Usually not. If being “woke” means you now see racial injustice clearly and want your church to answer it from Scripture, that sight belongs inside a congregation. Sho Baraka, the hip-hop artist and communicator, argues that most of these exits are driven by posture rather than buildings. People decide in bitterness, define themselves by what they oppose, and demand change from churches they have barely invested in. Leaving can still be faithful, and Baraka names abuse as a real reason to go. Disagreement alone is not.
That answer needs unpacking, because the people asking this question are often right about a great deal. The question is what they do with being right.
Where Does This Question Come From?
Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, describes a pattern she kept noticing among Black men, especially among Christian thought leaders and artists who no longer attend church regularly. It runs in stages:
- The Black church felt intellectually thin.
- A white evangelical church fed the mind but ignored the issues that mattered to them.
- A multiethnic church took too much effort to be understood in.
- The last stop is no church at all, just favorite scholars streamed on demand.
Baraka says this is largely his own story. He came to faith in college at a church he describes as technically missionary Baptist but charismatic and Pentecostal in practice. He left when he concluded the pastor was not handling Scripture faithfully. He then joined a white church that stimulated him intellectually but, in his telling, lacked emotion and ignored parts of who he was that he believed God cared about. That put him in what he calls a pendulum swing.
Notice whose experience this is. Fields is describing a pattern she has seen in particular circles, not a census of Black Christians. Baraka is describing one path he walked. Neither claims that every Black believer who reads widely on justice ends up alone with headphones.
Is the Black Church Really the Shallow Option?
The first stage of the pendulum rests on an assumption: the Black church is emotional, the white church is intellectual, and a serious thinker eventually has to choose. Baraka thinks that map is historically wrong.
Drawing on his reading of Carter G. Woodson, Baraka argues that Black Christianity has included academic, liturgical, high-church traditions, including Caribbean-influenced congregations and African Anglican and Episcopal churches. In his account, some educated Black clergy struggled to reach uneducated Southern communities in the late 1800s and early 1900s and were then accused of assimilating to white culture. He also says Woodson describes white Southern missionaries who targeted poor Black communities with emotional revivalism. These are Baraka’s historical assertions, offered from his reading. His larger point does not depend on every detail: the emotional and the intellectual have both been present in Black church history, and the stereotype flattens it.
He names figures on both sides of the supposed divide. Some, like Sojourner Truth and Absalom Jones, he places among those who experienced God in a more existential way. Others, like Francis Grimké, he describes as educated, theologically driven Presbyterians. What he values most is finding in Black history “people who’ve had nuance and who’ve been layered,” people who preached justice, spoke to felt needs and held Scripture in high regard at once. His diagnosis of the present is blunt: “we just always work in binaries.”
Fields presses the same point from another direction. There are Black churches, plural, not one Black church. She notes that Jacksonville, where she lives, has more than 2,000 churches, so five television preachers cannot stand in for all of them. Baraka adds that some woke critics outside the faith build their whole case against the Black church on one exploitative televangelist, a move that could be turned just as easily against Black conscious movements by pointing to their worst fundraisers.
So if the church you left was shallow, that may be true of that church. It is not evidence that depth requires leaving the tradition, and it is certainly not evidence that depth requires leaving church altogether.
What Happens When Opposition Becomes Your Identity?
Baraka’s sharpest cultural observation is about what drives the swing. He argues it comes from a need to feel that “we identify ourselves in opposition to what whiteness is.” If the white church says one thing is the heart of God, the reaction is to seek whatever it rejects. The problem is simple: whatever you define yourself against still sets your agenda.
He returns to it near the end of the conversation, half joking about needing a timeout from fighting white supremacy, then turning serious: “if you’re chasing white supremacy all day long, you become defined by that.” He adds, “I’m not defined by my opposition.” A person obsessed with the opposition may believe he is equipping his people, but Baraka argues that “really what you’re doing is you’re trying to build a platform arguing against the oppression.” The test he implies is whether the work brings anything of substance to the community it claims to serve.
Naming racism in a church is a conviction. Choosing every belief and every community by distance from white evangelicalism is a reflex, and a reflex can be steered by the very thing it resists. The Jude 3 Project holds that before any adjective, we are Christian. That order does not erase being Black. It means opposition cannot be the foundation of the self, because Christ already is.
Do You Have to Earn the Right to Ask Your Church to Change?
Here the conversation introduces its most useful word: equity. Fields states it most directly, describing newer believers with fresh theology who want the whole church to shift on their revelation. “You have no equity in the church,” she says. “You’ve not done anything there, but critique.” They skip Bible study, come only on Sunday, and then conclude the leadership is closed to change. Fields keeps the argument honest with a qualification: “Some people have equity and they still won’t listen.” Equity does not guarantee a hearing. It is the condition for being trusted.
Baraka applies the same test to the wider culture, noting that anybody “can throw, you know, bombs from a distance,” and asking “how do you get in the midst of things to create change and build up equity in it.” He turns it on himself. Years ago, while touring constantly, he talked about his commitment to the local church, “but I was never there.” He does not let pastors off either. Many church leaders, he says, are prideful and push back simply because someone else raised an idea. “They’re not CEOs, they’re servants of churches.”
The strongest objection is obvious. Should someone who was wronged have to earn the right to say so? No, and nothing in this argument requires it. Equity, as Fields and Baraka use it, concerns the slow work of changing a congregation’s teaching and priorities. It is not a permission slip for telling the truth about harm, and it does not apply to someone reporting abuse. Confusing those two situations would turn a wise point about influence into a way of silencing people.
Can You Be Right About the Church and Wrong in How You Leave?
Fields puts it in one sentence: “maybe you have a lot of truth, but that truth also has a lot of bitterness attached to it.” Baraka connects that to his study of the civil rights movement. Decisions made in bitterness and anger, he says, mean “you’re prone to make some terrible decisions.” What struck him about nonviolence was that it governed posture as well as action. “The goal is not to exchange power.” The goal is reconciliation.
This is not passivity. The nonviolent movement, as he describes it, created dissonance on purpose and got in people’s space to tell them something was wrong. “I’m creating this tension in order to create reconciliation.” His complaint about much present activism is that it creates guilt and leaves it there. He passes along a line from a pastor friend in Atlanta: “God doesn’t desire cease fires, he desires to make enemies, family.”
That aim has deep roots. Paul writes:
“And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation” (2 Corinthians 5:18).
In context, Paul is describing what God has done in Christ and what his messengers carry as a result. Applying it to racial division in congregations is an application rather than the passage’s first subject, but a fair one, because the people God reconciles to himself are then sent to one another. Reconciliation in Baraka’s sense includes confrontation. What it rules out is confrontation whose only purpose is winning.
How Do You Press a Church That Stays Silent?
Baraka speaks from inside a church that disappointed him. He was an elder when Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown were killed, and his church did not address it directly at first. He said so in elder meetings. His advice is to speak with reasons: “You have to give very theological reasons why God cares about these issues.” A slogan handed to a pastor will not move anyone.
He refuses to frame this as a white problem only. “People think this is just the issue in white churches. No, it’s an issue in black churches too.” He recounts a panel at a church where a Black pastor dismissed reparations with a joke about what Black people would buy, and the congregation laughed along. Then he asks for patience, for a pointed reason: “your transition to understanding justice didn’t come overnight as well.” He calls real change the work of the Holy Spirit and suggests giving leaders sermons and theologians who think differently from them.
That is also why the word woke cannot settle this question. The Jude 3 Project holds that the term has no agreed definition and measures justice instead by God’s character and Scripture, which name both individual sin and systemic, structural sin. Clear sight measured that way belongs in church and can make a case there. Contempt dressed up as clear sight cannot.
When Is Leaving the Faithful Move?
“I don’t think leaving is gonna be the best answer for any situation,” Baraka says, comparing church membership to a marriage, a covenant where people have to learn to work through conflict. He worries that “today what we’ve developed is everything is unhealthy. Everything’s violent.” Mere disagreement gets relabeled as harm.
He does not make staying absolute. Where there is genuine abuse, whether mental or spiritual, he says, “Then I do think then there may be a time for you to leave and exit that church” and find a healthy one. His summary is the line this question turns on: “just because there’s disagreement doesn’t mean you should leave a church.” If you are carrying spiritual abuse, take it to someone you trust outside that leadership.

Scripture draws the line in a useful place:
“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching” (Hebrews 10:25).
The letter addresses believers under pressure, some of whom had stopped gathering altogether. It does not forbid moving from one congregation to another. It warns against abandoning the gathered people of God. A faithful exit from an abusive church leads to another body. An exit to a podcast feed is the drift the passage names.
Why Can’t a Podcast Do the Job?
Baraka admits he has frustrations with his church in Atlanta almost every Sunday. “Do I think about leaving my church a lot? Absolutely.” The trouble is that any alternative is a place where “I’m gonna go somewhere where I’m gonna find new problems.” He traces the restlessness to consumerism, the habit of treating a church like a product to replace, which leaves believers without the practiced capacity for long-suffering and conflict resolution.
Fields offers the most personal evidence. Full of new theology, she once felt she needed to tell her father what to preach. Then life got hard. “I was looking for the mothers in the church to pray for me.” She draws the lesson plainly: “we’re disconnecting ourselves from parts of ourselves that we need because we’re the body.”
That is Paul’s argument:
“And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you” (1 Corinthians 12:21).
Paul wrote to a church fractured by status and spiritual pride. The members who seemed less impressive were not optional. A curated feed lets you choose only the members you admire, which is exactly what Paul says a body cannot do. Fields turns the frustration around: “God has placed you there strategically to add that as a supplement.” What you learned in all that reading may be the very thing your congregation lacks.
Quick Answers
- Can the Jude 3 Project or another ministry replace my church? No. When a young man told Fields he gave his tithe to the Jude 3 Project instead of attending church, she told him to go to church, describing the ministry this way: “we just a supplement to help equip.”
- Does staying mean keeping quiet about injustice? No. Baraka raised his concerns in elder meetings while staying. He describes the goal as tension that leads somewhere, not silence.
- Is changing churches the same as leaving church? No. Hebrews 10:25 warns against abandoning the gathering, not against moving to a healthier congregation when there is real harm.
- Does a bigger platform give me more say in my church? Baraka argues it does not, and says popularity often feeds the ego until a leader stops trusting the people who once served him well.
The deepest problem with leaving for the headphones is what it does to the awakening itself. Sight that can only survive among people who already agree has stopped being sight and become a preference. Baraka and Fields both point toward the harder version: staying close enough to slow, flawed, real people that what you have learned can actually change something, including you.
