If you love Christian hip hop, you have probably wondered whether any of it sticks. A track hits hard, the room lifts, and by Monday life looks the same. So does the movement change anything, or does it mostly make people feel moved for three minutes? D. A. Horton, who spent years inside the movement, gives an honest answer. The music has spread far, and that reach is real. But it has made few deep disciples and left the cities largely as they were. Lasting change, if it comes, will come through ordinary fans who become rooted in Scripture and local churches.
That answer is more hopeful than it first sounds, because it moves the weight of the question off a few hundred performers and onto a much larger crowd. The clearest way to see why is to look at a movement that used hip hop before Christians did.
What the Five Percenters Showed About Music and Influence
The Five Percent Nation, also called the Nation of Gods and Earths, had deep roots in hip hop’s early years. Rakim was its most notable artist. Its teaching told young Black and Latino listeners they were God, affirmed them in their ethnic identity, and came with a structured course of instruction. Horton rejects that teaching. What interests him is how far it traveled. “One thing that hip hop did is it stole a lot of the language and the culture from the 5% nation,” he says.
So music plainly can shape culture, at least at the level of words. Phrases spread through songs and stayed in common use. Anyone who claims rap has no cultural power has to explain that.
The same history carries a warning. Famous artists with some tie to the movement, Horton says, “made it cool to be a five percenter.” Plenty of fans picked up the language for that reason, and committed members had a mocking name for them: Five Pretenders. When hip hop went commercial, “a lot of people fell back from the 5% nation.”
Here is the distinction the whole question turns on. A movement’s music can spread far beyond its committed members, and that spread is fragile. The Five Percenters lasted through the members who had been taught. The fans who borrowed the slang moved on with the market.
Wide but Not Deep
Horton names what he has seen among committed Five Percenters and has not seen at scale in Christian hip hop: “a multitude of disciples who know their faith.” Talk to one of them, he says, and “they know what they’re talking about.” He adds that “they went through this catechesis, they’re disciplined, they will unpack and they will argue.”
Many believers he meets, by contrast, are “lucky just to read a chapter a day to keep the devil away.” His sharpest test is about memory. Fans “can quote their favorite rapper, they can quote John Piper.” Then the question: “But can they quote the Apostle John?” His verdict on the movement is that “it’s grown wide, but not deep.”
Notice what that diagnosis aims at. The songs can be sound and the artists sincere, and the gap still opens, because a listener can absorb a great deal of Christian content secondhand. Someone can recite theology without any habit of reading the text it comes from. When a confident outsider arrives with a well-rehearsed argument, borrowed lines give out fast. The Five Percenters understood this. Their people could argue because they had been drilled.
Scripture sets the bar in the same place. Jesus says, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations” (Matthew 28:19). The next verse spells out the aim:
“Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:20).
Where the KJV reads teach in verse 19, many translations render it make disciples. Either way, the commission is aimed at learners who keep what they were taught. A song can start that process. Finishing it takes teaching.
Music does have a real teaching role, and Paul says so:
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs” (Colossians 3:16).
Singing is one way believers teach each other. In that verse, though, the songs serve something larger: the word dwelling richly in the people who sing. Horton’s complaint fits the verse closely. The songs are doing their part. In too many lives, the word itself is thin.
Does the Reach Count for Anything?
It counts for a lot, and Horton’s hope rests on it. Looking at American revivals, he argues that “one of the major, obviously missing components from every great awakening in American history is ethnic diversity.” He points to the Second Great Awakening, where he says enslaved converts were kept out of the tent and away from the altar their masters used, and to the Jesus movement, which he describes as mostly white. In Christian hip hop, by contrast, he says, “I see people from every nation, tribe and tongue.”
Why would that matter for changing a culture? Because of what outsiders see. Horton imagines people who have written Christianity off as a European faith meeting believers and thinking, in his words, “there’s Christians that look like me that are standing with me to argue down these issues from a biblical perspective, and we’re living in fellowship together.” A diverse audience is the raw material for that kind of witness. The crowd already crosses lines that many congregations still do not.
Raw material, though, is all it is. Horton dates the movement to the mid-1980s, about thirty years before this conversation, and asks what lasting change it has brought to its cities. His answer is blunt: “We ain’t put a dent on our cities.”
Where the Crowd Goes After the Show
Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, raised a fair challenge here. In her experience, many Christian hip hop concerts drew mostly white suburban kids, while Black people she met in the neighborhood often had never heard of the artists. If so, how would the music change anything in the Black community?
Horton answered with a survey from a 2012 Reach Records tour, taken soon after he became executive director of Reach Life. He reports more than 5,000 responses across 28 cities, roughly 51 percent ethnic minority and 49 percent white, and calls the tour something of an anomaly. Then he names what he learned that matters most for this question: the “same integration of the concert was not happening in the churches.” The diverse crowd went home to separate congregations, or to none. That, he says, is the frontier: “to be committed to the local church and to see integration become a reality in our churches.”
That finding is the hinge of his whole case. The concert gathers people. Discipleship happens somewhere else, and too often there is no bridge between the two.
How Much Weight Should His Assessment Carry?
A careful reader should ask this. Horton is an insider judging his own movement. He led an organization tied to its best-known label, and the survey he cites came from that organization’s tour. His judgment that the movement has made no dent in its cities is an assessment from long experience, offered without measurements of crime, schools, church growth or anything else that would show a dent or its absence. He even describes his picture of believers as drawn from his “limited scope” of engagement.
None of that makes him wrong. It means his claims are best held as a seasoned practitioner’s read. His position also cuts in a revealing direction. Someone with a stake in the movement’s reputation would have every reason to talk up its impact. Horton does the reverse, and he directs his criticism at the part he himself helped lead. The claim that holds up best is also the one easiest to test against ordinary experience: many fans know lyrics far better than they know Scripture. Most churchgoers can check that against their own memory.
So Who Is Supposed to Change the Culture?
Horton’s answer starts by redefining the movement. “We gotta see Christian hip hop is not just the rappers that we listen to,” he says. It is “a movement of urbanites that have been redeemed by God that want to advance his glory in our cities.” That shift “takes it from a few hundred rappers to a few tens of thousands of supporters.”
He also removes the usual excuse for waiting. Many believers spend years wondering whether they are called. Horton treats the question as answered: “Every single Christian has the same job description of great commission.” What remains open is where and how, and he frames the prayer simply: “God, I put my yes on the table, Lord, you put my yes on the map.”
His criticism of the movement is that it has “spent the majority of our focus on missional activity only being in arts and entertainment.” The places he would send people are ordinary ones: education reform, mass incarceration, or simply “being school teachers that live unashamed for Jesus Christ.” He lists lawyers, doctors and baristas, and he pictures planting “barbershops in the hood of unashamed barbers who are killing it for the Lord,” excellent at their trade and tied into a local church in their community.
The artists keep a role. “The rappers have a small part to play,” he says, mainly by pointing listeners toward solid pastors and toward writers who take up the issues those listeners face. His conclusion is direct: “my goal is to not see rappers mobilized. It’s to see the supporters of the rappers mobilized.”
What Lasting Change Looks Like
Horton’s picture of success is a congregation. “It’s not just a gospel proclamation that the church has to give, it’s a gospel presence,” he says. He wants churches to show the world “snapshots of heaven”: people of different ethnicities, generations and incomes worshiping together. His prescription is “gospel proclamation, intentional discipleship and more multi-ethnic churches.” The church plant he describes, in South Los Angeles and North Long Beach, is led by Mexican, African American and Samoan pastors, and he wants people there to see believers who still struggle and keep growing in plain view.
That kind of change is slow and rarely shows up online. It also matches Matthew 28, where the goal is people taught to keep what Jesus commanded. A concert can introduce someone to Christ. A church where that person learns the Bible, is known by name and is sent back into a classroom or a barbershop is what turns a three-minute moment into a life.
So can Christian hip hop change the culture? The music can spread a vocabulary, and the Five Percenters show how far that can go. Their story also shows how quickly borrowed language fades when tastes shift. What lasts is people who have been taught. On Horton’s account, the movement’s future depends less on its next big album than on whether the thousands who love it start reading the Apostle John as closely as they listen to their favorite verse.
