You can probably name someone right now: an atheist coworker, a kind uncle who stopped believing years ago, a friend from college who calls herself agnostic but volunteers more than half the church you grew up in. Good people, by any measure you would normally use. So when someone tells you morality requires God, your first honest reaction might be to push back on their behalf.
Here is the direct answer: yes, people can do good without believing in God. Christian apologist Alycia Wood does not dispute that, and neither does the Bible. What she disputes is whether anyone, believer or not, can explain where “good” comes from in the first place without eventually pointing to something outside themselves, something with the authority to actually bind a person to it. Doing good and grounding good are two different questions, and conflating them is where most of these conversations go sideways.
Can Someone Be a Good Person Without Believing in God?
Start where most people start. Plenty of atheists live more consistently moral lives than plenty of churchgoers. They tell the truth, they keep their word, and they sacrifice for people who cannot repay them. Wood’s argument has never been that unbelief produces bad behavior. Her argument is about foundations, not fruit.
Every moral claim, she points out, rests on a source. Not a feeling, but a source: a reason that right is actually right and not just preferred. Right and wrong are not free-floating facts that exist on their own with no explanation. Somebody or something has to ground them.
- For a philosophy, the source might be human flourishing or rational self-interest.
- For a government, the source is law, which can change with the next vote.
- For a Christian, the source is the character of God himself, who is not issuing arbitrary commands but requiring what already fits his own perfectly good nature.
That gives a Christian a fixed place to stand. The command does not change because God’s character does not change.
The atheist has to answer the same question, and that is where things get harder. The difficulty is not that atheists have no answers. It is that their best answers tend to drift.
If Morality Is Just About Reducing Suffering, What Happens When People Disagree About Whose Suffering Counts?
Wood quotes a writer for an atheist alliance who defines the moral act as the one that reduces suffering and increases well-being. On the surface that sounds reasonable. Most people, religious or not, want less suffering and more well-being in the world. The problem shows up the moment you ask a follow-up question: whose suffering, and whose well-being, gets to count?
Wood presses the logic against American slavery, the sharpest test case she can reach for. If your moral calculation weighs only the suffering of enslaved people, the math is clean: abolish it immediately. But the same formula, run with different inputs, could weigh the comfort and economic stability of slaveholders, or an entire town’s prosperity, and arrive at a different answer. A morality built only on weighing outcomes has no built-in safeguard against weighing the wrong outcomes. It can be bent toward whatever the person doing the weighing wants it to justify.
“Atheism doesn’t get me any closer to being for the value of human beings and being anti-slavery.” — Alycia Wood
That is not an accusation that atheists secretly favor slavery. It is a narrower claim: opposing slavery as an actual moral absolute, not just a preference most modern people happen to share, requires something sturdier than a suffering calculation that can be run in either direction depending on who is doing the counting.
Does the Bible’s History With Slavery Disqualify Christianity?
Here is the obvious objection, and Wood does not dodge it. If Christianity grounds morality so well, why did so many Christians defend slavery for centuries? Why does the religion that claims a perfectly good source have such an ugly historical record on exactly this issue?
Wood will not let the church off the hook. The record has to be owned, not explained away. But she draws a line that the broad accusation usually skips past. Slaveholders knew that if enslaved people read the whole Bible, they would read Exodus, the prophets and Galatians, and they would find a message of liberation that undercut the entire system. So a censored version was printed instead. The best-known example, published in London in 1807 for use among enslaved people in the British West Indies, physically removed the liberation passages. The fear itself is the tell. You do not need to cut liberation out of a book that was never about liberation.
The same uncut Bible, the one the censors were afraid of, moved figures like William Wilberforce to spend his life fighting the British slave trade. The text was not the problem. The people misusing the text were.
“The Christians were the issue, not the Christianity.” — Alycia Wood
This is not a tidy answer that erases the wound. It is a distinction worth sitting with: a source that gets twisted by sinful people is a different thing from a source that was rotten to begin with. Christians abused the text. The text itself, read whole, has been a liberating force in Black history for as long as Black Christians have had access to it.
Where Does Human Worth Actually Come From?
The slavery question leads straight into a deeper one. Strip value from a thing and it becomes disposable. Wood’s illustration is a kid jumping on a bed. If he sees no value in the bed, wrecking it costs him nothing. Tell him his little sister is precious to the family and his behavior shifts, sometimes before he even feels the shift emotionally. The value was assigned from outside himself, and it changed how he acted.
Human worth, Wood argues, works the same way. Think about a painting. Its price is not really about the canvas or the pigment. It is tied to the signature in the corner, the name of the artist who made it. Take away the artist and the painting is still the same physical object, but its claim to being priceless evaporates.
“The value of creation is tied up in its creator.” — Alycia Wood
If there is no creator, human worth has to come from somewhere else: usefulness, productivity, social consensus, the law of whichever country you happen to live in. All of those sources can be revoked. A creator-given worth cannot be, because it was never up to the person holding it in the first place.
Why Does Calling Something Evil Require Borrowing From God?
Wood notices something that happens almost every time someone uses a moral atrocity to argue against God. The accusation works only if two things are already true: that human beings have real, fixed worth, and that an actual moral standard, not just a personal preference, was broken. Both claims are easy for a Christian to make. They get much harder to ground if a person is, as Wood puts it, just a product of stardust, an accident of chemistry with no design and no purpose behind it.
She points to a real example. Richard Dawkins once told a woman online that aborting a child diagnosed with Down syndrome and trying again would be the moral choice, calling it immoral to do otherwise. The backlash was sharp, even from people who share his atheism. Wood’s read on it is not that Dawkins was simply being cruel.
“He wasn’t trying to be a jerk. He was being an atheist. A consistent atheist.” — Alycia Wood
If a person’s worth is not anchored in being made in the image of God, then worth becomes whatever society, or a calculation about quality of life, decides to assign. Dawkins was not betraying atheism in that moment. He was following its logic to a place most people, including most atheists, instinctively recoil from. That recoil is itself worth noticing. It suggests most people sense a standard their stated worldview cannot fully account for.
So What Does This Actually Mean for How You Talk to a Friend Who Doesn’t Believe?
It does not mean your atheist friend is secretly immoral. Most are not. The conversation worth having is not “prove you can be a good person,” because Wood concedes that point immediately. The more honest question is, “What is actually holding that goodness up?” Where does the obligation come from? Why is cruelty actually wrong and not just unpopular? Why does a human being who can no longer produce anything still matter?
Those are not gotcha questions. They are the same questions Wood asked herself before she became convinced that grounding morality and human worth in anything less than a Creator leaves the foundation thinner than it looks from the outside. The behavior can be admirable either way. The ground underneath it cannot hold the same weight.
Quick Answers
- Can atheists be moral people? Yes. Wood is clear that people do good without believing in God. Her argument is about grounding, not behavior.
- Where do Christians say right and wrong come from? From the character of God, who commands what fits his own unchanging, good nature, not arbitrary rules he could swap out tomorrow.
- What is the Slave Bible? A censored edition that cut out passages about freedom. Wood points to it as proof that the problem was the Christians doing the censoring, not Christianity itself.
- Why does human worth need God? Wood argues that value comes from the maker, the way a painting’s value is tied to its artist. Without a creator, worth becomes whatever society decides to assign, and what society assigns it can also take away.
