Speaking of his own congregation, which he describes as a little older, he says, “I know some of them are asking these questions, they just are a little more church, so they know not to ask them.”
Being “more church” here means being fluent in the unwritten rules, not being more convinced. A person raised inside church culture knows which questions draw a worried look, and learned that long before they could put it into words. Jones traces it to how many of his members were raised. If they grew up in the South, he says, church was simply what you did. “And mama made you go. So you go and you don’t question God.”
Fields lands in the same place. People are asking these questions, she says, but they do not feel church is a safe place to raise them, because “they don’t feel like they’re supposed to question God.” The silence comes from a belief about faith itself: that asking is a kind of disloyalty.
That belief does not stop the questions; it moves them. Jones notes that his members don’t ask in public, though “in private, some of them really do.” Some have asked him directly, and others have simply told him what they believe, sometimes in ways that caught him off guard. The quiet in the sanctuary and the candor in the pastor’s office come from the same people.
What Kind of Question Is Hardest to Say Out Loud?
The gap is not only between people who believe and people who doubt. It also runs between people who use identical words and mean different things. Jones observes that Black Christians generally hold a high view of Scripture, then qualifies it: “what people mean by that is usually defined differently.” Two members can both call the Bible the Word of God and disagree about what that commits them to. The shared phrase covers the difference instead of revealing it.
His clearest example concerns whether Jesus is the only way to God. Jones says he first heard doubt about this as a youth pastor, and that “sometimes in churches, people don’t ever vocalize it, but it’s definitely there.” He is not describing theologians with a developed position. He means “just regular parishioners” who sincerely tell him they are saved and love Jesus, then add that Jesus is one way to God among others. Jones does not call that full inclusivism, but he thinks it leads in that direction.
Some people arrive at that view through hard history, including the misuse of Scripture to justify white supremacy. Jones dwells on another route. He tells of a man who sat in his office, unsure about the faith, who had met people the church would not count as “one of us,” including Muslims. Jones describes the man as “seeing that they were a little more moral even than us.”
Consider why that kind of doubt stays buried. It does not begin as an argument against a doctrine. It begins as respect for a person. Saying it aloud at church can feel like choosing between two loyalties: to the faith you were taught and to a friend whose decency you have seen up close. Speaking risks sounding unfaithful to one or unkind to the other. So the question sits there, unresolved, while the person holding it keeps singing every word of the hymn. That person is not putting on an act. Their questions have outgrown the answers they were given.
A fair limit belongs here. What Jones describes is pastoral observation drawn from his own conversations, and Fields’s survey covered one congregation. Neither tells us how common these views are across churches. They do tell us that the gap is real and easy to miss.
Aren’t These Mostly Outsiders’ Questions?
It is tempting to think hard questions belong to skeptics outside the building. Jones rejects that picture. On questions of sexuality, he says, “it’s not a question of those people, but they’re in our churches, they’re our children.” Sometimes, he adds, it is even the pastor.
He holds his own convictions on the subject and says so. His concern is method. Churches, he admits, have often “engaged it by ignoring it.” Consider what that teaches the person carrying the question. If the subject never comes up except as a warning, the silence itself becomes the answer, and asking feels like exposing yourself, or your child, to judgment. The question does not leave; it simply goes looking elsewhere. Jones adds that younger believers are less willing to keep it private. “My generation is becoming a little more vocal,” he says.
What Does Scripture Do With a Believer Who Isn’t Sure?
The Bible does not treat honest uncertainty as the end of faith. In Mark 9, a desperate father brings his son to Jesus and cries out:
“Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.” (Mark 9:24)
The passage is narrative, describing one man’s encounter rather than issuing a rule. Still, belief and unbelief appear in the same breath, spoken directly to Jesus, and Jesus does not send the man away.
The short letter that gives the Jude 3 Project its name speaks to this too. Jude urges believers to “earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints” (Jude 1:3). A few verses later, Jude 1:22 reads in the King James Version, “And of some have compassion, making a difference.” Many modern translations render this as a call to show mercy to those who doubt. The wording of verses 22–23 varies among the manuscripts, so it is wise not to build too much on one rendering. Even so, the letter that calls the church to contend for the faith also tells it to deal compassionately with people who are wavering.
Peter tells believers to “be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15). He was writing to suffering Christians about the questions their neighbors would ask, so applying the verse inside the church is an extension, but a reasonable one. A church prepared to give reasons to outsiders should give them to its own members, with the same gentleness. Jones frames his conversations with doubting people that way. He wants them to see that “we’re not just asking you to just believe by faith,” but inviting them to think things through.
Won’t Bringing Doubts Into the Open Shake People Loose?
This is the strongest objection. Inviting people to say what they really think could unsettle members who were doing fine, or give bad ideas a platform they never had.
Jones’s answer is that the questions already exist. The real choice is whether people work through them with others who love them and know Scripture, or alone. He describes what his doctoral training required: not just refuting an opposing view, but learning “to consider the other view, to shape your own view, to sharpen your own view or reconsider your view.”
That sentence is honest in a useful way. Jones does not promise that hearing out a question always confirms what you already believed; reconsidering is on his list. His confidence is that truth can withstand examination.
Not every question carries the same weight, and that matters for how much room a church can make. The Jude 3 Project holds that on the essentials the church speaks with one voice, while on secondary matters faithful Christians have always disagreed without crisis. Whether Jesus is the way to God is an essential, and the Jude 3 Project affirms what Jesus said of himself, that he is “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). So letting a member voice doubt about it does not put the answer up for a vote. It means the answer has to be explained to that person, not just repeated at them.
The objection cuts the other way too. If you should not assume everyone agrees, you also should not assume everyone is secretly doubting. Jones mentions an older deacon who praised his preaching, with real emphasis, because it came from the Word of God. That conviction is genuine. The aim is to stop assuming in either direction.
So What Do You Do With the Person Next to You?
Fields’s advice is simple: “You’ll be shocked to know when you sit with people what they really think.” Notice the setting. It is sitting with someone, not polling the room from a stage. The honest answers Jones describes came in private conversations and in his office. The honest answers Fields received came on unsigned paper. In every case, people spoke once the cost of speaking dropped.
That cost is something you can actually change. A pastor can offer anonymous ways to ask questions, or teach openly on a topic the church has avoided. Anyone can ask a friend from church what they really make of a passage, then listen without correcting them in the first thirty seconds. Often the cost drops fastest when you name your own question first, so the other person is not the only one taking a risk.
The person beside you may believe exactly what you believe, or may have carried a question for twenty years. Watching them sing will not tell you which. The father in Mark brought both his belief and his unbelief to Jesus in one sentence, and he was not turned away. A church can at least make it that safe to talk.
