Reading the Bible for Yourself

Acts 17:11 says, "These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so." Look at who gets the praise. Paul is the trained visitor, the one doing the preaching. The verse praises the listeners, people with no title, for checking him against Scripture.

That is how an ordinary believer starts reading the Bible faithfully. Come to it eager. Search it with care. Test what you conclude. Do it often, and do it with other people. The Bereans did all four in a single sentence. Everything below is practice in those four habits, built in order so that each one leans on the one before it.

You will need a Bible with footnotes, two or three translations, a pencil, and a notebook for questions. You can work alone over a month or meet weekly with a few others. The guides along the way are scholars and pastors from Jude 3 Project conversations, and each one shows up at the point where their insight changes what you do next.

Keep studying

This Berean study continues with four full sessions — the Scripture to sit with, the scholars in their own words, and questions to work through together. Members read every study in the library.
