The argument usually goes unstated, but it runs like this: science has shown that life arose and diversified through evolution; a Christian believes God created; so a Christian must give up either Genesis or the evidence. A thinking Christian can reject evolution without rejecting science, because the first premise quietly bundles two different claims together. The case of biochemist Fazale Rana shows how. He accepts an old earth and the methods of science, and he disputes whether unguided mechanisms can explain everything in biology.
Testing that answer means asking what Rana’s case establishes, what it only suggests and where it is most vulnerable.
Which “Evolution” Is on the Table?
The word does more than one job. It can mean that populations change over time. It can mean that living things share common ancestors. It can also mean something larger: that natural mechanisms by themselves are sufficient to account for where life came from, why it looks designed and how its history unfolded. People often argue about the first two senses while assuming the third.
Rana is precise about which claim he contests. He describes the reasoning he once found persuasive as an agnostic undergraduate, and that many people still find persuasive: “if evolutionary mechanisms can explain the origin and the design and the history of life, well then why do you need a creator?” His aim, he says, is to offer “a response or a counter narrative to this idea that mechanism alone can explain life and a creator’s not needed.”
His target is the sufficiency claim, which he elsewhere calls “the grand claim, that evolution can explain everything in biology.” No experiment produces the sentence “a creator is not needed.” That sentence is an inference about what a set of mechanisms can do. Disputing it means disputing whether an inference is warranted, which is the kind of argument scientists have with one another all the time.
Rana also accepts a great deal. The earth is old, and life has a long history in which groups of creatures appear, persist and go extinct across geological time. He calls himself an old-earth creationist. His position leaves the rock layers and the dating of the fossil record in place, which removes one hidden premise of the false choice: that taking Genesis seriously means fighting geology.
He reached his view from inside the lab. Rana says he was an agnostic until graduate school, and that it was “my work in biochemistry as a graduate student that convinced me that there had to be a creator.”
What Does the Fossil Argument Actually Show?
Rana’s most developed argument in this conversation has a clear logical shape. It begins with a prediction, compares it with an observation and draws a limited inference.
The prediction comes from Darwin himself. Rana notes that Darwin devoted a chapter of On the Origin of Species to difficulties with his own theory, and he credits Darwin with intellectual honesty for doing so. If evolution happened gradually, the fossil record should show gradual transformations and many transitional forms. Darwin was troubled that it did not. He was also troubled by what is now called the Cambrian explosion, in which complex animals appear in the record without a visible history beneath them. According to Rana, Darwin expected continued collecting to make these problems disappear.
The observation is Rana’s reading of the record today:
The inference is the part readers often miss. Rana stops short of saying this proves design. He says the persistence of Darwin’s own difficulties gives a thinking person reason to be skeptical of the grand claim. His conclusion moves from an observation, that the predicted pattern has not appeared, to a limited judgment, that the case for total explanatory sufficiency has not been made.
He makes a parallel move on the origin of life. Rana describes the Miller-Urey experiment, a staple of biology textbooks, which produced amino acids under conditions meant to mimic the early earth. He argues that planetary scientists later concluded the early atmosphere was mostly nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water, and that this mix produces nothing in that apparatus. He adds that many researchers in the field, including atheists, will say “we have no explanation for the origin of life.” Here too his conclusion concerns a gap in the sufficiency claim.
Are Rana’s Facts Right?
This article cannot settle that, and readers should notice what kind of question it is. Rana’s descriptions of the fossil record, of the early atmosphere and of what origin-of-life researchers concede are factual claims made by one scientist in one interview. Many biologists read the same record differently. They would point to fossils they count as transitional and to proposed explanations for rapid diversification in the Cambrian.
What would decide the matter is specific. For the fossil pattern, the questions are how many well-dated intermediate forms exist between major groups and whether the rocks beneath the Cambrian contain simpler ancestors. For the origin of life, they are what geochemistry shows about the early atmosphere and oceans, and whether any laboratory route produces the building blocks of life under matching conditions. A reader who wants to weigh Rana’s case has to look at that evidence directly. Neither his confidence nor a critic’s is a substitute for it.
Isn’t This Just Arguing From Gaps?
This is the strongest objection. An unexplained thing is not thereby a designed thing, and science has closed gaps before. If design is inferred only where explanation is currently missing, every new discovery shrinks the case.
As Rana states them, his fossil and origin-of-life points support skepticism rather than proof. That is a real difference, though it protects less than it first appears to. Skepticism built on a missing pattern lasts only as long as the pattern stays missing. If researchers find the intermediates or a realistic chemical pathway, that skepticism weakens in direct proportion. Caution and gap reasoning share the same vulnerability.
So the weight of a design argument has to rest on positive evidence: features of living things that point toward a designer on their own terms, whatever the state of current explanations. Rana says his conviction came from exactly that, from what the cell turned out to be, and he contrasts it with Darwin’s picture of the cell as a simple blob of jelly inside an envelope. This conversation names that biochemical evidence without laying it out, so the interview presents the skeptical half of the argument more fully than the half that carries the load. Readers should judge Rana’s position by the positive case and look for it in fuller form.
One consequence follows. Because Rana’s position answers to what the fossils and the cell show, new findings could weaken it. A Christian who holds it on those terms is doing science.
Where Did Theology Enter the Science?
The false choice assumes that one side brings evidence and the other brings faith. Rana’s historical argument complicates that picture.
He argues that biology in the early 1800s was built around design, with living systems understood as a creator’s handiwork, while physics, chemistry, astronomy and geology already worked with mechanistic explanations. On his account, Darwin moved biology into that mechanistic mode, and the result “removes any kind of evidence or signature of design from creation.” Those are Rana’s historical judgments, open to the same scrutiny as any historian’s.
The sharper evidence is a counterexample from Darwin’s own lifetime. Rana describes Asa Gray, a Harvard botanist and one of the first American scientists to embrace Darwin’s theory, as a Presbyterian and a committed Christian. Gray asked Darwin whether God could have used evolution to create. According to Rana, Darwin rejected the idea out of hand, because he could not see how a creator would use such a process in a world that looked so cruel.
Darwin’s reason was a judgment about what a good God would do. Gray’s question shows that accepting evolution did not force atheism even then. Darwin’s answer shows that his conclusion that there was no creator rested partly on theological grounds.
Rana sees the same move today. He says that “the number one response to any kind of design argument would be to try to point out features in nature that look like they are poorly designed,” followed by the objection that a creator would never do that. He calls this a variation of the problem of evil. The premise that a creator would never do that is a claim about God, so whoever holds it is doing theology.
Rana applies the same scrutiny to his own side. He says “many of the arguments that we would make are ultimately philosophical arguments,” and so are many of the objections. His summary is blunt:
“Science just is the veneer. What really is going on at the end of the day are theological and philosophical discussions.” — Fazale Rana
That cuts both ways, because the design argument carries philosophical premises too. Once both sides admit theirs, the contest looks like two interpretations of the evidence, each with commitments that can be examined.
Does Darwin’s Grief Settle Anything?
Rana says Darwin, who trained for the clergy at his father’s urging, gradually lost his faith, and that the death of his ten-year-old daughter was the final trigger. He argues that Darwin’s theory served him as a solution to the problem of evil. These are Rana’s readings of Darwin’s life and motives, and historians would want to weigh them against Darwin’s own writings.
Even if they were granted in full, the theory would still stand. Where an idea came from does not decide whether it is true. A Christian who uses Darwin’s sorrow as a refutation has made a logical mistake, and an unkind one.
Rana uses the history to explain why these conversations so often turn out to be about something deeper than fossils. Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, recalls an undergraduate exchange with a professor that ran on logic and philosophy until it reached its root: why God had allowed the professor’s daughter to be born with Down syndrome. Rana says he sees the pattern on campuses all the time, a deep-seated hurt beneath the scientific objection.
Here the philosophical approach has to respect its limits. Grief over a suffering child is a wound, and naming the theological assumption inside an objection does nothing to heal the person who holds it. Rana concludes that Christians who engage this topic must be equipped philosophically, theologically and biblically, because the question underneath is often why God permits pain. Scripture gives that question room, especially in lament.
What Does Genesis Require Here?
Genesis opens with two foundational claims:
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” (Genesis 1:27)
Read on their own terms, these verses assert that God is the Creator and that humanity bears his image. They give no age for the earth and describe no biological mechanism.
Rana’s reading of human origins rests on the second verse. He views Neanderthals, Homo erectus, Homo habilis and the fossil nicknamed Lucy as real creatures God made, with some intelligence and emotional capacity, that later went extinct. What they lacked, in his view, was “a quality that only human beings have,” the image of God. He supports this by arguing that even within evolutionary thinking, “every one of them are evolutionary side branches and dead ends,” and that “you cannot draw this pathway through the hominin fossil record and show a very clear evolutionary trajectory that leads to the origin of humanity.”
That is a specific interpretation of both the anthropology and the text, and both parts are contested. Christians who take Genesis seriously disagree here. Some read it as describing a young earth. Some, like Asa Gray in Rana’s telling, see evolution as a means God used. Rana holds an old earth with God creating directly. His case matters for this question because it shows a serious option between the two horns of the dilemma, one among several that faithful readers hold.
What Follows
Disputing the claim that unguided mechanisms explain everything is compatible with practicing and respecting science. A Christian can hold that skepticism on the evidence and stay open to evidence against it. Many of the loudest objections to design carry theological premises of their own. Fields draws the practical point for students intimidated by professors and textbooks: believers need to know “we have the ability to challenge what’s written in our scientific textbooks.” Challenging a textbook claim is itself a scientific act.
The limits are just as clear. Rana’s argument leaves Christians free to accept evolution. The gaps he identifies do not by themselves prove a designer, his reading of the record remains disputed, and his account of Darwin’s motives cannot refute Darwin’s theory. Genesis permits his old-earth view alongside others.
What remains open is mostly empirical: whether the patterns Rana describes hold up as evidence grows, and how strong the positive case from biochemistry proves to be. Those questions can be studied. The dilemma the reader started with cannot survive the study, because it treated science and the belief that mechanism is all there is as one thing. Separate them, and the real decision is which premises you hold and whether you let the evidence test them.
