Yes. A person can hold the title, hit every number and still be depressed. Achievement does not make the darkness lift, because it was never able to reach it. Maliek Blade, who is completing a doctorate in counseling and oversees a national network of therapists, puts the reason plainly: success can keep you from looking at your pain for a long time, but it cannot heal what sits underneath. Usually it only buys time.
That answer carries some relief inside it. If achievement was never the cure, then still hurting after you arrive says nothing about whether you failed at life. It tells you the effort has been aimed at the wrong problem.
The people who ask this question are often the ones nobody worries about. They reached their goals, earned the money, finished the degrees and built families, and they still describe themselves as just existing. Some are people of faith and some are not. What they share is the puzzle of having won and feeling no better.
Why Depression Hides So Well in Successful People
Most of us carry a picture of what depression looks like: someone who cannot get out of bed, who has stopped returning calls and stopped showing up. That picture is accurate for some people. The trouble is what it does to everyone else. If depression means not functioning, then a person who functions well must be fine.
Blade names this as the camouflage. In his words, “that’s the trick that comes with depression, is the assumption that if someone’s high-functioning, that they couldn’t possibly be sad or depressed.” A person can meet the clinical threshold for a diagnosis and still be charismatic, productive and outgoing. His conclusion is simple: “So let’s not think of it as a personality type, because you never know what’s going on on the inside for that person.”
For high achievers this has a sharp consequence. The traits that make you look healthy (discipline, drive, the ability to perform under pressure) are the same traits that let you keep going while something is wrong. Blade observes that “some of the ways that some people cope with depression is to just try to keep busy or to not focus on it.” For a driven person, busyness looks like excellence. Nobody stages an intervention for the colleague who is always first in the office.
Blade reads the season after the pandemic through this lens. When quarantine stripped away the usual pace, many people lost the activity that had kept certain things out of view, and they were left facing themselves.
Feeling Low Is Not Always the Same as Having Depression
A fair objection comes up here. Isn’t everyone calling a hard season depression now? Plenty of people watch therapist videos and memes and assemble a diagnosis for themselves, the way others look up a cough online and convince themselves it is something serious.
Blade takes the concern seriously. He describes depression as a spectrum. At one end is a low mood: loss of appetite, less interest in things you used to enjoy, tiredness, dread about the workday. At the other end is a person who can no longer function, or who is thinking about ending their life. Many people fall somewhere in between. He insists that “sometimes someone can feel depressed and not have depression,” because a formal diagnosis of major depressive disorder depends on specific clinical criteria.
Sorting this out belongs to a qualified professional. “Following therapists and retweeting therapists or psychologists isn’t the same as going to a therapist or a psychologist,” he says. Online content can help and has reduced stigma, but it is not tailored to you. What someone is dealing with may also be something less familiar than depression that still needs attention, which is why he points people toward a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner for diagnosis.
The distinction exists so you get the right kind of help. Both errors cost something. Calling every bad week a disorder can send you after the wrong remedy. Waving off months of emptiness because you are still productive can keep you from help you need.
If what you are carrying has moved toward thoughts of not wanting to be alive, please do not wait for a perfect diagnosis or the right moment. In the United States, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at any hour. Telling a trusted person today is also a real step.
What Achievement Can Do, and What It Cannot
Many high achievers carry a quiet hope that a family, children, wealth or a bigger position will repair what happened earlier in life. Unprocessed pain does not cooperate. You can outwork it for a while, and then it catches up.
Blade explains why. In his book Whole Brother: Debunking the Myths That Break the Black Family, one of the myths he addresses is that distractions are solutions. He sees the pattern among men especially, though not only men, in hip hop culture and in pastors chasing ministry growth: “The idea is I’m gonna grind or work or succeed my way through this, and the reality is those things don’t heal you, though. They just distract you.”
Then he says the part that answers the question most directly: “it ends up being even more piercing and disappointing when you achieve those things and still have discontentment.” For years the goal carried an unspoken promise that the feeling would go away on arrival. Hope rested on that promise. Reaching the goal and finding the feeling still there takes away the story that kept you going. That is why some people feel worst right after their biggest win.
Blade traces part of this to motives we rarely examine. He describes how a broken relationship with a father can drive what he calls spiteful success, where “there’s an attempt to try to prove value through impact and influence.” Achievement aimed at answering an old wound can never land, because the person it was meant to convince is not the one who needs healing.
His most useful point is that the distractions are often good things: church, Bible study, speaking invitations, sales, travel, kids. But “if we take a good thing and then use it to distract us from doing the personal work we need to do, then that good thing has become a bad thing because of how we used it.” For Christians, ministry activity can be the most respectable hiding place there is. Nobody questions someone for serving too much.
Isn’t Jesus Supposed to Be Enough?
This is the objection many Christian achievers feel most. If I need therapy, am I saying the gospel is insufficient? Blade answers with a comparison that is hard to argue with. He calls for Jesus and therapy, and then says, “I hate that I have to say that because we don’t have to say Jesus and air, or Jesus and water, or Jesus and food.” Nobody thinks eating dinner insults Christ. We assume God provides ordinary means for sustaining life, and Blade argues that for some people therapy belongs on that list.
His theological reasoning is careful. Salvation secures your place in eternity. Yet “salvation doesn’t necessarily remove all those other aspects in terms of our lived experience.” Believers still get sick, still grieve and still carry the effects of what happened to them. Saying so is honesty about the life Christians actually live between conversion and resurrection, and getting help is part of caring for the life God gave you.
Blade does not flatten the spiritual dimension either. He says that “at times some of the issues related to depression are spiritual as well, but not always.” The honest position refuses to treat a medical problem as only spiritual, or a spiritual struggle as only medical, and pursues qualified care and prayerful support together.
Scripture itself declines to pretend faithful people are always fine. In 1 Kings 18–19, Elijah comes off a dramatic public victory at Mount Carmel, then flees, sits down alone in the wilderness, and asks God to take his life:
“It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers” (1 Kings 19:4).
The narrative describes rather than prescribes, so it should not become a formula. What it describes is striking. God does not rebuke him. Elijah sleeps, is given food and told to eat, and later meets God in a quiet way. The story shows that despair right after success is an old human experience, and that the God of Scripture responds to it by tending the body as well as the soul.
The Lie That Says You Have to Carry It Alone
If success does not heal depression, healing needs something else, and Blade’s answer begins with other people. It begins with exposing a lie: “And that is, some would say the lie that depression tells people, is that you have to do it alone.” He has often heard depressed people say they did not want to be a burden.
That fear sounds considerate, but it is actually part of the illness. Pulling away feels like protecting others, yet isolation tends to feed depression. Blade is also realistic about what depression does to a circle of friends. Some people are grateful for friends who let them disappear for a while and welcome them back without explanation. He argues for accountability on both sides: normalizing honest talk about depression so friends understand those dark periods, while not treating harm to relationships as acceptable. The answer to the burden fear is being honest enough that people can actually help.
Paul’s instruction fits here:
“Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2).
The verse assumes believers will have burdens and that others are meant to share them. Being carried is one of the ways the Christian life is supposed to work.
The obstacle is real. People who have been hurt by others often overcorrect and decide to talk to no one, and church spaces can wound. Blade identifies one way they do: a kind of toxic positivity that expects Christians to be cheerful all the time, which makes admitting depression feel less spiritual. A congregation where nobody may say they are struggling teaches its strongest members to keep performing until they break.
What Wholeness Actually Involves
Blade’s practical answer comes in three parts held together, which he loosely calls a trinity of support. Most people, he observes, are missing at least one:
- A mental health professional you see consistently. A therapist offers help fitted to you, plus honest pushback. People surrounded by agreement rarely get challenged, while a therapist can gently show you an area of growth you cannot see.
- Church community. Community supplies the rest of the week, since even a good therapist sees you an hour at a time. Old friends and people outside your field can see parts of you that a single professional never will.
- Self-care practices. Blade’s version is more demanding than it sounds: “So self-care practices include using your no.” Even a great ministry opportunity does not need a yes. He also describes mindfulness, which can be part of Bible reading, as noticing what you are actually thinking and feeling instead of drowning it out with music, phone or television.
His counsel to Christians is direct: “don’t neglect self-care for ministry. God didn’t call you to that.”
He adds one more thing high achievers need to hear: “sometimes we set standards for ourselves that God didn’t actually put on us.” Driven people often turn healing into another performance and aim to become someone with no baggage at all. Blade argues that this perfection will not happen on this side of eternity. The aim is to handle your issues as well as you can, take responsibility for how you affect others, and live among people able to bear with you. Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project and host of its podcast, adds that years of accumulated pain are “not gonna get all processed in eight therapy sessions.” For someone used to fast results, patience is part of the treatment.
A Different Prayer Than the One Success Prays
Fields describes a prayer she began praying after noticing how busy and unfocused she had become: “God, I don’t wanna be distracted. I wanna be whole.” She paired it with asking God to search her heart, which echoes the psalm:
“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:23–24).
That prayer asks to be seen clearly. Achievement offers a hurting person the opposite: a way to stay unseen, even by yourself. Blade turns the achiever’s logic around in one sentence. Ministry and impact matter, “but sometimes the soul that is most important in terms of this season is yours.” For people whose worth has long been measured by output, accepting that is the first piece of work success could never do for them.
Quick Answers
- What is trauma, exactly? Blade defines it as the long-term psychological and emotional effects of a bad event, the way it shows up later in your emotions and behavior, rather than the event itself.
- How do I find a therapist? Blade’s organization, the Whole Brother Mission, connects people with a network of mental health professionals through an intake call. It focuses on Black men but welcomes anyone, and some free and low-cost options exist for those who qualify.
- Will insurance cover therapy? Often it will, though Blade cautions that coverage rarely means free. Call your insurer to learn your co-pay before you start.
- Should I share my therapy journey online? Blade advises against turning a few sessions into content. Give yourself time to process before bringing it to the internet, which he describes as a triggering place.
