Peter heard the Father’s voice on a mountain, and then told his readers to trust the written prophets as the surer guide. That sequence answers the question. You do not have to choose between a Spirit-filled church and a Bible-and-evidence faith. A church can expect God to move, speak and give gifts while insisting that Scripture has the last word on everything said in his name. The two commitments collide only when a prophetic word, a stirring moment or a promised breakthrough is allowed to outrank the Bible.
Pastor John Daniels is a useful witness because he has lived in both rooms. He grew up in an AME church, came to what he calls his true salvation experience in a charismatic church during college, and then studied at Reformed Theological Seminary. When he planted The Outpouring in East Orlando, he refused to trade one inheritance for the other. “I didn’t want to be void of the spirit, but at the same time, I did wanna uphold the authority of scripture at the same time,” he says. The question is whether Scripture itself supports holding both, and on what terms.
Where Does the Conflict Actually Start?
Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, locates the problem precisely. Charismatic churches are not all alike, she points out. Many believe the gifts of the Spirit still operate today while rarely having anyone prophesy in a service. But in some circles prophecy carries enormous weight, and there, she argues, the spoken word can begin to override the authority of Scripture. She compares it to the dispute that helped spark the Reformation, when tradition was placed on the same level as the Bible.
Daniels draws the same line from a different direction. His Reformed brothers, he notes, would say every faithful preacher is prophetic, because preaching the return of Christ as Savior and Judge announces what God has said will happen. “And so anybody who preaches scripture is preaching a prophetic message,” he says. The trouble begins when “the prophetic goes off the rail of scripture” and drifts into claimed revelations nobody tests. He does not dismiss those claims outright, but he adds, “we have to be careful about it.”
Neither speaker is disputing whether God can speak. Both are asking what has authority when something spoken in God’s name meets the written Word, and the Bible addresses that question directly.
What Does 2 Peter 1 Say About Experience and the Written Word?
Daniels reaches for 2 Peter 1:21 when he argues with people about prophecy, and it repays a close reading:
“For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost” (2 Peter 1:21).
The verse is about where Scripture’s prophecy came from. It did not start with human initiative. The Spirit carried the prophets along.
Read inside its paragraph, the point sharpens. A few lines earlier, Peter recalls standing on the mountain with Jesus and hearing the Father’s voice from heaven (2 Peter 1:16–18). If any apostle could build his authority on a spiritual experience, it was Peter. Yet the next thing he writes is this:
“We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation” (2 Peter 1:19–20).
Interpreters read “more sure” in two main ways. Some take Peter to mean that the prophetic Scriptures are even more certain than what he saw on the mountain. Others, along with several modern translations, take him to mean that the mountaintop experience confirmed the prophetic word and made it more certain. Faithful readers hold both. Neither reading lets the experience replace the written word. On the first, Scripture outranks even an apostle’s vision. On the second, the vision sends readers back to the prophets they already had. Either way, the believer is told to take heed to the written word as a lamp in the dark, which is the logic Daniels and Fields are reaching for.
Does the New Testament Expect Prophecy to Be Tested?
Yes, and it says so in the same breath that it forbids despising prophecy:
“Quench not the Spirit. Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:19–21).
These four short commands belong together. A church that skips the first two has stopped expecting God to speak. A church that skips the last two has stopped asking whether he actually did.
Paul gives the same instruction to a congregation full of gifts: “Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge” (1 Corinthians 14:29). Prophecy in Corinth was spoken, then weighed. John writes in a similar spirit: “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1). Testing is not a cessationist invention bolted onto charismatic worship. It is part of the New Testament’s own description of how gifts operate.
Paul also shows what the test measures: “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed” (Galatians 1:8). If a messenger from heaven cannot overrule the apostolic gospel, a word spoken at an altar call cannot either.
Isn’t It Enough to See Whether a Prophecy Comes True?
Fields describes her own experience honestly. She once received a word she was sure would not happen, and it came to pass about two weeks later. She has also received words that never came true. Her rule of thumb is simple: if it is true, it will come to pass, and if not, it will not. Then she adds the part that carries the weight: “don’t put your hope in what somebody tells you.” Her conclusion is to “keep your hope rooted in the authority of scripture.”
The Old Testament supports her caution and pushes it further. Deuteronomy 18:22 says that when a prophet speaks in the Lord’s name and the thing does not come to pass, the Lord has not spoken it. A failed prediction disqualifies. But Deuteronomy 13:1–3 describes a second case: a prophet whose sign does come to pass, yet who uses it to lead the people after other gods. Israel is told not to listen to that prophet anyway. Fulfillment is a necessary test but not a sufficient one. A word can come true and still be false in what it teaches.
This is where Fields’s sharper statement does its work. If what you think God told you contradicts the Bible, she says, “what’s in his word supersedes what you thought you heard.” She explains why the line has to hold: “you could think you hear a lot of things when you are high on emotion.” Feelings in a powerful service are real, but they do not interpret themselves.
Why Are Hurting People So Vulnerable?
Daniels names the pressure point with unusual clarity. He says “people are more apt to believe something when it’s tied to their socioeconomic status.” Someone who goes home every week to a situation that is not changing is more likely to grab a promise of financial turnaround than to stop and test it, because that promise is the only hope in sight. He has watched people told that if they gave a certain amount, danced a certain way or ran around the sanctuary, their circumstances would change. When nothing changed, some were pushed away from the faith altogether, because they had been told God himself had spoken about them.
Fields adds that many people arrive at church drained by real burdens, including systemic injustice and families under strain, and that church may be the only place they can cry without being asked what is wrong. Someone in that state rarely has the energy to think critically, which is exactly why a quick-fix promise in exchange for a last hundred dollars preys on despair.
Daniels’s answer is not to tell people to feel less. “We have to really study and know the Bible for ourselves so that we don’t fall victim to emotionalism,” he says. If the only Bible a believer knows is the one quoted from the platform, every word spoken there becomes impossible to check. The Bereans are the model Scripture holds up:
“they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so” (Acts 17:11).
Eager reception and daily checking sit in the same sentence.
What Does Scripture Actually Promise About Suffering?
A word that outranks Scripture usually promises something Scripture does not. Fields recalls hearing a gospel singer announce years of unbroken breakthrough, and her response was blunt: “that’s not scripture.” She points to the psalm:
“Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all” (Psalm 34:19).
The psalm deserves a moment of context, because it is easy to hear only the second half. Its heading ties it to David’s flight before Abimelech, a season when the anointed future king was a fugitive feigning madness to stay alive. The psalm is praise sung from inside danger, and it is poetry, not a contract with a date attached. It does promise that the Lord delivers. It also assumes the righteous will have many afflictions first, and it sets no timetable. A preacher who quotes the deliverance and drops the afflictions has changed what the verse says.
Daniels reminds his congregation that most of the disciples did not die peacefully at home. They were martyred. He goes further, arguing that suffering can be the means by which God works grace into his people. “Sometimes suffering is God’s grace,” he says. That is his theological reflection rather than a promise attached to a single verse, and it needs careful handling. It does not mean every hardship is good or that people should stop seeking help. Daniels insists God can and does change situations. What he rejects is making a prophetic word the guarantee of that change.
What About the Objection From the Other Side?
Some Christians will say the safer course is to drop the gifts entirely. If Scripture is the final authority, why open the door to prophecy at all? Faithful Christians genuinely disagree about whether and how the gifts of the Spirit operate today, and serious believers stand on both sides of that question.
The argument here does not depend on settling it. A cessationist and a continuationist can agree that nothing spoken in God’s name today can contradict the written Word. Whatever one concludes about the gifts, the passages above place them under the same authority. Daniels’s own position shows this: “I’m not saying that someone can’t give you a word that is accurate or that can warn you of something that has to come. But what I’m saying is that there has to be balance in what we teach.” Openness to the Spirit and discipline under Scripture are not rival temperaments. They are both commands, sitting side by side in 1 Thessalonians 5.
There is a quieter objection from the charismatic side too: that testing every word will quench the Spirit. Paul’s own words answer it, since the apostle who said “Quench not the Spirit” said “Prove all things” two verses later. He did not think checking a word dishonored the Spirit who gave it.
Where Does Apologetics Fit in a Spirit-Filled Church?
Daniels made apologetics one of the founding pillars of his church, rooted in 1 Peter 3:15:
“But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15).
The verse begins with worship, setting apart the Lord in the heart, and moves directly to reasoned explanation. It does not imagine one kind of Christian who adores and another who argues.
His reason is practical. “We live in a generation who’s not just gonna take the pastor’s word for face value,” he says. “They’re gonna do the own research.” People in his congregation carry their faith into classrooms, workplaces, barbershops and family reunions, and they need more than a moving service. So in most of his sermons he takes up something pressing in the culture and works through it from Scripture.
Here the two halves of the question meet. The habit that protects a believer from a manipulative word, knowing the Bible well enough to test what is said, is the same habit that equips a believer to answer a skeptic. Daniels rejects the idea that this requires a degree: “you don’t have to go to seminary to be able to think critically.” Seminary strengthened his own convictions, but an open Bible is enough to start.
This is why a settled authority makes the gifts safe rather than threatening. If Scripture is the inspired and final standard for faith and practice, every gift can be welcomed and weighed against something that does not move. Without that standard, each new word becomes a rival authority, and the people with the most need and the least energy pay for it.
The Spirit who carried the prophets as they spoke is the same Spirit a church asks to move today. He does not contradict what he has already said.
